Camping near Buzzards Bay
Buzzards Bay sits at the western entrance of the Cape Cod Canal in the town of Bourne, Massachusetts, making it a practical launch point for Upper Cape beaches, Plymouth-area history, and the wider South Shore. RV travelers stage here to cross the Bourne or Sagamore bridges onto Cape Cod without the summer traffic penalty of driving deeper into the peninsula each morning.
The closest full-hookup option is Bay View Campground on MacArthur Boulevard in Bourne, a large resort-style park that accommodates tents and recreational vehicles of all sizes, including pop-ups, travel trailers, fifth wheel units and motor coaches. Sandy Pond Campground and Cape Cod Maple Park Campground and RV Park round out the private-park choices within a short drive.
For a public-land alternative, Myles Standish State Forest sprawls across the southern sections of Plymouth and Carver and is the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts. Fearing Pond is one of several pond-side loops inside the forest, offering rustic sites among pitch pine and scrub oak. Together, private parks and the state forest cover the full spectrum from resort amenities to primitive pond camping.
Things to do near Buzzards Bay
The Cape Cod Canal Bikeway runs along both banks of the canal with paved, flat paths suitable for family rides and stroller-friendly walks. Anglers work the canal riprap for striped bass and bluefish, and boat ramps near the canal give trailer access to protected water.
Inside Myles Standish State Forest, visitors find fifteen miles of bicycle trails, 35 miles of equestrian trails and 13 miles of hiking trails plus several kettle ponds open for swimming and paddling. A day-use area at College Pond, open summers only, offers picnicking, swimming, fishing, and canoeing, and interpretive programs such as pond shore walks and cranberry bog explorations run in summer.
Day trips are short: Plymouth Rock and Mayflower II sit about 20 minutes north, Woods Hole ferries to Martha's Vineyard leave from Falmouth to the south, and Upper Cape beaches on Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Bay are within a 15 to 30 minute drive.

The private-park season on the Upper Cape runs roughly May through mid-October. Bay View Campground opens seasonally from May through October 15, matching the typical Cape Cod camping calendar. The camping season at Myles Standish normally runs from mid-April to mid-October, with the most popular times being the summer months, and sites fill quickly for summer weekends.
July and August are peak season. Traffic backs up at the Bourne and Sagamore bridges on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, so RV renters benefit from arriving midweek or early morning. Early August is typically the warmest time of year for sea temperatures in Buzzards Bay, averaging around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the practical window for comfortable swimming.
Shoulder-season trips in late May, June, and September deliver cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Late fall and winter bring most private parks and state forest campgrounds to a close, so off-season RV travelers should confirm operating dates before booking.

Amazing experience! Absolutely no complements, we had a perfect week long vacation! 10/10 recommend!
Odessa G. - Jul 2023
Wow! We rented this camper for our week long vacation and I am so grateful I did! Our family of four embarked on our first camping trip and I was woefully unprepared! But everywhere I was lacking this rental was there to pick up the slack. This super clean camper was perfect for our family of four and was stacked with supplies including sun spray, bug spray, hand soap, clean towels, table cloths, chairs and any cooking supplies you could need. This camper was beautifully set up for our arrival and was completely hassle free. The host was beyond kind, answered all of my questions and was reachable to assist if needed. If I'm in the area again, this will be my go to! Thank you!

How to book a site
Massachusetts state forest sites are booked through the DCR's ReserveAmerica system. Reservations at Myles Standish State Forest can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date, and advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on date of arrival. Reservations are required and no walk-in camping is allowed, so a confirmed reservation is required before pulling in.
Private parks around Bourne use their own booking systems. Bay View Campground opens reservations for the current season by phone after February 15 and online anytime, and the following year's calendar opens on July 15, and popular summer weekends sell out months ahead.
For RV renters, confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and check-in windows at the time of booking.
What to expect on-site
Public and private parks in this area operate very differently. Myles Standish offers close to 400 campsites, equestrian camping, several group campsites that accommodate up to 20 people, and three yurts, with vault or flush toilets, bathhouses with showers, water spigots, and a dump station, but no electric or sewer hookups at sites. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds, and Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood or any wood products into or out of any DCR campground.
Bay View Campground provides full hookups including 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer, a swimming pool, playground, cable TV, internet access, laundry facilities, and a dump station, at the cost of denser site spacing and a large seasonal-camper population. Expect gravel pads and traffic near the Bourne Bridge during peak hours.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Upper Cape and Plymouth.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Buzzards Bay, MA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Buzzards Bay?
