Camping near Old Town, Maine
Old Town sits on the Penobscot River in central Maine, roughly ten miles north of Bangor and adjacent to Indian Island, the main community of the Penobscot Nation. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, or the North Maine Woods, with Interstate 95 running directly through town.
Camping near Old Town encompasses a range of established campgrounds within a short drive of the Penobscot River and University of Maine area, most situated within 10 to 20 miles of the town center. The area's camping options benefit from proximity to water features, including Pushaw Lake and the Penobscot River, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing.
Pushaw Lake Campground sits on the lake northwest of town, while Cold River Campground and Holden Family Campground lie just across the river from Bangor in Eddington and Holden. Bangor / Holden KOA Holiday and Parks Pond Campground extend the options east along Route 9 toward the coast.
Things to do around Old Town
The Penobscot River is the region's main draw. The Penobscot River Water Trail runs from the East Branch down to Bucksport, with backcountry campsites spaced along the route, letting paddlers travel from upstream reaches to the coast. The Old Town Boat Launch is a common put-in and take-out point above the Milford Dam. Note that many islands in the river are property of the Penobscot Nation, and prior permission is required to land on them.
Pushaw Lake supports swimming, bass fishing, and paddling. Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, east of town, offers quiet hiking and wildlife viewing across bog and forest. Day trips reach Acadia National Park in roughly 90 minutes and Baxter State Park in about the same time.

- summer
June - August
77° / 55°F 80 mmPeak season; waterfront sites book weeks ahead.
- fall

December - February
30° / 16°F 85 mmDeep cold and heavy snow; private campgrounds closed.
Most campgrounds in the Old Town region operate seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, closing during Maine's cold winter months. Cold River Campground runs from May through October, and Parks Pond Campground opens in early to mid-May and closes in mid-October, aligning with the end of leaf season.
Summer is peak season. Warm days, long daylight, and swimmable lakes drive strong demand from late June through Labor Day, and weekend sites at family campgrounds fill well in advance. Black flies and mosquitoes are heaviest from late May into July, so screened enclosures and repellent are worth packing.
Fall brings cool nights, quieter campgrounds, and strong foliage color from late September into mid-October. Winter camping is generally not available at private RV parks in the area; the season is defined by deep snow, subzero cold, and closed water systems.
Booking and reservations
Private campgrounds around Old Town take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and several also list on booking platforms such as Campspot, Hipcamp, and RoverPass. Bangor / Holden KOA Holiday uses the KOA reservation system, where sites added to a shopping cart are not held until fully booked.
Cancellation policies vary by operator. KOA locations typically charge a fee for cancellations made outside a set window and forfeit deposits for last-minute cancellations, with stricter rules on holiday weekends. Cabin and glamping cancellation windows are often longer than RV site windows, so check each park's terms before booking.
For summer weekends and holiday weeks, book waterfront and full-hookup sites well ahead. Shoulder-season weekdays in May, early June, and late September often have same-week availability.
What to expect on the ground
Campgrounds in the Old Town area range from full-hookup RV parks to primitive paddler sites on the river. Cold River Campground provides full hookups, tent sites, and rentals, with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-throughs, and space for rigs up to about 70 feet. Parks Pond Campground offers electric and water sites with a central dump station, 30 and 50 amp service, and a mix of pull-through and back-in spots.
Big rigs are accommodated at several facilities, though some waterfront or wooded sites may have length restrictions or tight access. Interior roads are often gravel.
Cell coverage is generally reliable close to Old Town and Bangor but drops quickly on back roads. Bring bug protection, a leveling kit for uneven sites, and firewood purchased locally, since Maine restricts transport of outside firewood to limit invasive pests.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Old%20Town%2C%20MaineWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Old Town, Maine?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Old Town, Maine. The State of Maine does not require a special license, endorsement, or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any RV available on RVezy, whether it's a campervan, Class C motorhome, or a 35-foot fifth wheel. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) for peace of mind at traffic stops. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection comes with my RVezy booking in Old Town?
Every RV rental in Old Town booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head north toward Baxter State Park or east to Acadia with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the vehicle, and you choose your coverage level during checkout. Coverage tiers offer different levels of financial protection for collisions, towing, and certain interior incidents. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully if you're planning to drive remote stretches of Route 11, where moose encounters and gravel roads can add unexpected wear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Old Town RV rental?
