Camping near Houlton, Maine
Houlton sits at the northern end of Interstate 95 in Aroostook County, right at the U.S.-Canada border. It functions as a practical base for RV travelers heading into northern Maine's forests, lakes, and ATV country, or crossing into New Brunswick on the Trans-Canada Highway. The town is roughly two miles from the Houlton port of entry, making it a common overnight stop for cross-border trips.
Options close to town start with Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey, the closest KOA to the Canadian border, set on a 105-acre parcel with mostly full-hookup pull-thru sites, walking trails, and ponds. Just across the border in New Brunswick, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Woodstock adds a family-focused resort option. In-town, Connell City Park offers a simpler stopover.
Lakefront choices sit within an easy drive. Birch Point Lodge Campground and Cottage Resort is on Pleasant Lake in Island Falls, just off I-95 south of Houlton, and Greenland Cove Campground fronts East Grand Lake in Danforth, a lake shared with Canada.
Things to do around Houlton
The area is built around water, woods, and ATV trails. Fishing runs from spring through fall, with East Grand Lake known for landlocked salmon and lake trout, and the Meduxnekeag River running through Houlton itself. Boating, swimming, and paddling are standard summer activities at the lakeside campgrounds, and Greenland Cove Campground sits directly on the East Grand shoreline.
ATV riders can access the region's connected trail network directly from several campgrounds, including the Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey, which advertises trail access on site. In winter, groomed snowmobile trails extend across Aroostook County and the surrounding towns.
For day trips, Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin sit roughly a two-hour drive southwest, offering hiking that ranges from short pond loops to the strenuous ascent of Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

The camping season in this part of Maine is short. Most private campgrounds around Houlton operate from roughly mid-May through mid-October. Greenland Cove Campground runs a May through early-October season, and the Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey keeps a similar early-May to mid-October window. Outside that stretch, sites and hookups are generally closed and services shut down.
July and August are the busiest months, with warm days, active lakes, and full campgrounds. Reservations for holiday weekends and prime lakefront sites should be made well in advance. June trades slightly cooler weather for fewer crowds, and September brings foliage, cooler nights, and quieter campgrounds.
Baxter State Park follows its own calendar, with most road-accessible campgrounds opening in mid-May and closing in mid-October. Winter is dominated by snow, ice fishing on East Grand and Pleasant lakes, and snowmobiling on the regional trail system.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds around Houlton are booked directly with each operator. The Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey takes reservations online through koa.com or by phone. Birch Point Lodge Campground and Cottage Resort and Greenland Cove Campground take bookings by phone and through their websites, and both fill quickly for July and August lakefront sites.
Baxter State Park uses a separate reservation system at reservation.baxterstatepark.org. Summer camping opens on a rolling four-month basis: a specific date becomes bookable exactly four months ahead, with the online window opening at 6:00 a.m. Eastern. Online bookings now cover an initial night plus up to three consecutive nights at the same roadside site, within park maximums of seven consecutive nights at one site and fourteen nights in the park.
Cross-border travelers heading to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Woodstock will need passports and should book directly with the New Brunswick resort.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural northern Maine. Campgrounds are surrounded by working forest, farmland (Houlton sits in potato country), and lakes, with limited light pollution and long summer daylight. Cell service can be patchy outside town and drops out in parts of Baxter State Park, so downloading maps and confirmations before arrival is worth the effort.
Hookups vary. The Houlton / Canadian Border KOA Journey offers mostly full-hookup pull-thru sites suited to larger rigs, and Greenland Cove Campground reports 50-amp electric, water, and sewer with vehicle lengths up to 60 feet. Baxter State Park is a wilderness park with no RV hookups, gravel roads, outhouses, and no running water at the drive-in campgrounds. Pets are not permitted in Baxter.
Expect black flies and mosquitoes in late spring and early summer, cool nights even in July, and rapid weather changes near Katahdin.
