Campgrounds near Bloomfield Hills

Bloomfield Hills sits in Oakland County, surrounded by a cluster of Michigan state recreation areas within a 30 to 45 minute drive. The closest options for RV travellers include Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, Proud Lake Recreation Area, and Highland Recreation Area, all operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Private options nearby include Clearwater Campground and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley. Proud Lake Recreation Area covers roughly 3,000 acres on the Huron River and Proud Lake, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites, fishing and paddling opportunities, and an extensive trail system. The campground features two loops and 130 sites with 30- or 50-amp electrical service and access to a sanitation station. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area and Highland Recreation Area offer similar modern camping with lake access, trails, and boat launches. The area works well as a base for families: campgrounds sit close to Detroit and Ann Arbor but are surrounded by lakes, forest, and trails. Sites tend to be wooded or grassy with picnic tables and fire rings, and most state park loops offer electric service without individual water or sewer hookups.

Things to do near Bloomfield Hills

Water activities dominate the region. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent at Proud Lake in both the day-use area and modern campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The park's section of the Huron River is managed as a Type I trout stream. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area and Highland Recreation Area both offer lake swimming, motorised boating, and shoreline fishing. On land, expect a strong trail network. Proud Lake has about 20 miles of trails to explore around the lake, the river, and the marshland. About 10 miles of those trails are open to mountain biking, with trails in the western portion of the recreation area shared with equestrian riders and hikers. Families staying at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley or Clearwater Campground can also reach Kensington Metropark, Cranbrook, and the Detroit Zoo for day trips.

The Michigan state park camping season for modern loops in this area generally runs from spring through late fall. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, when weekends at Proud Lake, Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, and Highland Recreation Area routinely sell out well in advance. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved six months to the date of arrival in advance. Spring is cool and wet: trails can be muddy, the Huron River runs high, and inland trout fishing opens in late April. Summer brings warm swimming conditions, festivals, and heavier bug pressure near marshy sections. Early fall is often the most comfortable stretch, with lower humidity, colour change in the hardwoods, and easier weekend availability. Winter camping is limited but permitted at some state recreation areas, with rustic conditions, vault toilets in place of full bathhouses, and cross-country skiing on ungroomed trails. Private parks such as Clearwater Campground and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley set their own seasonal windows, so confirm dates before booking.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

What to expect at Bloomfield Hills campgrounds

State park campgrounds in this area are modern but not full-hookup. Sites have electric hookups, but there is no water or sewer at the RV sites, though the campground maintains clean restroom facilities. A central sanitation station is provided, so RV renters should arrive with a full fresh-water tank. Sites at Proud Lake are generally not considered flat, so bring levelling blocks. Cell coverage is generally strong across Oakland County, and most loops sit under mature hardwoods with limited solar exposure. Only certified heat-treated firewood may be brought into or purchased at Michigan state parks to prevent the spread of invasive insects. Pets are allowed along the entire length of the Huron River and Proud Lake shoreline, other than the designated swim beach in the modern campground. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the day-use areas east of Wixom Road from April 1 through Labor Day, unless the park manager has granted written authorization.
