RV camping near Berkley, Michigan
Berkley sits in Oakland County just north of Detroit, and most RV-friendly camping is a short drive northwest into the chain of state recreation areas managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area includes the headwaters of the Clinton, Huron and Shiawassee rivers, and the 3,745-acre park supports year-round recreational opportunities within its scenic interior. Its modern loops are typically the closest developed campground option for the city.
Further west, Proud Lake Recreation Area sits on the Huron River in Oakland County, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites and an extensive trail system. Highland Recreation Area adds another large tract of hilly Oakland County terrain with rustic and equestrian camping options nearby.
Private options fill in the gaps. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley offers full-hookup RV sites and resort-style amenities on the west side of the metro, while Windsor Campground Inc provides a more traditional private-park experience. Together, these give travelers a range of choices within about an hour of Berkley.
Things to do around Berkley
Water recreation drives most trips. Pontiac Lake features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, a model airplane flying field, a modern and rustic equestrian campground, an expansive picnic area, and an off-leash, fenced area for dogs. At Proud Lake, water enthusiasts can kayak, canoe or swim in the lake and Huron River, with an on-site boat launch and canoe and kayak livery available.
Trail networks are extensive. The natural, 11-mile, single-track mountain bike trail at Pontiac Lake has been ranked as one of the Top 100 Trails in the United States and is considered one of the most technical trails in southeast Michigan due to its rocky, hilly terrain and sharp turns. Highland Recreation Area is known for challenging singletrack as well, plus hiking, horseback and cross-country skiing routes.
Berkley itself offers walkable dining along Twelve Mile Road, and downtown Detroit museums, the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, and Belle Isle are all short drives from any of the campgrounds.

The prime RV window runs from late April through mid-October. Summer weekends at the Michigan DNR campgrounds fill quickly, and Pontiac Lake in particular is a well-known Oakland County favorite that books up early. Weekday stays and shoulder-season trips in May, September and early October are far easier to secure.
Spring brings the wettest weather and cool overnight temperatures, but trails green up and the Huron River runs high for paddling. Fall delivers reliable color through October and cooler nights well suited to campfires. Winter camping is possible at some year-round parks, but expect snow, limited services and closed loops.
One important planning note: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area's modern campground, including the A-frame, has been closed to allow for planned updates to the sanitation station. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open; however, the sanitation station is not available to campers. Confirm current status directly with the Michigan DNR before booking a stay tied to this campground.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near Berkley
State-park sites use one central system. Reservations can be made at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance. Popular loops at Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake and Highland fill fast for summer holiday weekends, so being ready when the window opens matters.
Anyone driving into a state park or forest will need to get a Recreation Passport. These can be obtained either when one registers their car with the state or at the entrance of any state park.
Private parks, including Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and Windsor Campground Inc, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book private full-hookup sites early for summer, especially if a specific length or pull-through is needed.
What to expect on site
State recreation-area campgrounds in this region are modern by Michigan DNR standards. Sites are typically back-in with grass or paved pads and include 30- or 50-amp electrical service, fire rings and picnic tables, with modern bathhouses providing flush toilets and hot showers, plus a shared sanitation station with potable water for RV campers. Water and sewer hookups at the site itself are uncommon; plan to fill and dump at the shared station.
Check-in for camping arrivals is typically in the afternoon and checkout is around midday. Two vehicles are generally allowed per campsite, and day visitors must sign in at the campground office and leave by quiet hours.
Do not haul firewood in from home. Invasive insects and diseases have destroyed millions of trees in Michigan, often after hitching a ride on firewood, so purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold in state parks, local stores and roadside stands.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Berkley,%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Berkley, Michigan?
Good news: a regular Michigan driver's license, or any valid US or Canadian license, is all you need to rent an RV in Berkley. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement for any motorhome or trailer commonly listed on RVezy. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before you fly in, typically for under $25. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform, so there is no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is.

Pro tip: review the protection options before you confirm so you know exactly what is included for your Michigan RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Berkley RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to your trip. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit. If something unexpected comes up, RVezy support is available to walk you through your options. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later to lock in the best Berkley-area RVs before they are claimed, then review the cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly where you stand.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Berkley is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see plenty of motorhomes and trailers where your dog is welcome. Berkley itself is famously dog-friendly, and you are a short drive from off-leash areas at Stony Creek Metropark and Kensington Metropark. Most Michigan state parks, including Proud Lake and Holly Recreation Area, allow leashed pets at campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a portable mat so muddy paws stay outside the RV after lakeside adventures.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regulationsCan the RV be delivered to me in Berkley?
Yes, RV delivery in Berkley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome through Woodward Avenue traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at your campsite, whether that is Addison Oaks County Park, Algonac State Park, or a family driveway in Royal Oak. They will level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so picking a campground within an hour of Berkley keeps costs friendly.
oakgov.com/community/oakland-county-parks/parks-trails/addison-oaksHow far can I travel on a Berkley RV trip?

