Campgrounds and RV parks near Forestdale, MA

The Cape Cod Canal Bikeway runs along both banks of the canal and is one of the region's most popular flat, paved rides for families. Hiking and horseback trails wind through the pitch pine and scrub oak forest at Shawme Crowell State Forest, which offers more than 15 miles of roads and trails across over 700 acres, plus a playground and pavilion in Area Two. Sandy Neck Beach, the Sandwich Boardwalk over the salt marsh, and Heritage Museums and Gardens are all within a short drive. Freshwater swimming is available at several kettle ponds, including Peters Pond. The village of Sandwich has restaurants, a grist mill, and small museums, and the Mid-Cape Highway provides fast access east toward Hyannis and the Outer Cape.

Cape Cod camping is strongly seasonal. Most private and state campgrounds operate from spring through mid-fall, and the regular camping season at Shawme Crowell State Forest typically runs from mid-April through mid-October, with limited Thursday to Saturday off-season stays afterward. Peak demand runs from late June through Labor Day, when weekends and holidays fill well in advance. Spring brings cool, damp weather and quieter sites, with ticks becoming more active as temperatures rise. Summer delivers the warmest, driest stretch and the busiest traffic across the Sagamore and Bourne bridges, especially on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Sea breezes moderate afternoon heat, and evenings tend to cool off noticeably. Fall shoulder season, from early September into mid-October, is often the best window for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Late fall and winter see most campgrounds closed, occasional coastal storms, and the possibility of nor'easters bringing wind and heavy rain or snow.

Expect wooded, sandy-soil sites typical of the Upper Cape. Shawme Crowell State Forest is a quiet campground at the beginning of Cape Cod with over 285 campsites among rolling, wooded hills, and more than 15 miles of roads and trails cross over 700 acres of pitch pine and scrub oak. State sites are primitive with no hookups and no dump station on site, though heated bathroom facilities are available and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. A playground and pavilion sit in Area Two. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood or any wood products into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy on site. Cell service can be spotty in the wooded interior. Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups and pond access.
