Camping near Scituate, Massachusetts
Scituate sits on Massachusetts's South Shore, roughly 35 minutes from downtown Boston and within easy reach of several established campgrounds. The closest option for RV travelers is Wompatuck State Park in nearby Hingham, a large public campground managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Farther south, private options such as Pinewood Lodge Campgrounds in Plymouth offer full-hookup sites in a pine-forest setting on a freshwater lake.
The region also includes an unusual set of tent-only options in the Boston Harbor Islands, accessible only by ferry or private boat. Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island, and Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island are part of the state and national park system that spans dozens of islands in the greater harbor, though overnight camping is currently offered only on Peddocks.
Most RV renters base themselves at Wompatuck or Pinewood Lodge and use Scituate itself for day trips to beaches, the harbor, and lighthouse walks.
Things to do around Scituate
Wompatuck State Park is the main outdoor hub near Scituate. The park offers 12 miles of paved bicycle trails, many miles of wooded bridle paths and hiking trails, and is also a geocaching park with up to 30 caches inside its boundaries. Mt. Blue Spring is a well-known source of fresh drinking water inside the park, and visitors can fill containers for free. Aaron River Reservoir supports fishing and non-motorized boating, and Nantasket Beach in Hull is a short drive for ocean swimming.
On the water, the Boston Harbor Islands offer hiking, tidepooling, historic forts, and lighthouse views, with ferry-accessible day trips to Spectacle and Georges islands.
Closer to Scituate itself, families can walk Scituate Harbor, visit Scituate Lighthouse, and hike the trails at nearby World's End reservation.

The camping season on the South Shore is short and clearly defined. Wompatuck State Park operates from early May through mid-October, and Pinewood Lodge Campgrounds runs from May 1 through Columbus Day on a similar window. Outside those dates, most public and private campgrounds in the area are closed.
The Boston Harbor Islands camping season is even tighter. Camping is available only on Peddocks Island, Wednesday through Sunday, from mid-June through mid-October, and is not offered on Bumpkin, Grape, or Lovells. Peddocks operates Wednesday through Saturday nights through Labor Day, then Thursday through Saturday nights into October.
July and August are peak season, with warm ocean breezes and the highest demand for waterfront and electric sites. Late spring and September bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations. Winter is off-season across the region: campgrounds are shuttered, ferries do not run to the harbor islands, and coastal storms are common.

How to book a campsite near Scituate
Public campgrounds in the area use the Massachusetts DCR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Walk-in registrations are not permitted; advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on the date of arrival.

What to expect on the ground
Wompatuck is a forested public campground with a mix of wooded, private sites and more open loops. It has about 260 sites, roughly half with electricity, and offers electric hookups, no water hookups, and a dump station on site. Larger RVs should confirm site length before booking.
Pinewood Lodge Campgrounds is a private RV-oriented park. It sits on 200 acres of white pine forest with about 300 shaded sites, ranging from secluded tent areas to full-hookup sites for large rigs, alongside a 50-acre lake with over 3,000 feet of frontage.
The Boston Harbor Islands are rustic and not suitable for RVs. On the islands there are composting toilets only, no showers, no supplies, and fresh water is only available on Peddocks Island. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground.
