RV camping near Onset, Massachusetts
Onset is a village on Buzzards Bay in the town of Wareham, positioned at the elbow between the South Shore and the Cape Cod Canal. For RV renters, the location works as a base for both Cape Cod day trips and the historic sites around Plymouth, without sitting in bridge traffic on the Cape side.
Private RV parks cluster on the mainland side of the canal. Cape Cod Maple Park Campground and RV Park sits at 290 Glen Charlie Road in East Wareham with 515 campsites on 600 acres of woodlands, many overlooking swimming and fishing ponds or cranberry bogs, and accepts RVs up to 45 feet. Sandy Pond Campground, Bay View Campground, and Bay View Campgrounds add further private options within a short drive, all oriented toward family camping with hookups.
For public land, Fearing Pond 2 - Myles Standish State Forest lies northeast of Onset in the largest publicly owned recreation area in southeastern Massachusetts, spanning the towns of Plymouth and Carver. Sites there are set among pitch pine and oak with access to kettle ponds for swimming and paddling.
Things to do around Onset
Onset Beach is the anchor attraction, a calm, shallow bay beach that suits families with young kids. The Cape Cod Canal Bikeway runs along both banks of the canal a short drive away, offering flat, paved miles for cyclists of any age and shore fishing access along the way.
Myles Standish State Forest carries the outdoor workload for the area. The forest offers 35 miles of equestrian trails and 13 miles of hiking trails through pine and oak woodlands, and ponds like College Pond allow swimming, picnicking, fishing, and canoeing. In summer, interpretive programs such as pond shore walks and cranberry bog explorations help acquaint visitors with the natural and cultural aspects of the state forest.
Day trips are straightforward: Plymouth for Plimoth Patuxet Museums and the Mayflower II sits about 20 minutes north, and the Bourne and Sagamore bridges put mid- and outer-Cape beaches within reach.

The practical camping window in this area runs from mid-spring through mid-fall. The camping season at Myles Standish normally runs from mid-April to mid-October, with the most popular times being the summer months, and campgrounds may be closed during the off-season. Private parks such as Cape Cod Maple Park Campground and RV Park operate on a similar seasonal schedule, with a small number of year-round options in the region.
Summer, from late June through Labor Day, is peak. Weather is warm and reliably beach-worthy, but weekends fill fast at both state and private campgrounds, and traffic across the Cape Cod bridges backs up on Friday afternoons and Sunday returns. Booking well ahead is essential for July and August.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who want lower demand. May and September deliver mild days, cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations. Atlantic hurricane season peaks in late August and September; storms are infrequent this far north but do occasionally track along the Buzzards Bay coast.

Amazing experience! Absolutely no complements, we had a perfect week long vacation! 10/10 recommend!
Odessa G. - Jul 2023
Wow! We rented this camper for our week long vacation and I am so grateful I did! Our family of four embarked on our first camping trip and I was woefully unprepared! But everywhere I was lacking this rental was there to pick up the slack. This super clean camper was perfect for our family of four and was stacked with supplies including sun spray, bug spray, hand soap, clean towels, table cloths, chairs and any cooking supplies you could need. This camper was beautifully set up for our arrival and was completely hassle free. The host was beyond kind, answered all of my questions and was reachable to assist if needed. If I'm in the area again, this will be my go to! Thank you!

How to book campgrounds near Onset
State forest sites at Myles Standish are booked through the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months prior to the arrival date, walk-in registrations are not permitted, and advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on the date of arrival. Massachusetts residents pay a lower nightly rate than non-residents, and a non-refundable transaction charge applies to each reservation.
Private parks such as Cape Cod Maple Park Campground and RV Park, Sandy Pond Campground, Bay View Campground, and Bay View Campgrounds take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holidays, book two to three months out at minimum.
What to expect on-site
Myles Standish State Forest is rustic. There are no hookup sites; however, a sewage dumping facility, restrooms, and drinking water are provided. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds, and Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood or any wood products into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy on-site.
Private parks in the Wareham area lean toward resort-style camping with full hookups, camp stores, laundry, and organized activities. Cape Cod Maple Park, for example, features 515 campsites on 600 acres, with many sites overlooking swim ponds or cranberry bogs, and accepts RVs up to 45 feet. Expect a heavy share of seasonal campers on summer weekends, which means livelier common areas and busier bathhouses.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Onset, MA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Onset, MA?