Great news: RV rental in Buzzards Bay is one of the most affordable ways to experience Cape Cod. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $300 per night, and campervans fall in between. Booking midweek in June or September can shave 20 to 30 percent off peak July and August pricing. Filter by price range and check for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: pair a cheap RV rental Buzzards Bay listing with a state park campsite at Scusset Beach State Reservation (around $27 per night for MA residents) and you have a full Cape Cod vacation for a fraction of a hotel stay.
mass.gov/locations/scusset-beach-state-reservationWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Buzzards Bay, MA?
Good news: your regular Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Buzzards Bay. Massachusetts does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. To book on RVezy you must be an approved driver (generally 25 or older), and your ID is verified inside the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is, often done in under 10 minutes from your couch.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Buzzards Bay RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cross the Bourne Bridge with real peace of mind on your RV rental in Buzzards Bay. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and each plan offers different deductibles and inclusions to match how you want to travel. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if a small mishap happens on your Cape Cod trip. Pro tip: first-time renters often pick the highest tier for the lowest deductible and the most relaxed trip possible.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if I need to change my Buzzards Bay trip?
You can book your RV rental in Buzzards Bay with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across every listing (it is not host-defined), and a money-back grace period is built into every reservation so you have time to review your plans after booking. If a hurricane, nor'easter, or another disruption affects your Cape Cod trip, RVezy support can help you review your options. Full details, including refund timing, are in the RVezy Help Center so you can read the specifics before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best summer dates near the Cape Cod Canal and get first pick of pet-friendly and delivery-ready RVs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Buzzards Bay?
Yes, dogs are absolutely welcome on the Cape. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental Buzzards Bay has available, then message the host to confirm any cleaning fee or breed notes. Once you arrive, Bourne Scenic Park and Scusset Beach State Reservation both allow leashed dogs at campsites, and the 7-mile paved Cape Cod Canal Bikeway is a dream for morning walks with your pup. Sandy Neck Beach in nearby Barnstable allows leashed dogs in the off-season (mid-September through Memorial Day). Pro tip: pack a towel for sandy paws, that canal breeze means lots of beach time.
nps.gov/caco/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Buzzards Bay?
Yes, and it is honestly the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Buzzards Bay travelers love, meaning they will tow or drive the rig straight to Bourne Scenic Park, Scusset Beach, or even a private driveway, set up the hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter on the search page, then check the host's delivery radius and fee on the listing. This is perfect if it is your first time renting an RV or you would rather not drive a 30-foot motorhome over the Bourne Bridge. Pro tip: book delivery to a canal-side campsite and your vacation begins the moment you arrive.
mass.gov/locations/scusset-beach-state-reservationHow far can I drive on my Buzzards Bay RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of range to explore. Most RVezy hosts in Buzzards Bay include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is the move if you are road-tripping the full Cape. From Buzzards Bay you are roughly 60 miles to Provincetown at the tip of the Cape, 30 miles to Hyannis ferry terminals, 65 miles to Boston, and about 75 miles to Newport, Rhode Island. Each listing shows the included mileage and any per-mile overage fee right on the page. Pro tip: if you are planning a Buzzards Bay RV trip up to P-town and back, filter for unlimited mileage and skip the math entirely.
mass.gov/info-details/visit-cape-cod-and-the-islandsWhere are the best campgrounds near Buzzards Bay for my RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Buzzards Bay sit within 15 minutes of the Cape Cod Canal: Bourne Scenic Park (right on the canal, full hookups, family programs); Scusset Beach State Reservation in Sandwich (98 RV sites, beach access, state-run); Shawme-Crowell State Forest in Sandwich (285 wooded sites, no hookups but huge and quiet); Peters Pond RV Resort in Sandwich (freshwater swimming, full hookups); and Bay View Campground in Bourne (pool, family-friendly, easy canal access). Pro tip: state park sites release on Reserve America months ahead, so for a summer RV camping Buzzards Bay trip, book by February or March.
mass.gov/locations/shawme-crowell-state-forestWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Buzzards Bay?
Late May through mid-October is prime time, but the sweet spot is June and September. Daytime highs average 75 to 82 F in summer and drop to a crisp 60 to 70 F in September, with water temps still swimmable into early fall. July and August bring the warmest beach days (and the biggest crowds plus the highest RV rates). Spring (April to May) is cool and quiet at 50 to 65 F, while winter rentals are rare since most Cape campgrounds close from late October to April. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season campervan rental Buzzards Bay trip in mid-September, you will get warm days, empty beaches, and 20 to 30 percent lower nightly rates.
weather.gov/box/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Buzzards Bay?