Booking is low risk: RVezy applies a clear, consistent cancellation policy across every listing, including a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After the grace period, refund outcomes depend on how far out your trip is and the timing of your cancellation. Hosts do not set these rules; RVezy manages cancellations uniformly. If your host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, and contact RVezy support promptly if a Maine nor'easter or hurricane remnant disrupts your plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Old Town?
Absolutely, and Maine is one of the most dog-friendly states in the country. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Old Town are listed on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Once you're on the road, your pup can join you on the carriage roads of Acadia National Park, the trails at Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge just minutes from Old Town, and most Maine State Parks (leashed, no longer than four feet). Pushaw Lake Campground and Paul Bunyan Campground in nearby Bangor both welcome dogs. Pro tip: pack a tick comb. Maine ticks are active any time temperatures climb above freezing.
fws.gov/refuge/sunkhaze-meadowsCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Old Town?
Yes, RV delivery in Old Town is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-timer or flying into Bangor International Airport (BGR), only about 15 minutes south. Many RVezy hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campground, a friend's driveway, or a launch point like Pushaw Lake Campground in Orono, then handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough before they leave. Delivery fees usually depend on distance, with most local drop-offs in the Penobscot County area running $50 to $200. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your exact address to get a quick custom quote.
flybangor.com/How far can I drive on an Old Town RV trip?
You can cover a lot of Maine from Old Town, and many RVezy hosts offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages. Popular routes include Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor (about 75 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes east), Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin (about 80 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes north), Moosehead Lake in Greenville (about 95 miles, 2 hours northwest), Camden Hills State Park on the coast (about 75 miles south), and Portland (about 140 miles, 2 hours 30 minutes south). For longer Maine RV road trips from Old Town, ask the host about their daily mileage allowance up front. Pro tip: an RV rental with unlimited mileage is gold if you're chasing both mountains and coast on one loop.
nps.gov/acad/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Old Town, Maine?
You're surrounded by excellent campgrounds for RV camping in Old Town. A few favorites within 30 minutes: Pushaw Lake Campground in Orono, with 118 sites on a 9-mile lake perfect for paddling; Paul Bunyan Campground in Bangor, an easy full-hookup base with a pool; Pumpkin Patch RV Resort in Hermon, with 50-amp pull-throughs that fit big rigs; and Pleasant Hill Campground, also in Hermon, with spacious wooded sites. For an Acadia overnight, Schoodic Woods Campground in the national park is roughly 90 minutes east and bookable on Recreation.gov. Pro tip: reserve Maine State Park sites the moment your dates open, four months out, since they fill within minutes.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725When is the best time of year for an Old Town RV trip?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Maine around Old Town. July and August deliver warm days of 75 to 85 F and lake-perfect evenings around 60 F, while September brings crisp air, fewer bugs, and Maine's legendary fall foliage that peaks in the Penobscot River Valley between late September and mid-October. May and early June are quieter and cheaper, though black flies hit hard in the woods. Winters are cold and snowy (often below 20 F), and many campgrounds close from mid-October through April. Pro tip: book the last week of September for foliage; Bar Harbor and Baxter are stunning, and bug pressure is essentially zero.
weather.gov/car/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, even on your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host walks you through the rig at pickup, covering propane, leveling jacks, water and waste tanks, the generator, and the basics of driving and parking. Old Town is an ideal launch point because the roads out of town (Stillwater Avenue, I-95, Route 2) are wide, well-marked, and rarely jammed compared to Portland or Boston. Hosts stay reachable by phone or message throughout your trip if anything comes up. Pro tip: spend your first night close, maybe at Pushaw Lake Campground 15 minutes away, so you can test systems before driving deeper into Maine's North Woods.
maine.gov/mdot/travel/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every Old Town RV rental on RVezy, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes wrong on Route 1A heading to Bar Harbor or on a back road near Millinocket, call the roadside line, then loop in your host and RVezy support as needed. Cell coverage is solid along I-95 and around Bangor, but it can fade in the North Woods, so download offline maps before you go. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate and license plate at pickup so any service call goes faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Old Town RV rental into Canada or out of Maine?
