Campgrounds near Farmington, Michigan
Farmington sits in Oakland County, roughly a half-hour drive from a cluster of state recreation areas and private RV parks in the Huron River watershed. Most nearby camping is concentrated west and northwest of the city, along the M-59 and I-96 corridors, within lakes-and-woodlands terrain rather than open prairie or shoreline dunes.
The closest options are managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres, is located on the scenic Huron River and borders Proud Lake, and the park is home to a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites, fishing and paddling opportunities and an extensive trail system. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area includes the headwaters of the Clinton, Huron and Shiawassee rivers, and the 3,745-acre park supports year-round recreational opportunities within its scenic interior.
Private and municipal options round out the area. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley offers grass sites, mature trees, lake access, and full-hookup RV sites with 30- or 50-amp service, with no tent camping permitted. Camp Dearborn is a unique 626-acre recreational retreat in Milford, offering a wide range of overnight camping options, including rustic cabins and resort cabins, as well as sites for camper-provided tents or trailers, with amenities including a half-mile of sandy beach, athletic fields and tennis courts, shaded picnic areas, swimming and fishing lakes, and a 27-hole championship golf course. Highland Recreation Area sits nearby with additional wooded sites and equestrian facilities.
Things to do near Farmington
Water recreation drives most trips. There are numerous paddling opportunities on both the Huron River and Proud Lake, with Huron River access at the Huron Fishing Site and the boating access site adjacent to kayak rentals, and Proud Lake access in the northeastern portion of the park off Bass Lake Road. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent in both the day-use area and modern campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Trails and beaches fill the rest of the itinerary. The 11-mile mountain bike trail has been ranked as one of the Top 100 Trails in the United States and is considered one of the most technical trails in southeast Michigan. The park features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, a model airplane flying field, an expansive picnic area, and an off-leash, fenced area for dogs.
For days off-site, downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Novi shopping are all within a short drive of the Farmington-area campgrounds.

The camping season in southeast Michigan runs primarily from spring through late fall. Camp Dearborn operates May 1 through November 1, with peak season running June 14 through August 15, packed with extra programs and events for all ages. State recreation areas skew earlier and later: the Proud Lake campground is open year-round, and reservations are available through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months in advance.
One significant closure affects the area. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area's modern campground, including the A-frame, is closed for the 2026 season to allow for planned updates to the sanitation station, and it is anticipated the campground will reopen September 1, 2026. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open; however, the sanitation station is not available to campers.
Summer weekends fill fast at the state parks, especially near holidays. Fall brings cooler nights, changing color along the Huron River corridor, and Halloween-themed weekends at several private and municipal campgrounds. Winter camping is limited to a handful of state park loops with electricity.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near Farmington
State recreation areas use one central system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). This covers Proud Lake Recreation Area, Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, and Highland Recreation Area. Reservations are available through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months in advance.
The Recreation Passport is required for vehicle access to state parks and recreation areas, state-managed boating access sites, state forest campgrounds, thousands of miles of trails and other outdoor spaces, all year long. It can be added when renewing a Michigan license plate or purchased at any park entrance.
Private and municipal parks book directly. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley takes reservations through the Sun Outdoors website. Camp Dearborn takes reservations through its own booking system, with the office open Monday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
What to expect at Farmington-area campgrounds
State-park sites in this region are generally wooded, back-in, and electric-only. At Proud Lake, all sites are back-in with either grass or cement pads and include 30- or 50-amp electrical service, fire rings, and picnic tables, and the campground provides a modern bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers, plus a sanitation station with three lanes and potable water for RV campers. Individual water and sewer hookups are not standard at Michigan DNR modern campgrounds; plan on filling fresh tanks before arrival and using the dump station on the way out.
Private resorts run larger and offer more hookups. Waterfront RV sites at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley provide full hookups with 30- or 50-amp electric service and gravel pads that can accommodate larger rigs with slide-outs. Tent camping is not permitted at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley.
Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., with quiet hours 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
