Campgrounds near Hillman, Michigan
Hillman sits in Montmorency County in northeast Michigan, surrounded by state forest, inland lakes, and the shallow, stump-filled expanse of Fletcher Pond. The village serves as a base for RV travelers targeting fishing, paddling, and off-road-vehicle trails, and it lies within roughly an hour's drive of Alpena and Lake Huron.
Campground options in the area split into two categories. On the private side, Jacks Landing Resort and Paradise Lodge Resort operate lakefront campgrounds on Fletcher Pond with a mix of electric and rustic sites. On the public side, Clear Lake State Park is home to a modern campground, trails, overnight lodging facilities, a designated swim beach and a disc golf course, while Beaver Lake Park and Sunken Lake Park are Alpena County parks with modern campsites west of Alpena.
Most sites in the area handle standard travel trailers and Class C motorhomes; larger rigs should confirm site length before booking.
Things to do around Hillman
Fishing drives most trips. Fletcher Pond is known for panfish, bass, and pike, and Jacks Landing Resort sits directly on the water. Beaver Lake is spring-fed, unusually clear, and one of the deepest lakes in the state, with fishing, boating, swimming and modern campsites available at Beaver Lake Park. Clear Lake is a 133-acre spring-fed lake reaching depths of 90 feet, stocked for trout, splake, and smallmouth bass, with a swim beach and paddlesport rentals at the park.
Off-road riders have direct trail access from Clear Lake State Park. The park is one of just a few state parks that allow the operation of an ORV between the campground and nearby ORV trails, and riders can access the Atlanta ORV route and the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail from the park. Hiking, wildlife viewing, and elk-country drives round out the area, with elk often heard bugling in spring and fall.

The camping season in northeast Michigan is short and concentrated. Alpena County parks, including Beaver Lake Park and Sunken Lake Park, run a defined window: the camping season is from May 15 until October 15, with Beaver Lake Park listed as open May 15 to October 1. Clear Lake State Park is a modern state park campground with a spring-through-fall season, and private resorts on Fletcher Pond generally run from spring through late fall.
Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest water, the busiest campgrounds, and the highest demand for lakefront and electric sites. Weekend reservations at popular sites often fill weeks or months out, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are the tightest.
Spring and fall are quieter but colder. Late May can still see frost overnight, and October brings fall color, elk bugling, and the first hunting-season traffic. Winter camping is available at Clear Lake State Park for self-contained rigs, but water systems are shut off and most private resorts are closed.
How to book a campground near Hillman
Public and private campgrounds use different systems. For Clear Lake State Park, reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Michigan state park campsites can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance, so booking six months out from the target arrival date is the standard strategy for summer weekends. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas.
Alpena County parks, including Beaver Lake Park and Sunken Lake Park, take reservations after January 2 each year through the county's online booking portal or by phone, with a one-night deposit due in advance. Jacks Landing Resort and Paradise Lodge Resort book directly by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the area are paved two-lane state highways (M-32, M-33, M-65) with narrower county roads leading to campgrounds. Cell service is spotty once past Hillman village, and grocery restocking is easier in Atlanta, Lachine, or Alpena than in Hillman itself.
At Clear Lake State Park the modern campground is divided into upper and lower loops, with several pull-through sites shaded by oaks and pines and views of Clear Lake, plus a designated swimming beach and a boat access site. County parks and private resorts on Fletcher Pond offer a mix of modern and rustic sites, with Beaver Lake Park listing 30-amp and 50-amp electric service.
Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late May into July, black bears in state forest areas (store food properly), and at state park campgrounds a 3 p.m. check-in with 1 p.m. checkout and quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Many Hillman hosts bundle camp chairs, kitchen kits, and bedding for free, so check the listing's included items before adding paid extras.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hillman, MI?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hillman, Michigan. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any rig on the RVezy platform, including Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Approval is typically quick, often within hours.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included for trips around Hillman?
