Michigan state recreation areas including Proud Lake and Highland use a single reservation system. Reservations are available through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months in advance, with check-in at 3:00 p.m. and checkout at 1:00 p.m. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Private campgrounds book directly. Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA website and app, and holiday and special-event weekends may have additional deposit or cancellation requirements. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books through the Sun Outdoors site or Campspot. For summer weekends and holiday weekends, secure reservations as soon as the booking window opens. Waterfront and full-hookup sites go first.

What to expect

Expect a mix of resort-style and rustic options within an hour of Garden City. Private parks offer full hookups, planned activities, and interior roads suited to larger rigs. Back-in sites at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley include gravel pads that can accommodate up to 45 feet with room for slide-outs, plus a picnic table and fire pit.
