Campgrounds near Birmingham, Michigan
Birmingham sits in Oakland County, a short drive from a cluster of Michigan Department of Natural Resources recreation areas that concentrate most of the region's RV camping. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area spans 3,745 acres and features camping, trails, a fishing pier, paddlesports and amenities for horseback riding, though RV renters should verify current campground status before booking, as the modern campground and A-frame cabin are closed for planned updates to the sanitation station, with reopening anticipated in a later season.
Proud Lake Recreation Area covers roughly 3,000 acres on the Huron River in Oakland County, about 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access and an extensive trail system. Highland Recreation Area spans about 5,900 acres in north Oakland County, roughly 14 miles west of Pontiac, with rustic camping inside the park.
Private options round out the area. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley provides full-hookup RV sites west of Birmingham, and Clearwater Campground offers another privately operated alternative for renters who prefer resort-style amenities over state-park rustic sites.
Things to do near Birmingham
Water is the main draw. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, a model airplane flying field, an off-leash fenced dog area, and an 11-mile mountain bike trail ranked among the Top 100 Trails in the United States and considered one of the most technical in southeast Michigan.
Fishing is popular on the Huron River and Proud Lake, and the park's section of the Huron River is managed as a trout stream and stocked each year. Proud Lake sits within a chain of smaller lakes linked by shallow river sections that are well suited to kayaking as the Huron River winds through the park.
Highland Recreation Area includes more than 10 inland lakes for fishing and paddling, the Haven Hill Natural Area, remnants of the Edsel Ford estate, and a swim beach on Teeple Lake.

Summer is the primary camping season across southeast Michigan's state recreation areas. Weekends fill early, and Pontiac Lake in particular is an Oakland County favorite that fills quickly. Weekend stays draw crowds and RVs in volume, so midweek visits offer more space at Proud Lake and comparable parks.
Shoulder seasons work well for RV renters who want cooler temperatures and open sites. Proud Lake's campground is open year-round, and Highland Recreation Area supports cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter, though most sites are rustic and unplowed. Fall brings cooler nights and thinner crowds, and Proud Lake hosts Halloween-season events including site decorating, trick-or-treating, costume contests and hayrides for families.
Before paddling or fishing the Huron River, note that Do Not Eat Fish and Avoid Foam advisories have been issued for sections of the Huron River and associated water bodies in Oakland, Livingston, Washtenaw and Wayne counties because of high levels of PFAS. Check current advisories before eating anything caught.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book a campsite
State-park sites near Birmingham are booked through the Michigan DNR system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Reservations are available up to six months in advance, and popular summer weekends should be locked in as soon as the booking window opens.
Every vehicle entering a state park needs a pass. The Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds and state trail parking lots, and it does not cover local, county, municipal or metropolitan parks or recreation areas.
Private parks such as Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and Clearwater Campground use their own reservation systems and often accept bookings further out than the state window.
What to expect on site
State recreation areas near Birmingham range from full-service modern campgrounds to bare-bones rustic loops. At Proud Lake, sites are back-in with grass or cement pads and include 30- or 50-amp electrical service, fire rings and picnic tables, with a modern bathhouse, flush toilets, hot showers, and a sanitation station with potable water for RVs. Water for RV fill is available at the dump station, and spigots are placed at several locations in the campground.
Highland Recreation Area offers a rustic experience with running water, dumpster access and vault toilets, and its sites can accommodate larger RVs, but there are no hookups. Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., and two vehicles are allowed per campsite.

On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and luxury Class A motorhomes from $300 and up. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by budget and find a cheap RV rental in Birmingham that still has everything you need. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Birmingham, MI?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Birmingham, MI. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every RV on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before your trip. Most first-time renters in Oakland County are surprised how straightforward the process is.

