Camping near Baraga, Michigan
Baraga sits on the west shore of Keweenaw Bay in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The village functions as a practical basecamp for RV travelers heading into Copper Country, with US-41 running through town and connecting north toward Houghton and south toward Marquette.
Campgrounds cluster tightly around the bay. Baraga State Park sits along the Keweenaw Bay shoreline, offering modern sites with electric hookups managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Ojibwa Casino RV Park and Sand Point - Ojibwa Recreation Area are both operated by the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and provide lakeside RV camping close to the casino, marina, and Sand Point Lighthouse.
For RVers willing to drive farther, Twin Lakes State Park lies northwest in Copper Country on Lake Roland, and Van Riper State Park sits east along Lake Michigamme near Champion. Both extend the trip radius into ORV trail networks, sandy swim beaches, and interior lakes that stay warmer than Lake Superior.
Things to do around Baraga
Water access defines most trips. Keweenaw Bay supports fishing, kayaking, and boating, with public launches near the state park and the Ojibwa marina. The Sand Point Lighthouse and the adjacent archaeological site sit close to the Ojibwa campgrounds and are easy walking-distance stops.
ORV riders have unusual latitude here. Baraga State Park is one of the few Michigan state parks that permits ORV operation between the campground and connecting trails, with designated motorized routes linking to Twin Lakes State Park, Bewabic State Park, and Bond Falls Scenic Site.
Inland, Van Riper State Park offers a sandy swim beach on Lake Michigamme, playground equipment, and paved bike paths. Anglers target bass, pike, and walleye on the interior lakes, while area trails draw hikers in summer and snowmobilers once snow arrives.

The camping season is short and weather-driven. Modern state park campgrounds in the area typically operate from mid-spring through mid-fall, with peak demand running from late June through mid-August when Lake Superior warms enough for swimming and daylight stretches past 10 p.m. Van Riper's modern loop closes for the winter, though rustic options in the region operate on a shorter footprint.
Late August through early October brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood fall color across the Keweenaw. First frost typically arrives around early October, and overnight lows drop quickly after that. This shoulder window is often the best value for RV travelers who want quiet sites and active trails.
Winters are long, snowy, and severe, with Baraga averaging well over 160 inches of snow. Modern campgrounds close, but snowmobile and cross-country ski trails open across the region. Spring melt and blackfly season in late May can make early June camping a mixed bag.
How to book a site
Michigan state park campgrounds, including Baraga, Twin Lakes, and Van Riper, are reserved through MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window, and lakeside sites at all three parks tend to fill weeks ahead for summer weekends. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to every Michigan state park and state forest campground.
Ojibwa Casino RV Park and Sand Point - Ojibwa Recreation Area are booked directly through the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community rather than the state system. State forest campgrounds in the surrounding area operate first-come, first-served, which can work as a backup when modern parks sell out.
State park cancellations trigger fees that scale by how close arrival is, and no-shows lose two nights plus the reservation fee, so update arrival dates in advance if plans shift.
What to expect on the ground
Cell coverage is uneven once past Baraga village, and interior campgrounds like Van Riper have variable signal by carrier. Download maps before leaving town. US-41 is the main artery, and while Baraga State Park sits right on the highway, road noise reaches many of its campsites.
Baraga State Park offers modern sites with electric hookups but no full hookups on site. Van Riper's modern loop has 147 electric sites in a mix of 30- and 50-amp service, with a two-lane dump station and drinking water available. Ojibwa Casino RV Park provides paved full-hookup sites, the closest thing to a full-service park in the immediate area.
Blackflies and mosquitoes peak from late May into July. Black bears are present across the Upper Peninsula, so store food in the RV and use provided fire rings only.
