Campgrounds near Hazel Park
Hazel Park is an inner-ring suburb of Detroit in Oakland County, so RV renters staying close to the city will not find campgrounds within the immediate limits. Most trip planning centers on two zones: the lakes and state recreation areas northwest of the city, and the Windsor-Essex region across the Detroit River in Ontario. Both are reachable within an hour under normal traffic.
To the northwest, Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area sits inside a large state recreation area with modern electric sites, wooded loops, a beach on Pontiac Lake, and trail networks. Across the Canadian border, Windsor Campground Inc, Wildwood Golf and RV Resort, and Sun Retreats Amherstburg cluster in Essex County within roughly 30 to 45 kilometres of downtown Windsor and the Detroit River crossings.
Renters should factor in border wait times at the Ambassador Bridge or Detroit-Windsor Tunnel when choosing between Michigan and Ontario options, and confirm passport or enhanced-license requirements before booking a Canadian site.
Things to do near Hazel Park
At Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, the draws are on-water and on-trail. The park features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, a model airplane flying field, a modern and rustic equestrian campground, an expansive picnic area, and an off-leash, fenced area for dogs. The 11-mile mountain bike trail has been ranked as one of the "Top 100 Trails" in the United States and is considered one of the most technical trails in southeast Michigan. Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are available on the all-sports lake, with a boat launch near the park entrance and an additional gravel ramp on Tackles Drive.
Across the river, Sun Retreats Amherstburg leans family resort, with a playground, horseshoe pits, a family pool and splash pad, an adult/teen pool, and planned activities. Day trips from any of these bases can include the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, and the riverfront trail on the Windsor side.

The prime RV window in southeast Michigan runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with July and August the busiest and most humid. Spring nights can drop near freezing into April, and shoulder-season campers should expect variable weather and wet trails. Fall brings crisp air and color through October, then a rapid slide toward winter.
A key planning note: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area's modern campground, including the A-frame, is closed for the 2026 season to allow for planned updates to the sanitation station, and it is anticipated to reopen September 1, 2026. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open; however, the sanitation station is not available to campers during the closure. RV renters targeting Pontiac Lake should verify status before booking or shift to another Michigan state park in the region.
Ontario private resorts on the Windsor-Amherstburg side generally operate a longer season than northern Michigan parks, but pool and activity programming typically wind down after Labour Day.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

Booking and how to reserve
Michigan state park sites, including Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area when open, are reserved through the state system. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved up to six months to the date of arrival in advance at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. It is advisable to reserve early for summer weekends, as popular Oakland County parks fill quickly. Private Ontario resorts including Windsor Campground Inc, Wildwood Golf and RV Resort, and Sun Retreats Amherstburg book directly through their own websites or by phone. At Sun Retreats Amherstburg, RV and tent site check-in is 2:00 pm and check-out is 11:00 am, while vacation rental check-in is 3:00 pm.
What to expect
At Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, sites are wooded and set back from the beach area across two loops totaling around 176 sites. The campground offers electrical hookups, hot showers, and modern restrooms, with most sites providing 20- or 30-amp service and some 50-amp sites available. Individual sites lack water and sewer hookups, but there is a sanitation station on site when the modern campground is open. Campfires are permitted in designated fire rings only.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hazel Park, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hazel Park, MI?
RV rental in Hazel Park is an affordable alternative to hotels in the Detroit metro area. Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to all listings. Every reservation includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional protections apply for situations like severe weather or natural disasters (Michigan winters can be unpredictable, after all). Cancellation rules don't change from one Hazel Park listing to another, which keeps things simple. If plans shift, just log in and manage your booking, or reach out to RVezy support. That flexibility is one big reason first-time renters feel confident clicking Book on a Detroit-area RV rental.

Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and you're set.

michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hazel Park?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for any Hazel Park RV trip. Summer days (June through August) typically run 75 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit with warm evenings perfect for campfires, while September delivers crisp 60 to 75 degree days, fewer mosquitoes, and the start of Michigan's spectacular fall colors up north. May and early June bring blossoming orchards and lower campground rates. Winters are a different beast: temperatures regularly drop into the teens and snow is common from December through March, so most private campgrounds close from late October to mid-April. If you love quiet shoulder-season camping, target early October for a Lake Michigan color tour you won't forget.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay, most first-time renters in Hazel Park say the orientation was easier than they expected. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, slides, and tank operation, and they're a text away during your whole trip. For your first time renting an RV, consider a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer (under 25 feet), both are forgiving to drive and fit easily into Michigan campground sites. Avoid rush-hour drives on I-696 or I-75 when leaving town. Pro tip: do a short test loop in a quiet area like a large municipal lot in Madison Heights before heading north. Confidence kicks in within an hour.
rvezy.com/blog/rv-driving-tips-for-beginnersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-75 or a battery issue at Bishop Lake Campground is just a phone call away. Help can be dispatched anywhere in Michigan, whether you're in metro Detroit or hours north near Mackinaw City. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about specific systems on their RV (water pump quirks, generator start, slide-outs). RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave Hazel Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hazel Park RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border travel into Canada is possible for many Hazel Park rentals, and with Windsor, Ontario, just minutes away through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, it's a tempting add-on for a Niagara Falls or Toronto loop. You'll need explicit approval from the host before booking, since not every owner allows Canadian travel, and the protection coverage needs to be confirmed for cross-border use. Just message the host directly from the listing page before you book. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring your passport, any vehicle paperwork the host provides, and you're set for an international RV road trip from Hazel Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan, and around 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle when pulling a travel trailer. Michigan gas prices typically sit near the national average, with stations along I-75 in Oakland County often offering competitive rates. A round-trip from Hazel Park to Traverse City (about 470 miles) in a Class C will run roughly $130 to $170 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Hazel Park or Madison Heights before heading north, prices can climb noticeably in resort areas like Petoskey.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Hazel Park?
For Michigan state parks, reservations open 6 months ahead of your arrival date through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and waterfront sites at popular parks like Pontiac Lake, Holly, and Algonac can sell out within minutes for summer weekends. Aim to book the morning the window opens for July and August dates. County parks like Addison Oaks and Groveland Oaks fill up just as fast, especially holiday weekends. For best campgrounds near Hazel Park midweek, you can often snag spots just a few weeks out. Don't forget the Michigan Recreation Passport for entry into all state parks. Pro tip: set a calendar alarm 6 months out at 8 a.m.
midnrreservations.com/What are local driving conditions like around Hazel Park?
Hazel Park sits at the busy crossroads of I-75 and I-696, so the smart move is to pick up your RV outside of weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.). Roads are flat and well-maintained, but watch for low clearances in parts of Detroit, avoid the Davison Freeway (M-8) with anything over 11 feet, and stay on the interstates with taller rigs. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most travelers head out April through October. Construction season runs heavy May through September, check MDOT's Mi Drive map before departure. Once you clear M-59 heading north, traffic thins fast and you're cruising into cottage country.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hazel Park?
Most campgrounds within 60 miles of Hazel Park offer solid amenities. Modern Michigan state park sites (like Pontiac Lake and Holly Recreation Area) include electric hookups, potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. County parks like Addison Oaks and Groveland Oaks step it up with water and electric hookups, camp stores, and swimming areas. For dumping or filling between trips, several Oakland County park stations are reliable options. Many state park dump stations are available to non-registered campers for a small fee plus a Recreation Passport. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp electrical adapter, just in case.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's actually inside the RV I rent?
More than you might think. Most RV rentals in Hazel Park come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert into extra sleeping space, a kitchen with refrigerator, stovetop, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, and a furnace for cool Michigan evenings. Larger Class C motorhomes and travel trailers often include a TV, onboard generator, and outdoor awning. Seatbelts are provided for the listed sleeps count, important for family trips. Many hosts include kitchen kits, bedding, and outdoor chairs. Wi-Fi varies, so plan to use a phone hotspot up north. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps 6 or Sleeps 8 if you've got a family RV trip Hazel Park style in mind.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hazel%20Park%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get when I rent an RV in Hazel Park?
RVezy hosts in the Detroit area offer a great range of add-ons that make a motorhome rental Hazel Park trip even easier. Popular options include delivery and setup (often a per-mile fee), generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, outdoor grills, camp chairs, kitchen packages, bedding and linen kits, and even kayaks or stand-up paddleboards for lake trips. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home, with a thorough walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary, look for unlimited-mileage listings if you're heading to the UP. All add-ons appear during the booking flow, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a setup package for true door-to-campsite ease.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hazel%20Park%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure. You pay through the platform during booking using a credit or debit card, no cash handoffs with the host. Your trip total covers the nightly rate, any add-ons you select, the protection plan, and applicable taxes. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup, the amount varies by listing but typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 for Detroit-area rentals. As long as you return the RV in the same condition (clean, fueled, tanks emptied per the host's instructions), the deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hazel Park during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals are available in Hazel Park, and they can be magical if you're heading to a ski weekend at Mt. Holly or a snowy getaway up north. Look for listings that mention four-season use, heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and shore power compatibility, these features keep water lines from freezing when temperatures dip into the teens. Many private Michigan campgrounds close from late October to mid-April, but year-round options exist, including select state parks like Highland Recreation Area. Pro tip: travel with extra propane (the furnace burns through it quickly in single-digit weather), use RV antifreeze in waste tanks, and ask your host for a winter walkthrough. A snowy Michigan RV camping trip is unforgettable.
