Campgrounds and RV parks near Castine, ME

In Castine, walking tours cover Fort George, the Maine Maritime Academy waterfront, and Dyce Head Light. Kayak launches and small-boat rentals along Penobscot Bay make paddling one of the most common on-water activities, and the bay is a working lobstering area with tour options out of nearby harbors. Day trips are the draw for most RV travelers. Fort Knox State Historic Site and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory sit just across the river near Bucksport, and Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island is roughly an hour and a half away. The Blue Hill Peninsula, Camden Hills State Park, and the fishing villages of Stonington and Deer Isle are all within a reasonable drive for hiking, tidepooling, and coastal scenic loops.

Camping season along the mid-Maine coast typically runs from May through mid-October, with most private campgrounds closed the rest of the year. Peak demand is late June through Labor Day weekend, when oceanfront sites and full-hookup pads at parks like Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort and Searsport Shores Oceanfront Campground book out weeks or months ahead. Early summer brings long days, cool evenings, and frequent morning fog off Penobscot Bay. Blackflies in late spring and mosquitoes in summer are worth planning for, so pack screen rooms and repellent. July and August are warm but rarely hot, and Atlantic breezes keep coastal sites comfortable. Late September and early October are prime shoulder-season windows: foliage peaks across interior Hancock and Waldo counties, crowds thin, and campgrounds still open often drop midweek rates. Freezing nights and closures increase quickly after mid-October, and winter camping is not a mainstream option in the area.

Roads into Castine are paved but narrow in the historic village, and larger motorhomes are better off parking at a nearby campground and driving in with a tow vehicle. Cell service is generally reliable along Route 1 and Route 175, but can be spotty on side roads and at inland campgrounds around Toddy Pond. Coastal campgrounds vary from tightly packed oceanfront resorts to wooded family parks with mixed hookups. Water is often cold even in midsummer, with an August sea surface average around 58 degrees Fahrenheit, and rocky beaches are more common than sand. Fog, sudden showers, and cool nights are typical, so pack layers, rain gear, and sealed food storage. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving invasive pests.