Crossing state lines for an RV road trip from Old Town is usually no problem, and many hosts allow trips through New Hampshire, Vermont, and beyond. Cross-border travel into Canada (popular routes head to New Brunswick via Houlton, about 2 hours north, or to Quebec) depends on the host and their insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm and arrange paperwork. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: if you head into Canada, carry your passport, the host's written permission, and proof of the RVezy protection plan to smooth your border crossing at Houlton or Calais.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlWhat's fuel like and how should I budget for gas?
Maine gas prices typically sit a bit above the national average, so plan accordingly when you rent an RV in Old Town. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes pull 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs usually run 6 to 10 MPG. A travel trailer behind a half-ton truck lands around 10 to 14 MPG. For a typical week loop covering Acadia, Bar Harbor, and Moosehead Lake (around 500 miles), expect $150 to $400 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up in Bangor or Hermon before heading north, as prices climb noticeably once you pass Millinocket toward Baxter State Park.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Old Town?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. Maine State Parks (including Lily Bay on Moosehead Lake and Lamoine State Park near Acadia) open reservations through ReserveMaine exactly four months in advance, and prime summer weekends sell out within hours. Acadia National Park campgrounds, Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic Woods, are bookable up to six months ahead on Recreation.gov, and July sites disappear by February. Private parks like Pumpkin Patch RV Resort and Pushaw Lake Campground take reservations months out too. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact morning your dates open at 7:00 a.m. ET; sites at Schoodic Woods are gone by 7:05.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/reservations/What are the driving conditions like around Old Town?
Driving an RV around Old Town is refreshingly mellow. Interstate 95 runs right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Routes 2 and 16 toward Acadia are well maintained two-lane highways. The main things to watch: moose (most active at dawn and dusk from May through October, especially north of Lincoln), frost heaves on secondary roads in spring, and the occasional logging truck on Route 11. Bangor's small downtown has a couple of low railroad bridges, so stick to truck routes if your motorhome is over 12 feet tall. Pro tip: avoid driving the Golden Road and other private logging roads near Millinocket in any rented RV; they're rough gravel and often excluded by hosts.
maine.gov/mdot/511/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Old Town?
Campgrounds near Old Town range from full-service resorts to rustic state park loops, so you can match your comfort level. Private parks like Pumpkin Patch RV Resort, Paul Bunyan Campground, and Pleasant Hill Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, dump stations, hot showers, and laundry. Maine State Parks like Lamoine and Lily Bay typically offer water spigots, vault or flush toilets, and a central dump station, but no site hookups. The closest public dump stations to Old Town are at Pushaw Lake Campground and at the Hermon-area RV resorts. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground; potable water is harder to find once you're deep in the North Woods.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/What's actually inside an RV rental in Old Town?
More than you'd think. Most motorhome rentals in Old Town come fully equipped: a queen or bunk-bed sleeping setup for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and seatbelts for everyone on board. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking nights near Baxter State Park. Campervan rentals in Old Town are smaller but cleverly designed for two with a kitchenette and convertible bed. Pro tip: when you message a host, ask if linens, towels, and a starter kit (coffee, dish soap, paper towels) are included; many Maine hosts toss those in free.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are common for Old Town RV rentals?
You'll find lots of flexibility when you rent an RV in Old Town. Popular add-ons include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, outdoor chairs and tables, kayaks or bikes, and propane top-offs. Many hosts also offer pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75) if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Old Town, Orono, or Bangor, with delivery to local campgrounds and Bangor International Airport (BGR) widely available. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances often between 100 and 200 miles, plus generous unlimited options. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bike rack at booking; you'll save versus adding them mid-trip.
flybangor.com/parking-transportation/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure on RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, and the charge typically splits into an initial booking payment and a balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held separately (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup; amounts vary by RV but commonly range from $500 to $1,500. As long as you return the rig clean, on time, and damage-free, the hold is released within a few days. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a short video walkaround at both pickup and drop-off in Old Town to keep your deposit dispute-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Old Town for a winter trip?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Old Town are absolutely possible, and they're a hidden gem for snowmobilers, ice fishers, and folks chasing the northern lights over Aroostook County. Look for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces; many RVezy hosts in central Maine list these specifically. Most winter trips use parks with shore power and heated bathhouses, since campground water lines shut off by November. The Interconnected Trail System (ITS) snowmobile network runs right through the Old Town area, making it a fantastic basecamp. Pro tip: ask your host to deliver and set up the RV at a winter-friendly site like a seasonal park near Millinocket, so you can focus on the fun, not the freeze.
