Campgrounds near Rockport, Massachusetts
Rockport sits at the tip of Cape Ann on Massachusetts's North Shore, roughly an hour north of Boston. RV campgrounds are clustered a short drive west and north of town, since Rockport itself is a compact seaside village without in-town RV parks. Cape Ann Camp Site, family-owned since 1949, is set on 80 acres of mature woodland in Gloucester, overlooks the Annisquam River, sits one mile from Wingaersheek Beach, and is about 8 miles from Rockport.
For beachfront camping, most RV travelers head north across the Merrimack River to Salisbury and Hampton. The Salisbury Beach State Reservation campground offers 484 campsites and one group site with water and 20/30/50 amp electric hookups, plus comfort stations with flush toilets and showers. Just up Route 1A in New Hampshire, Hampton Beach State Park is the only RV park directly on the New Hampshire coast at the mouth of the Hampton River, located south of the main part of Hampton Beach on Route 1A at the Seabrook-Hampton town line, with 28 sites.
Private options round out the mix. Beach Rose RV Park is a small, gated family-owned campground in Salisbury, close to the Atlantic beach, and Rusnik Campground is a wooded park nearby with full and partial hookup sites, a dump station, and pet-friendly policies.
Things to do near Rockport
Rockport's draw is the coast. Bearskin Neck, the working harbor and the red fishing shack known as Motif No. 1 are walkable from most parking areas in town. Good Harbor Beach and Wingaersheek Beach in neighboring Gloucester are the main swimming destinations, and Halibut Point State Park offers cliff walks and tide pools on the north side of Cape Ann.
Families staying north of the Merrimack can combine beach days at Salisbury and Hampton with the arcade strip, mini-golf and boardwalks in both towns. Salisbury Beach has boardwalks providing access to the ocean beach, and two boat ramps on the Merrimack River for swimming, boating and fishing.
Gloucester harbor supports whale-watching trips and charter fishing, and the historic port at Newburyport offers shops and restaurants a short drive from most Salisbury-area campgrounds.

The camping season on Cape Ann and the North Shore is short and beach-driven. Cape Ann Camp Site operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, accommodating RVs up to 45 feet with full hookups and offering tent sites scattered among the trees. Rusnik Campground and Beach Rose RV Park run through the warm months as well, roughly from spring through fall.
State parks follow a similar rhythm. Salisbury Beach's regular camping season runs from spring into mid-October, with a limited off-season stretch on weekends into late November. Hampton Beach State Park is open year round, but the RV campground opens only from early May to the end of October, and its official season for reservations runs from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend.
July and August are peak. Weekends fill months out, especially at oceanfront state park sites. Late spring and September deliver milder crowds and lower demand, though ocean water stays cold until midsummer and coastal fog is common in June.
How to book near Rockport
State-park sites are reserved online. Reservations for Salisbury Beach State Reservation are handled through ReserveAmerica, reservations are required and no walk-in camping is allowed. Same-day reservations can be made up until 2 pm on the date of arrival.
Hampton Beach uses the New Hampshire State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Campers must hook up to all 3 services (water, sewer and electric), and tents and pop-ups are not allowed. Same-day bookings are possible, and bookings may be made up to 11 months in advance.
Private parks (Cape Ann Camp Site, Beach Rose RV Park, Rusnik Campground) are booked directly with the campground by phone or website.
What to expect at Rockport campgrounds
Sites near Rockport skew small and close together. State-park loops at Salisbury are open and beach-adjacent. There is no shade over the sites, and the campground has a relatively open layout between the Atlantic, the Merrimack River and marsh areas. Private parks vary: Cape Ann Camp Site is located near Gloucester and Rockport off Route 128 with access via a narrow road, and the office can help larger RVs navigate, so bigger rigs should call ahead.
Expect strict quiet hours and firewood rules at state parks. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds, and firewood generally must be purchased on-site rather than transported in.
Pet policies differ by park. Pets are generally not allowed in New Hampshire state parks during the peak season, including Hampton Beach State Park, and Salisbury Beach restricts dogs on the beach during the summer season.
