Campgrounds and RV parks near Sandstone, MN

The Kettle River drives most of the recreation. In spring, canoeists and kayakers shoot the turbulent rapids at Blueberry Slide, Mother's Delight, Dragon's Tooth, and Hell's Gate, while summer hikers follow the river past dramatic sandstone rock formations, Wolf Creek Falls, the Log Creek Arches, and Robinson's Ice Cave, along with the historic ruins of the Banning Sandstone Quarry. Banning State Park has 17 miles of hiking trails, river fishing and boat access, 6 miles of snowmobile trail, and 19 kilometers of mostly beginner ski trails through forest and along the Kettle River rapids. Rock climbers scale cliffs above the river, and the paved Willard Munger State Trail connects to the area for cycling. For rainy days, Grand Casino Hinckley provides gaming and dining, and Hinckley's Fire Museum documents the 1894 fire that shaped the region.

The camping season centers on late spring through fall. Banning State Park's campground is open April 1 through November 21. Snowmelt swells the Kettle River in April and May, making that window the prime stretch for whitewater paddlers and spectators, though nights remain cold and some facilities are not yet running at full capacity. Summer brings the highest demand. The park stays busy on weekends, making advance reservations essential, and demand peaks from Twin Cities paddlers and climbers on summer and fall weekends. July and August deliver reliable warmth for swimming and hiking, along with the region's heaviest thunderstorm activity. Fall is a strong shoulder season. Cooler temperatures thin the crowds midweek, and hardwood color along the river typically peaks from late September into early October. Flush toilets and showers are available at the campground in season only, so late-season RVers should plan for vault toilets and self-contained water. Winter access is limited to day use, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

Sites vary widely between rustic state park loops and full-hookup private parks. Banning State Park Campground offers rustic camping with wooded, roomy sites that provide a sense of privacy thanks to good vegetation between sites, and each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Cellular coverage can be spotty inside the park. Full-hookup travelers gravitate to the private parks nearby, where paved or hard-surface pads, 20/30/50-amp service, and dump stations are the norm. Site layout tends to be the most consistent point of friction in reviews, as many resort sites are back-in and approach angles can be tight for larger rigs. Black bears, deer, and ticks are present in the woods around Sandstone, so store food securely and check for ticks after hikes.