You're covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RV rental in Birmingham booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you have peace of mind for the entire trip. During checkout, you'll choose from different protection plan tiers depending on the level of coverage you want, which helps shield you from most damages to the vehicle. Each plan provides meaningful financial protection and removes most of the worry that keeps first-timers from booking. Pair that with a thorough host walkthrough at pickup, and you can leave the Detroit metro area feeling fully prepared for your Michigan adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Birmingham RV trip plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Birmingham, MI, which means you don't have to decipher different host rules from one listing to the next. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If something unexpected pops up, the RVezy support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip. Lock in that Memorial Day weekend rental with confidence and sort the details later.

Absolutely, and your dog is going to love Michigan. Plenty of hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Birmingham, MI, just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching. Once you arrive, Michigan state parks welcome leashed pets at campgrounds and most trails, with exceptions at designated swim beaches and protected habitats. Nearby favorites like Proud Lake Recreation Area and Addison Oaks County Park have shaded, wooded sites perfect for dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about a grassy area at pickup, which makes the orientation easier when you're traveling with a four-legged co-pilot.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regs/petsCan the RV be delivered to me in Birmingham?
Yes, RV delivery in Birmingham is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a big rig through metro Detroit traffic on I-696 or Woodward Avenue. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a campground like Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township, or even a tailgate spot. They'll set up the awning, level the rig, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before leaving you to enjoy your trip. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it, and message hosts directly to confirm distance fees, which typically run $2 to $5 per mile.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive on a Birmingham RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You've got tons of range from Birmingham, and many hosts on RVezy offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages, perfect for a Michigan RV trip. From Birmingham, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 240 miles northwest (around 4 hours), Mackinaw City sits about 260 miles north (around 4.5 hours), Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is roughly 430 miles (7 hours), Traverse City wine country is 230 miles (3.75 hours), and Holland State Park on Lake Michigan is 175 miles west (2.5 hours). Each listing shows the host's daily mileage allowance clearly. If you're planning a longer Great Lakes loop, look for an RV rental with unlimited mileage or buy a bulk mileage add-on at booking to save versus per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Birmingham, MI?

Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in Waterford has lakeside sites and a beach. Addison Oaks County Park in Leonard features modern sites with water and electric. Groveland Oaks County Park in Holly is great for families with a swim lake and disc golf. For full hookups, Haas Lake Park RV Campground in New Hudson is big-rig friendly with multiple on-site lakes. midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Birmingham, MI?
Late May through early October is prime time for RV camping in Birmingham, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s in May to mid-80s in July and back to the 60s and 70s in September. July and August are peak summer with the warmest lake temperatures at nearby Cass and Union Lakes, but they also book up fastest. September is the local insider's favorite: fewer mosquitoes, cooler nights, and stunning fall color across Oakland County starting in late September. Winter rentals are possible too with a heated, four-season RV, but most state park campgrounds operate from April through October, so plan accordingly.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. How do I know I'll be okay?
You're going to do great, and you won't be alone in figuring it out. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump valves. If you'd rather skip city driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and they'll set the RV up at your campsite. The Birmingham area is also surrounded by easy, low-stress drives: Proud Lake, Holly, and Pontiac Lake recreation areas are all 30 to 45 minutes away on familiar roads. Pro tip for anyone first time renting an RV: pick a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your debut trip, they drive much more like a large van.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering services like flat tires, lockouts, jump starts, towing, and mechanical issues anywhere in Michigan or beyond. If something happens on I-75 heading toward Mackinaw or you have an issue at the campground in Holly, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct resource through the RVezy messaging system, they know their rig better than anyone and can troubleshoot the small stuff like a tripped breaker or finicky water pump in seconds. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Birmingham RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Birmingham makes interstate travel easy: the Ohio border is just 90 minutes south, Indiana is about 4 hours west, and you can reach Chicago in 4.5 hours. Canada is also realistic from Birmingham since the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge are just 30 minutes away, but cross-border travel into Canada depends on the individual host's listing and insurance, so message them directly before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Bring your passport for Canada and you can pair a Birmingham trip with Niagara Falls or Toronto in a single loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Michigan RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so let's make it predictable. Michigan gas prices typically run around $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon for regular unleaded according to AAA, with metro Detroit usually close to the state average. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs around 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans 15 to 20 mpg. For a 500-mile loop from Birmingham to Sleeping Bear Dunes and back in a Class C, budget roughly $150 to $225 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to find the cheapest stations, and check prices in Flint or Lansing where rates can run lower than Birmingham.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=MIHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Birmingham?
Booking early pays off big in Michigan. Michigan state park campgrounds open reservations 6 months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com, and popular Oakland County parks like Addison Oaks and Groveland Oaks accept campsite reservations months in advance through the Oakland County Parks reservation system. For summer weekends at Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake, or any of the best campgrounds near Birmingham, MI, aim to book 3 to 6 months ahead, especially around July 4th and Labor Day. Shoulder-season trips in May or September often have availability just a week out. Pro tip: if a site shows full, set up a Campnab alert, cancellations open up regularly as travel plans shift.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Birmingham, MI?
Birmingham sits in a well-maintained metro Detroit area with mostly flat terrain and a strong highway grid, which makes RV driving easier than people expect. You'll want to avoid the I-696 and I-75 corridors during rush hour (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.) where traffic backs up fast. Watch for low clearances on older bridges along Woodward Avenue and in downtown Detroit, your RV manual lists your exact height, and most rentals here run 10 to 12 feet tall. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: take Telegraph Road or M-59 to escape the metro and reach lake country in 30 minutes.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Birmingham?
Local campgrounds are well equipped for RV camping near Birmingham. Most modern Michigan state park sites at Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake, and Holly Recreation Area offer 30 or 50 amp electric, potable water spigots, and dump stations on-site. Oakland County parks like Addison Oaks and Groveland Oaks have modern sites with water and electric, heated bathhouses with showers, and firewood available at the camp store. For full hookups including sewer at your site, head to Haas Lake Park RV Campground in New Hudson or the Detroit/Greenfield KOA. Cell service is strong throughout the region on major carriers, so streaming and remote work are generally no problem.
midnrreservations.com/What's inside a typical RV rental in Birmingham, MI?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in Birmingham comes with sleeping for 4 to 8, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most rigs include a dinette that converts to a bed, an outdoor awning, and basic cookware and bedding, though always check the listing's amenities list. Many hosts also include generators (great for boondocking near Holly), Bluetooth stereos, and outdoor TVs. WiFi is hit or miss, so plan to use your phone hotspot or pick a host who offers a mobile router add-on for a true campervan rental Birmingham experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect?
Hosts make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons for an RV rental Michigan trip from Birmingham include camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), generator use ($10 to $25 per day), bike racks, kayak racks, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees ($50 to $100). Pickup is usually at the host's home in Birmingham, Royal Oak, Troy, or Bloomfield Hills, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing, expect 100 to 150 free miles per day on most rentals, with overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. One-way trips aren't standard, but you can message the host directly to ask about exceptions.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Birmingham%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online, no awkward cash handoffs at pickup. When you book your RV rental in Michigan through RVezy, you pay through the secure platform, which protects both you and the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card around the time of pickup, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig, and it's released back to you after drop-off assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues, do a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and follow the mileage and generator-hour rules in the listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the most popular road trip destinations from Birmingham, MI?
Birmingham is perfectly placed for a family RV trip Michigan adventure. Top destinations include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (about 240 miles, 4 hours) for towering dunes and Lake Michigan beaches, Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (about 260 miles, 4.5 hours) for fudge and ferry rides to Mackinac Island, Traverse City wine country (about 230 miles, 3.75 hours) for vineyards and cherry farms, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula (about 430 miles, 7 hours) for sea caves and waterfalls, and Holland State Park (about 175 miles, 2.5 hours) for the iconic Big Red lighthouse.
