Campgrounds near Sandwich, Massachusetts
Sandwich sits at the western entrance to Cape Cod, just across the Sagamore Bridge from the mainland. The town is a practical base for RV travelers because it puts state park campgrounds, private RV resorts, and Cape Cod Bay beaches within a few minutes of each other, without requiring a drive down the crowded mid-Cape corridor.
Two Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation properties anchor the public options. Area 2 - Shawme Crowell State Forest offers over 285 wooded sites among pitch pine and scrub oak inside Sandwich itself, with a dump station on site but no individual hookups. Scusset Beach State Reservation sits on the north side of the Cape Cod Canal with 98 RV sites that include water and 20/30/50-amp electric service, plus five tent-only sites.
Private options add hookups and resort amenities. Peters Pond RV Resort and Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park both front the spring-fed Peters Pond, and Bay View Campgrounds rounds out the nearby choices for travelers who want full hookups rather than a state-park experience.
Things to do near Sandwich
The Cape Cod Canal is the main draw. A paved service road along the canal doubles as a flat, traffic-free path for biking, walking, and running, and the jetty at Scusset Beach is a well-known saltwater fishing spot. Cargo ship watching from the canal banks is a low-key activity that suits families with young kids.
Inland, Shawme Crowell State Forest has more than 15 miles of roads and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding through pine forest. Peters Pond gives campers at Peters Pond RV Resort and Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park direct access to swimming, kayaking, and fishing on a spring-fed pond.
In town, Heritage Museums and Gardens and the Sandwich Glass Museum are both a short drive from most campgrounds.

The Massachusetts state park camping season runs April through October. Area 2 - Shawme Crowell State Forest operates during that main season and also offers limited off-season camping on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from October through April, with a heated bathroom but no dump station or hookups available in the off season. Scusset Beach State Reservation runs full-service camping through the warm months and offers off-season weekend camping for self-contained units only, since restrooms, water hookups, showers, and the dump station are shut down. Private resorts including Peters Pond RV Resort, Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park, and Bay View Campgrounds generally follow a similar spring-to-fall pattern.
Summer is peak. July and August book out quickly at Sandwich-area campgrounds, and holiday weekends fill first. Families planning school-break trips should reserve well ahead.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV travelers. Late spring and September deliver mild weather, lighter beach crowds, and easier canal-side parking. Fall brings cool nights and quieter trails, with tropical storm risk peaking from mid-August into October.

How to book a campsite near Sandwich
State park sites at Shawme Crowell State Forest and Scusset Beach State Reservation are handled through the Massachusetts DCR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance of the arrival date, and walk-in registrations are not permitted, though same-day advance reservations can be made online until 2 p.m. on the date of arrival. From April 1 through Labor Day Monday, new inventory opens at 8 a.m. Eastern daily; in the off season, inventory opens at 9 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends.
Private resorts book directly. Peters Pond RV Resort, Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park, and Bay View Campgrounds each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and summer weekends should be locked in weeks or months in advance.
Massachusetts prohibits transporting firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy bundles on site.
What to expect
Sandwich-area campgrounds split into two clear styles. State park sites at Area 2 - Shawme Crowell State Forest are wooded and spacious, with a picnic table and fire ring at each site and comfort stations with flush toilets and showers spread through the campground. There are no individual hookups, but a dump station is available. Scusset Beach State Reservation is more open and coastal, with paved RV pads, water and 20/30/50-amp electric hookups, ocean breezes, and direct beach access; campfires there are restricted to the community fire pit and the tent-site fire rings.
Private resorts trade forest for full hookups and family amenities. Peters Pond RV Resort offers pond beaches, a pool, and a camp store, while Dunroamin Cottages and Trailer Park keeps things simpler with pond access.
Quiet hours at the state parks run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., alcohol is prohibited at Massachusetts DCR properties, and generators are not permitted during quiet hours except for medical devices.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sandwich, MA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Sandwich, MA?
