RV camping near Bingham Farms

Bingham Farms sits in southern Oakland County, roughly 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit and within a 45-minute drive of a cluster of Michigan state recreation areas that anchor most RV trips in the region. The closest options run west and northwest along the I-696 and M-5 corridors, putting the village within easy reach of Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake, and Highland state recreation areas, plus private resorts in Milford and New Hudson. The area is managed by two overlapping systems. Michigan Department of Natural Resources parks (Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, Proud Lake Recreation Area, Highland Recreation Area) offer modern and rustic state park sites with electric hookups, while private parks such as Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and the City of Dearborn-owned Camp Dearborn add full-hookup and resort-style stays. Terrain here is glacial: kettle lakes, rolling moraines, and hardwood forest, all within the Huron River watershed. Sites tend to be wooded and moderately sloped, so leveling blocks are useful for larger rigs.

Things to do near Bingham Farms

Water is the main draw. Proud Lake Recreation Area sits on the Huron River with canoe and kayak rentals available at the campground concession, plus a buoyed swim area in the modern campground. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area holds the longest inland beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, along with a boat launch and a fishing pier. Cyclists head to Pontiac Lake for its 11-mile mountain bike trail, ranked among the Top 100 trails in the United States and considered one of the more technical routes in southeast Michigan. Highland Recreation Area layers in more than ten inland lakes and the Haven Hill Natural Area, a former Edsel Ford estate with mixed swamp forest and hardwood stands. For rainy days, The Henry Ford and Greenfield Village in Dearborn and the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak are both within a 30-minute drive.

Peak RV season runs mid-May through Labor Day. Modern loops at Proud Lake and Pontiac Lake book heavily on summer weekends, and Michigan state park sites open six months ahead on a rolling window, so July and August dates typically start filling in January and February. Holiday weekends, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, are the tightest. Spring is cool and wet, with the Huron River running high and trails often muddy through April. Wildflowers peak in May, and biting insects become noticeable in low-lying areas by early June. Fall brings the region's best camping weather: crisp nights, hardwood color from late September through mid-October, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter camping is available at select loops in Proud Lake and Highland, but water systems are shut down and only vault toilets remain open. Snow cover typically supports cross-country skiing and snowshoeing from late December into February.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book near Bingham Farms

State park sites at Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, Proud Lake Recreation Area, and Highland Recreation Area are reserved through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com, on a six-month rolling window that opens at 8 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. A Michigan Recreation Passport is also required on every vehicle entering a state park or state forest campground, and can be added to a Michigan license plate registration or purchased at the gate. Private parks use their own platforms. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books through the Sun Outdoors site and Campspot, and Camp Dearborn is reserved directly through the City of Dearborn. For summer weekends, aim to book eight to twelve weeks out, and set a cancellation alert if a preferred lakeside loop shows full.

What to expect on site

State park modern loops in this area generally offer 30- or 50-amp electric, back-in sites with gravel or grass pads, a central bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers, and a sanitation station near the entrance. Sewer at the site is uncommon outside private parks. Proud Lake Recreation Area, for example, has 130 sites arranged on two loops with electric service, and its dump station doubles as the only RV fill point. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley (the former Haas Lake Park) is built around four on-site lakes and offers water-and-electric or full-hookup RV sites alongside tent and rental options. Camp Dearborn adds cabins and tent-friendly sections alongside RV loops. Sites can be uneven, cell coverage is generally strong across Oakland County, and firewood must be sourced locally to comply with Michigan's out-of-area wood restrictions.