Each host sets their own daily mileage allowance, listed clearly on the listing page. Pro tip: if you are planning a big loop around Lake Michigan, message the host and ask about a flat-rate mileage upgrade, which usually beats paying per-mile overage.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhere are the best campgrounds near Berkley, MI?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Berkley's surrounding region. Top picks include Addison Oaks County Park in Leonard (about 30 minutes north, with full hookups and a lake), Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (great for paddling), Holly Recreation Area (wooded sites about 45 minutes away), Algonac State Park on the St. Clair River, and Camp Dearborn for family-friendly fun. For something more remote, Port Crescent State Park up in the Thumb is a hidden gem. Pro tip: Michigan State Parks book up to six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, so secure your site before locking in your RV.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Berkley?
Late May through early October is prime time for a Berkley RV trip, with summer highs typically in the 75 to 85 degree range and warm evenings perfect for campfires. June offers green forests and fewer bugs than peak July, while September and early October deliver Michigan fall color across the Irish Hills and Upper Peninsula with crisp 50 to 70 degree days. Winters in southeast Michigan are cold, often dropping below 20 degrees, so most rentals run April through November. Pro tip: aim for late September for a fall foliage trip up toward Tahquamenon Falls, one of the most beautiful weeks on the Michigan calendar.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be in great shape, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions. For Berkley renters nervous about driving a big rig through metro Detroit, start with a smaller Class B campervan or a travel trailer, or pick a host who offers delivery directly to your campground. Pro tip: do a short practice drive in a quiet area on a Sunday morning before heading out on the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002193053-For-rentersWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never stranded on an RVezy trip. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering services like flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, towing, and fuel delivery anywhere in Michigan or across the country. If something mechanical pops up, you call one number and help is dispatched. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need to coordinate with your host. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Berkley, so it is a one-tap call if you are somewhere with patchy signal near the Mackinac Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Berkley RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel from Berkley to Ontario is one of the great perks of renting here, since the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge are just 20 minutes south. Many hosts allow Canada travel as long as you let them know in advance and the protection plan supports it, so message the host directly before booking to confirm. You will need a valid passport for everyone in the RV. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: popular Canadian RV road trip routes from Berkley include Niagara Falls (about 4 hours), Point Pelee National Park (about 90 minutes), and Algonquin Provincial Park (about 8 hours) for serious wilderness.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Michigan RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables on any RV trip, but it is easy to plan for. Class B campervans average about 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A rigs run about 6 to 10 mpg. Michigan gas prices typically track close to the national average, with stations along I-75 and I-696 near Berkley being competitive. For a 500-mile round trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes in a Class C, budget roughly $180 to $250 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: use a fuel-finder app to scout stations with diesel or oversized lanes before you leave Berkley, since not every corner station can accommodate a 30-foot motorhome.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Berkley RV trip?
For Michigan state parks, book as early as possible, the Michigan DNR reservation system opens sites six months in advance and popular spots like Ludington, Tawas Point, and Wilderness State Park sell out within minutes for summer weekends. Oakland County Parks like Addison Oaks open about a year ahead. For private campgrounds within an hour of Berkley, three to four months out is usually plenty, except over Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Pro tip: lock in your campsite first, then book your RV on RVezy, because flexible RV dates are easier to find than that perfect lakefront site at Holly Recreation Area.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Berkley, MI?
Driving an RV around Berkley is very manageable once you know the lay of the land. Berkley sits just off Woodward Avenue and I-696, with easy access to I-75 north toward cottage country. Watch for low railroad bridges on Coolidge Highway and avoid the narrow side streets of downtown Royal Oak and Ferndale during rush hour. Winter brings snow north of M-59, so most renters stick to April through November. Michigan's famous potholes are real, so take it slow on secondary roads in early spring. Pro tip: if you are nervous about city driving, choose a host offering RV delivery in Berkley straight to your campground and skip the urban driving entirely.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Berkley?
Campgrounds near Berkley range from full-service to rustic, and most renters get exactly what they need. Michigan State Parks like Proud Lake and Holly offer modern sites with 30 or 50 amp electric, potable water fill stations, and dump stations included with your nightly fee. Addison Oaks County Park has full hookups, hot showers, and a sandy beach. Private parks like Camp Dearborn add laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Berkley, then you can comfortably boondock a night or two on the way north if a campsite falls through.
midnrreservations.com/What's inside the RVs available for rent in Berkley?
Today's RVs feel more like cozy cabins than camping gear. A typical motorhome rental in Berkley sleeps 4 to 8 with a real queen bed, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette, and climate control. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators for off-grid power. Campervan rental in Berkley is more compact, perfect for couples wanting to chase Lake Michigan sunsets. Seatbelts match the sleeping capacity for safe family travel. Pro tip: read the listing's amenity checklist carefully, especially for must-haves like an outdoor shower for sandy feet after a day at Port Crescent State Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Berkley,%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get with my Berkley RV rental?
Hosts in Berkley offer a strong lineup of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bikes, kayaks, generators, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer convenience add-ons like pre-stocked propane, pre-filled fresh water, or a dump-and-return service so you do not have to handle waste tanks yourself. Pickup and drop-off are flexible: meet at the host's location in metro Detroit, or pay for RV delivery to your campground. Pro tip: bundling add-ons with the same host is usually cheaper than sourcing gear separately, and it means everything is waiting in the RV when you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Berkley,%20MichiganHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Berkley, MI, RVezy charges your card for the trip total right through the platform, with no cash or side payments to the host. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy, separate from the booking payment, and released back to your card after a smooth return, typically within a few business days. The deposit amount is shown clearly on every listing before you book. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at both pickup and drop-off, time-stamped on your phone, so the return is fast and your deposit comes back without a hitch.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I find a cheap RV rental in Berkley for a family trip?
Yes, a cheap RV rental in Berkley is very doable, especially for a family RV trip. Travel trailers are usually the budget-friendly choice, often $90 to $130 per night, and many sleep 6 to 8 comfortably for a Great Lakes adventure. Pair a trailer with a host who delivers (no need to own a tow vehicle) and you have an affordable getaway to places like Bay City State Park or Port Crescent State Park. Booking Sunday through Thursday and avoiding holiday weekends reduces pricing further. Pro tip: message a few hosts about weekly discounts, many offer 10 to 20 percent off for stays of five nights or more, making a week of RV camping in Berkley one of the best-value family vacations in Michigan.