RV rental in Onset is more affordable than you might expect for a Cape Cod gateway town. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches range from $250 to $400 per night. Because Onset sits right at the foot of the Bourne Bridge, you can find shoulder-season deals in May, late September, and October when summer crowds thin but the weather stays mild. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and message hosts midweek for the best Cape Cod rates, and bundle delivery to skip towing fees if you're flying into Boston or Providence.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Onset,MassachusettsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Onset, Massachusetts?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Onset. There's no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License required in Massachusetts for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, regardless of size. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before you fly into Boston Logan, then enjoy a stress-free Cape Cod RV trip straight from the Bourne Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Onset covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, every RV rental in Onset on RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can cross the Bourne Bridge with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle while you're on your trip, whether you're parked at Shawme-Crowell State Forest or rolling down Route 6 toward Provincetown. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits you best, from essential to premium coverage. It gives renters meaningful financial protection backed by RVezy. Pro tip: pick a higher tier if it's your first time renting an RV, especially since Cape Cod's narrow village roads take a little getting used to.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Onset RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Onset is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy. Your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and the policy tier shown at checkout, which matters on Cape Cod where the occasional nor'easter or tropical storm can roll through between August and October. You'll see the exact terms during checkout and in your booking confirmation, and RVezy's support team is available if a host cancellation or emergency changes your plans. Pro tip: book early for July and August Cape weekends, then relax knowing you have clear cancellation terms built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Onset?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Onset is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) along for the ride. Onset Beach allows leashed dogs in the off-season (typically after Labor Day through April), and nearby Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth has miles of dog-friendly trails year-round. Bourne Town Beach and the Cape Cod Canal Service Road, a flat 7-mile paved path, are also fantastic with a leashed pup. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee or shedding rules, and pack a towel for sandy paws after beach time.
mass.gov/locations/myles-standish-state-forestCan a host deliver and set up the RV in Onset for me?
Yes, RV delivery in Onset is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers and folks flying into Boston Logan or T.F. Green in Providence. Many local hosts will tow the RV directly to your campground (think Bay View Campground in Bourne or Pinewood Lodge in Plymouth), level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through everything from the propane to the awning. Use the Delivery filter when you search rent an RV in Onset to see hosts offering this service and their per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you want to skip towing across the Bourne or Sagamore Bridge in summer traffic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Onset,MassachusettsHow far can I drive on an Onset RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?

Most listings include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, but plenty of hosts offer unlimited mileage packages too. From Onset, Provincetown is about 65 miles, Newport, Rhode Island is roughly 50 miles, Boston is 60 miles, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 175 miles, and Acadia National Park in Maine is around 320 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a big New England loop, filter for unlimited mileage upfront to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Onset,MassachusettsWhere are the best campgrounds near Onset, MA?
The best campgrounds near Onset put you minutes from the Cape Cod Canal and the beach. Bay View Campground in Bourne is a family favorite with full hookups and a pool, just minutes from Onset. Shawme-Crowell State Forest in Sandwich offers wooded sites and is a short drive over the Sagamore Bridge. Myles Standish State Forest in Plymouth has lakes for swimming and hundreds of sites tucked into pine forest. Scusset Beach State Reservation sits right at the canal's east entrance with oceanfront sites. For Cape proper, Nickerson State Park in Brewster is a favorite. Pro tip: book Massachusetts state park sites on ReserveAmerica up to six months ahead, especially for July and August weekends.
mass.gov/info-details/camping-and-cabin-reservationsWhen is the best time to visit Onset in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Onset, with the sweet spot being June and September. Summer highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit with cool ocean breezes off Buzzards Bay, while nights dip into the 60s, perfect for sleeping with the windows open. July and August are peak season with the warmest water and the popular Onset Blues Festival, but campgrounds book fast. September brings 70-degree days, fewer crowds, and the start of cranberry harvest in surrounding Wareham bogs. Pro tip: shoulder-season RV rental in Massachusetts is noticeably cheaper, and you'll still catch warm beach days well into early October.
weather.gov/box/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Onset?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the dump valves before you ever leave the driveway. Onset is an ideal first-timer launch point because Route 25 and Route 6 are wide, well-marked highways, and the Cape Cod Canal area has plenty of pull-through parking. If city driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers delivery and they'll bring the rig straight to your campsite. Pro tip: do a slow loop around the Bourne Rotary before committing to Cape traffic, and you'll feel confident in minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Onset RV trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy protection plan on your Onset RV rental. One phone call dispatches help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues, whether you're stuck on the Bourne Bridge approach or out near the tip of Provincetown. Your host is also just a message away in the RVezy app and usually knows local mechanics on the South Shore and Cape. RVezy's support team backs you up before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's tire pressure and fluid levels at pickup so you have a baseline if something feels off later in the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Onset, MA?