RV rental in Sandwich, MA is often more affordable than a Cape Cod hotel stay. Travel trailers typically start around $125 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $200 to $325 per night, and larger Class A coaches can reach $350 or more during peak summer. For a cheap RV rental in Sandwich, target shoulder weeks in May, June, or September when Cape Cod prices ease but weather stays pleasant. Book midweek pickups (Sunday through Thursday) to avoid Friday surge pricing tied to Sagamore Bridge weekend traffic, and filter by Instant Book to lock in your dates quickly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandwich,%20MassachusettsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Sandwich, Massachusetts?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Massachusetts does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly in the platform so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. That's it, you are cleared to cruise over the Sagamore Bridge and start your Cape Cod adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsAm I covered if something happens during my Cape Cod RV trip?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Sandwich comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can relax and enjoy the Cape Cod Canal views. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind (this is protection coverage, not traditional auto insurance). You choose your coverage level at checkout from multiple tiers to match your comfort and budget, the host does not pick it for you. Whether you are cruising Route 6A or parked at Scusset Beach, you are backed up the whole way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy for an RV rental in Sandwich, MA?
Booking your Sandwich RV trip is low-risk thanks to RVezy's built-in cancellation policy, which includes a money-back grace period right after you book. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation terms, so the rules are consistent across every Cape Cod listing and are not shown on individual listing pages. Refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, and additional accommodations may apply in situations like natural disasters, which is reassuring during New England's occasional summer nor'easters or hurricane watches. You will see the exact policy that applies during checkout. Book early to lock in the best rigs for July and August, knowing you have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Sandwich?
Absolutely. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Sandwich, and Cape Cod is one of the most dog-loving regions in the Northeast. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see rigs that welcome your pup, then message the host to confirm any size or breed notes. Once you arrive, walk your dog along the 7-mile Cape Cod Canal Service Road (leashed dogs welcome), wander the Sandwich Boardwalk over the salt marsh, or visit off-season Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable where leashed dogs are allowed outside the summer season. Shawme-Crowell State Forest also welcomes leashed pets at campsites.
mass.gov/locations/shawme-crowell-state-forestCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in Sandwich?
Yes, RV delivery in Sandwich is offered by many RVezy hosts, and it is the easiest way to start your Cape Cod trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. The host drives the rig directly to Shawme-Crowell State Forest, Peters Pond RV Resort, Scusset Beach State Reservation, or even a family member's driveway in Sandwich, then levels it, hooks up utilities, and gives you a full walkthrough. No towing stress, no backing into a site. Use the Delivery filter to find hosts offering this service, and message them with your destination so they can quote the delivery fee upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandwich,%20MassachusettsHow far can I drive on a Sandwich RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of road ahead of you. From Sandwich, popular day trips include Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod (about 55 miles via Route 6), Hyannis (about 15 miles), Plymouth and Plymouth Rock (about 20 miles), Newport, RI (about 75 miles), and Boston (about 60 miles without traffic). Many RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on or built-in perk. Check the mileage policy on each listing, and message the host if you are planning a longer loop up to Acadia or down through coastal Connecticut.
nps.gov/caco/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Sandwich, MA for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Sandwich for RV camping include Shawme-Crowell State Forest (wooded sites on Route 130, dump station available, no in-site hookups), Peters Pond RV Resort in Sandwich (full hookups on a freshwater pond with swimming and kayaking), Scusset Beach State Reservation right on the Cape Cod Canal (great for fishing and beach access), Sun Outdoors Cape Cod in Falmouth, and Boston/Cape Cod KOA Holiday in Middleboro. Shawme-Crowell sits just minutes from historic Sandwich Village, so you can walk to Heritage Museums and Gardens and the Sandwich Boardwalk after setting up camp.
mass.gov/locations/shawme-crowell-state-forestWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Sandwich, Massachusetts?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Sandwich runs from mid-May through mid-October. July and August deliver classic Cape Cod summer with highs typically in the upper 70s to low 80s F and warm ocean swims, though it is the busiest and priciest window. June and September are local favorites with mid-70s temperatures, fewer crowds, and easier campground reservations. October brings fall foliage along Route 6A and crisp 50s to 60s F days perfect for cranberry bog tours. Most Cape Cod campgrounds, including Shawme-Crowell, operate seasonally and typically close by late fall, so plan your motorhome rental in Sandwich accordingly.
weather.gov/box/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Cape Cod?
