Campgrounds near Boyd, Wisconsin
Boyd sits in Chippewa County in west-central Wisconsin, roughly midway between Eau Claire and the Chippewa River corridor. The area gives RV renters access to two Wisconsin state parks, a Chippewa County lake park, and several private campgrounds within a short drive, most of them oriented around fishing, paddling, and the Old Abe and Ice Age trail systems.
Otter Lake Park Campground sits on the north end of Otter Lake in Chippewa County, about 7.5 miles north of Stanley, on a 602-acre lake that reaches depths of 43 feet. Farther north near Cornell, Brunet Island State Park has two family campgrounds; the South Campground offers 24 electric sites in a hardwood and pine forest available for tent and RV camping, with 19 back-in and 5 pull-through sites.
To the west near Chippewa Falls, Lake Wissota State Park has 116 wooded family campsites, 58 with electricity, plus showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station. Pine Harbor Campsite and Uncle Saltys Golf and Camp round out the private options for renters who prefer full hookups or on-site activities.
Things to do near Boyd
Water shapes most trips in this part of Wisconsin. Otter Lake is a 602-acre reservoir with a maximum depth of 43 feet and is known for panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye, and campers can fish from the shoreline or by boat using the on-site launch, with beach access for swimming and paddling. Lake Wissota itself is a roughly 6,148-acre flowage at the confluence of the Yellow and Chippewa Rivers and supports boating, kayaking, and walleye fishing.
On land, the Old Abe State Trail is a paved rail-trail that runs through woodlands and along the Chippewa River, with its north trailhead at Brunet Island State Park. Brunet Island also features roughly eight miles of hiking trails through hardwood forests and open fields, including nearly two miles of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
Day trips into Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire add breweries, restaurants, and shopping within about a 45-minute drive.

The camping season in west-central Wisconsin is short but active. Otter Lake Park Campground typically operates from early May through late October. At Brunet Island State Park, the South Campground is generally open from mid-April through early November, and the North Campground runs a slightly shorter season. Lake Wissota State Park is open year-round for day use, with the family campground open from spring through late fall.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book heavily, especially electric sites, and holiday weeks tend to fill months in advance. Late spring brings black flies and mosquitoes near the rivers, while fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color through late September and early October.
Winter closes most campgrounds and drops overnight lows well below freezing. RV renters visiting between December and March should plan for snow-covered roads, limited services, and cold-weather freshwater and holding-tank management.
How to book near Boyd
Wisconsin state park sites use a single statewide reservation system. Camping reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, and campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site; reservations can be placed online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A Wisconsin State Park and Forest vehicle admission sticker is also required, either daily or annual.
Otter Lake Park Campground is run by Chippewa County and books through the county parks reservation portal directly. Pine Harbor Campsite and Uncle Saltys Golf and Camp are private operators; contact them directly or reserve through their own websites, particularly for full-hookup or pull-through sites that suit larger rentals.
For peak-summer weekends, book state park electric sites the day the 11-month window opens.
What to expect
Sites in this area are generally wooded and shaded. Lake Wissota's family campground lies in a pine and hardwood forest and every campsite offers at least partial shade, with 116 sites of which 58 have electric hookup. Most sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to about 45 feet in length, which suits many Class A or fifth-wheel rentals.
Otter Lake's 22 wooded campsites each have 20-30-50 amp electrical hookups, plus a swimming beach, picnic area, and boat launch; the campground has a fill station but no on-site sanitary dump, and campers can use the dump station at Chapman Park in Stanley. Cell reception is very limited at Otter Lake, and an emergency phone is available near the entrance for 911 calls.
Expect vault or flush toilets depending on loop, potable water spigots, and firewood available on site or nearby.

Winter and shoulder-season RV trips around Boyd can be magical with the right prep. Lake Wissota State Park stays open year-round for ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing on 8 miles of groomed trails. Look for RVezy listings marked with furnace, heated holding tanks, and shore-power-ready features, then filter by hosts comfortable with cold-weather rentals. Plan to use the campground's electric hookups (58 sites at Lake Wissota), pack RV antifreeze for the waste system if temps drop below 20°F, and bring extra propane. Boyd winters can hit lows of -10°F in January, so dress in layers and check 511wi.gov for road conditions. The frozen Chippewa River sunsets alone are worth the trip.