An RV road trip from Onset puts all of New England within easy reach. The classic Cape Cod loop runs about 130 miles round-trip, hitting Sandwich, Chatham, and Provincetown with stops at Cape Cod National Seashore. Head south for the Rhode Island coast and you'll be in Newport in under an hour, then on to Mystic, Connecticut (about 90 minutes). Northbound, the White Mountains of New Hampshire are a scenic 3-hour drive via Interstate 93, and Acadia National Park in Maine is a doable 6-hour drive. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are reachable via the Steamship Authority ferry from Woods Hole, about 30 minutes south. Pro tip: cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by many hosts, but confirm in the listing first since travel into Mexico is not permitted.
nps.gov/caco/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Most motorhome rentals in Onset get between 8 and 14 miles per gallon, with Class B campervans approaching 18 to 20 mpg and large Class A coaches closer to 7 to 9 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but expect your tow vehicle to drop 25 to 35 percent in mileage when towing. Massachusetts gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, so check current rates before your trip when planning. For a typical 300-mile Cape and Islands loop, plan on a moderate fuel budget. Pro tip: fill up in Wareham or Bourne before heading onto the Cape, since gas stations on the outer Cape can charge a noticeable premium.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Onset?
For peak summer (July and August), book Massachusetts state campgrounds the moment the six-month reservation window opens on ReserveAmerica, which is the official Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation booking platform. Shawme-Crowell, Scusset Beach, Myles Standish, and Nickerson all sell out fast for weekends. Private campgrounds like Bay View in Bourne and Pinewood Lodge in Plymouth often release sites earlier and can be booked directly through their websites. Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and October are much easier, often available a few weeks out. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, search Sunday-through-Thursday nights, which open up across most campgrounds near Onset and are often cheaper per night.
mass.gov/info-details/camping-and-cabin-reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Onset and Cape Cod?
Driving an RV around Onset is genuinely easy outside of summer Saturday traffic at the bridges. Route 25, Route 6, and Route 28 are RV-friendly with wide lanes, and the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges have clearances well over 13 feet, no issue for any rental on RVezy. The main thing to know: Saturday mornings (heading on-Cape) and Sunday afternoons (heading off-Cape) between Memorial Day and Labor Day can mean 1- to 2-hour backups at the bridges. Village roads in places like Woods Hole and Chatham are narrow, so stick to main routes in larger Class A motorhomes. Pro tip: cross the bridges before 9 a.m. on Saturdays or after 7 p.m. and you'll sail right through.
capecodcanal.us/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Onset offer?
Campgrounds near Onset run the full range, so you can match your RV to the site. Private parks like Bay View Campground in Bourne and Pinewood Lodge in Plymouth offer full hookups: water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer at the site, plus Wi-Fi and laundry. Massachusetts state forests like Shawme-Crowell and Myles Standish provide water and electric at many sites with central dump stations, while Scusset Beach offers hookup sites right by the canal. Most campgrounds have potable water fill stations and propane refill on-site or nearby in Buzzards Bay. Pro tip: if you're new to RV camping in Onset, book a full-hookup site for your first night so you can practice connections without rushing.
mass.gov/locations/shawme-crowell-state-forestWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Onset?
Motorhome rental in Onset comes well-equipped for a comfortable Cape getaway. Most rigs sleep 4 to 8 people across queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control via air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many listings include a generator for off-grid power, a television, outdoor awnings, and outside speakers, perfect for beach evenings. Wi-Fi varies, with some hosts including mobile hotspots. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list for must-haves like a backup camera, leveling jacks, and outdoor showers, which make rinsing off after a Buzzards Bay swim incredibly easy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Onset,MassachusettsWhat add-ons can I get with my Onset RV rental, and how does pickup work?
Hosts on RVezy offer practical add-ons that make your Onset RV trip easier: linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and grills, bikes, kayaks, generators, and even pre-stocked propane. Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near Onset, Bourne, Wareham, or Plymouth, and many hosts will deliver to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are set by the host (often 100 to 150 free miles per day with unlimited options available), and you'll see the policy clearly on the listing before booking. Pro tip: ask your host about a bike add-on so you can ride the flat 7-mile Cape Cod Canal Service Road, one of the best free rides in Massachusetts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Onset,MassachusettsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, so there's no cash exchange with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape, with fuel and propane topped off and tanks dumped per the agreement. The protection plan you select handles most accidental damages above the deposit. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at both pickup and drop-off, time-stamped, so you have a clear record. It's the simplest way to keep your full deposit on any RV rental in Massachusetts.