You will do great, first time renting an RV is something thousands of Cape visitors do every summer. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, propane, water, the awning, and tank dumping. You can also message the host with questions before booking. Buzzards Bay itself sits at the easy side of the Bourne Bridge, so you can avoid Boston traffic entirely and stay on flat, well-marked routes. If you prefer not to drive at all, choose a delivery listing. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.
mass.gov/info-details/safe-driving-tipsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 6, a dead battery at Scusset Beach, or trouble near the Bourne Bridge is a single phone call away. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, most are local to Buzzards Bay or Bourne and know the nearest service shops. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip if you need backup. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before pickup; the Cape Cod Canal area has solid cell coverage, so help reaches you fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Buzzards Bay RV rental into Rhode Island, New Hampshire, or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is absolutely allowed, and an RV road trip from Buzzards Bay through New England is one of the best ways to use your rental. Popular routes include Newport RI (75 miles), the White Mountains of New Hampshire (180 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine (320 miles), and the Berkshires (160 miles). Travel into Canada may be allowed but requires host approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage, message the host through the listing before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: many hosts happily approve a New England loop if you mention it during the inquiry.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage will I get and how should I budget for gas?
Plan smart and fuel will be one of your smaller costs. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs around 7 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically knock 4 to 6 mpg off normal mileage. Massachusetts gas averages around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon, with stations clustered along Route 6, Route 28, and MacArthur Boulevard in Bourne. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile Cape Cod trip in a Class C, budget about $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off-Cape in Wareham or Plymouth, prices on the Cape itself tend to run 10 to 20 cents higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Buzzards Bay?
Book early and you will sleep easy. Massachusetts state parks like Scusset Beach State Reservation and Shawme-Crowell State Forest open reservations 6 months in advance on ReserveAmerica.com, and prime July and August canal-side sites can sell out within hours of release. Private parks like Bourne Scenic Park and Peters Pond RV Resort open bookings even earlier (often the previous fall) for peak weekends. For shoulder season (May, June, September), you can usually score a site 2 to 6 weeks ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 6-month booking window if you want a waterfront site at Scusset Beach, those are the gems locals know to grab the second they drop.
reserveamerica.com/explore/massachusetts/MAWhat is driving an RV around Buzzards Bay actually like?
It is genuinely manageable, even for first-timers. Buzzards Bay sits at the gateway to Cape Cod, so the main routes (Route 6, Route 28, Route 25, and MacArthur Boulevard) are wide, well-paved, and built for tourist traffic. The Bourne Bridge offers 135 feet of vertical clearance, so no RV has to worry about height. The big things to watch: summer weekend traffic at the bridges (Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are brutal, plan around them), strong crosswinds on both bridges (occasionally closed during nor'easters), and narrow village lanes in Woods Hole and Provincetown. Pro tip: cross the bridges before 11 a.m. on Saturday or after 8 p.m. on Sunday and you will skip 90 percent of the backup.
mass511.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Buzzards Bay?
Most Buzzards Bay area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Private parks like Bourne Scenic Park and Peters Pond RV Resort offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, pools, and on-site stores. State-run options like Scusset Beach offer water and electric hookups but no sewer, with a central dump station included. Shawme-Crowell is no-hookup but has a dump station and potable water fill. You can dump tanks for free at Scusset and Shawme-Crowell, or at the Bourne Transfer Station for a small fee. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving the host's driveway, water spigots at state parks can be a hike from your site.
mass.gov/locations/scusset-beach-state-reservationWhat is inside a typical RV rental in Buzzards Bay?
More than you think. A typical motorhome rental Buzzards Bay host lists comes ready to camp with a real bed (or two), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, dining area, climate control (roof A/C and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Most include a TV, many include Wi-Fi hotspots or smart TVs, and larger Class A and Class C rigs often have onboard generators for boondocking. Campervans are more compact but still include sleeping, a galley kitchen, and often a wet bath. Each listing shows photos and a full amenity list. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps Count to match your family size, perfect for a family RV trip Buzzards Bay weekend on the canal.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make trips easier with thoughtful extras. Common add-ons for an RV rental in Buzzards Bay include linens and bedding packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators ($25 to $50 per day), bikes, beach chairs, propane tanks, and outdoor grills. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Buzzards Bay, Bourne, Wareham, or Sandwich, often a 5 to 20 minute drive from the canal. Drop-off is at the same location unless you arrange one-way travel with the host directly through the listing's messaging tool. Pro tip: bundle the linens, kitchen, and generator add-ons on your first trip, you'll arrive ready to cook lobster rolls and watch the boats from the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway.
nae.usace.army.mil/Missions/Recreation/Cape-Cod-Canal/How does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Buzzards Bay?
Payment is simple and transparent. When you book on RVezy, you pay the full trip total securely through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash to the host. The refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after the trip assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. Your booking total covers the nightly rate, protection plan, service fee, and any add-ons you choose. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup and drop-off; it is the easiest way to avoid any deposit dispute on your Cape Cod trip.