You are going to do great. A first time renting an RV is more common in Sandwich than you would think, and your host has your back. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery covering how to operate the slide-outs, water systems, generator, propane, and dump valves. Sandwich is one of the easiest Cape towns to start in, with wide roads, gentle terrain, and quick access to Route 6 and the Mid-Cape Highway. Avoid the narrower stretches of Route 6A during peak afternoon beach traffic and you will be set. Ask your host to record a quick phone video of the walkthrough so you can replay it at your campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every campervan rental in Sandwich booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are at Sandy Neck Beach, halfway to Provincetown, or sitting in Sagamore Bridge traffic. Roadside support handles flat tires, battery jumps, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is typically reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about quirky switches or appliances, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. You will never be stranded figuring it out alone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sandwich RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Sandwich are very doable, this is prime New England touring territory. From Sandwich you can easily reach Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine within a day's drive, and many hosts allow cross-border travel into Canada (such as New Brunswick or Quebec) with advance approval. Message the host before booking to confirm and share your route so insurance and protection coverage line up. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular RV road trips from Sandwich include the Maine coast up to Acadia (about 6 hours), the White Mountains in New Hampshire (about 3.5 hours), and the Vermont fall foliage loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cape Cod RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier parts of budgeting for your Sandwich RV trip because Cape Cod distances are short. Massachusetts gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and most motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG while Class B campervans can hit 16 to 20 MPG. For a typical 4-night Cape Cod loop covering 200 to 300 miles, plan on roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C, less for a campervan. Fill up off-Cape in Bourne or Wareham before crossing the Sagamore Bridge since prices on the Cape tend to climb higher in peak summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in Sandwich?
For summer Cape Cod camping, book as early as you can, ideally 3 to 4 months out for July and August weekends. Massachusetts state campgrounds, including Shawme-Crowell State Forest, open reservations through ReserveAmerica and prime weekends can fill within hours of release. Private parks like Peters Pond RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Cape Cod often book even further ahead. If you miss the window, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays, midweek availability opens up dramatically and you will have the Sandwich Boardwalk and Cape Cod Canal trails nearly to yourself.
mass.gov/how-to/reserve-a-campsite-yurt-or-cabinWhat's it like driving an RV around Sandwich and Cape Cod?
Easier than most visitors expect. Sandwich sits right at the gateway to Cape Cod, just over the Sagamore Bridge, and the main roads (Route 6, Route 3, and Route 130) are wide, well-marked, and RV-friendly. The Sagamore Bridge clearance accommodates standard RVs, but Friday-afternoon and Sunday-evening bridge traffic in summer can stretch 30 to 60 minutes, so travel midday or early morning. Route 6A through historic villages is scenic but narrow in spots, take it slow. Watch for sudden coastal fog near the canal and seasonal beach traffic on Route 28. Otherwise it is smooth, flat, and stress-free driving.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Sandwich?
Cape Cod campgrounds run the full range. State parks like Shawme-Crowell State Forest offer wooded sites with comfort stations (flush toilets and hot showers), potable water spigots, a centralized dump station, and a playground, but no in-site hookups, so you will boondock using your RV's freshwater tank, batteries, and propane. Private parks like Peters Pond RV Resort and Sun Outdoors Cape Cod offer full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, pools, camp stores, and laundry. For dump stations and fresh water fills mid-trip, Shawme-Crowell and most Sandwich-area private parks offer public dump access for a fee. Always confirm hookup needs with your host before booking.
mass.gov/locations/shawme-crowell-state-forestWhat's inside a typical Sandwich RV rental?
You are getting a home on wheels. A typical RV rental in Sandwich, MA includes sleeping for 4 to 8 people (a mix of queen beds, bunks, and convertible dinettes), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and sink, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelts for everyone riding while driving. Most listings include a TV, and many offer onboard generators, solar setups, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi hotspots, useful since cell service is patchy in parts of Cape Cod, including stretches of Shawme-Crowell State Forest. Check each listing's amenities tab and message the host with any must-have questions before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandwich,%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Sandwich RV rentals?
Hosts in Sandwich offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linens and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bikes (perfect for the Cape Cod Canal Service Road), kayaks and paddleboards, outdoor grills, generators, and pre-filled propane tanks. Delivery and setup to local campgrounds like Shawme-Crowell or Peters Pond is the most popular add-on, freeing you from towing entirely. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 150 miles and per-mile fees beyond that, though some listings include unlimited mileage. Pickup logistics are coordinated directly with your host in the RVezy app, including time windows and the walkthrough.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sandwich,%20MassachusettsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, no cash and no awkward exchanges with the host. You pay your trip total securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is placed on your card a few days before pickup as a separate authorization from your booking payment. Deposits typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and the hold is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, generally within a few days. To avoid issues, take photos of the RV (inside and out) at pickup and dropoff, follow the mileage and generator-hour policies, and return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels noted in your trip agreement.