Yes, every RV rental in Hillman booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind whether you're parked at Fletcher Pond or driving the back roads of Pigeon River Country State Forest. During checkout, you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip, so you stay in control. If a tire blows on M-32 or you need a jump at Emerick Park, one phone call gets help dispatched. That's why thousands of first-time renters feel confident hitting the road.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is RVezy's cancellation policy for a Hillman RV rental?
Booking your Hillman RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and every booking includes a grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is. You'll see the full cancellation details on the RVezy website before you confirm. Book early for July and August when Hillman's lakefront sites at Jack's Landing and Emerick Park sell out fast, knowing you have a clear policy if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hillman?
Absolutely, four-legged co-pilots are welcome on plenty of Hillman rigs. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Hillman has available, and message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed preferences. Emerick Park on the Thunder Bay River allows leashed dogs, and the trails through Mackinaw State Forest just west of town are perfect for letting them stretch their legs. Bring a long tie-out leash and a collapsible water bowl. Summer afternoons can reach the mid-80s, so plan walks for the cooler dawn and dusk hours, when the elk are most active anyway.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Hillman?
Yes, RV delivery in Hillman is one of the easiest ways to skip the driving stress entirely. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Emerick Park, Jack's Landing on Fletcher Pond, Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort, or even a private cabin, then set up the awning, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it and how far they will go. Most Hillman hosts cover Montmorency, Alpena, and Presque Isle counties. This is a smart pick if you are new to RVing or arriving by plane through Alpena's regional airport, about 35 miles east.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive on a Hillman RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have room to roam. Many Hillman hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal if you're planning a Hillman RV trip up to the Mackinac Bridge (about 95 miles), over to Tahquamenon Falls (around 170 miles), or down to Sleeping Bear Dunes (around 170 miles via Gaylord). The mileage policy is shown clearly on every listing, and extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. If your itinerary is mostly basecamp style at Fletcher Pond or Lake Avalon, the standard allotment is plenty. For a true loop around the Sunrise Side, filter for unlimited miles upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganWhat are the best campgrounds near Hillman, MI for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Hillman for RV camping include Emerick Park, a Village-run gem on the Thunder Bay River with full hookups from around $30 a night; Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort on M-32 with big-rig pull-throughs and an on-site restaurant; Jack's Landing Resort on Fletcher Pond, a classic with electric and water sites plus a dump station; and Ess Lake State Forest Campground, about 15 minutes north with wooded rustic sites. Book Michigan state forest sites through MiDNRReservations.com; Emerick Park and the private resorts take direct bookings.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to visit Hillman, MI in an RV?
Hillman shines from late May through mid-October, with peak weather in July and August when daytime highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s and lake water finally warms up for swimming. September is the local secret: crisp days in the 60s, fall color along the Thunder Bay River, fewer bugs, and elk bugling season in Pigeon River Country State Forest, home to one of the largest free-roaming elk herds east of the Mississippi. Winters here regularly dip below zero with heavy lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close by late October or early November. For a four-season adventure, book a Hillman host who offers a winterized rig with heated tanks for ice fishing on Fletcher Pond.
weather.gov/apx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Hillman a good idea for a first-timer?
You'll be in great hands. First time renting an RV in Hillman is genuinely beginner-friendly because the roads are quiet two-lane highways like M-32 and M-65, with light traffic and no mountain passes or big-city merging to worry about. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, holding tanks, propane, and leveling. You can message the host any time during your trip if a warning light comes on or you're unsure how something works. Pick a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Hillman for your first trip, then practice backing into your site at Emerick Park before sunset.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip near Hillman?
You're never stranded. Every RV rental in Hillman booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US-23, a dead battery at Lake Avalon, or a slide-out that won't retract can be resolved with one phone call. The dispatcher can send a tow or a mobile mechanic. You can also message your host directly through the app, since many Hillman owners live nearby in Atlanta, Alpena, or Lewiston. Cell coverage thins out in Pigeon River Country, so screenshot the RVezy support number before heading deep into the forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Hillman RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border trips into Ontario are often possible from Hillman, but confirm two things first: message the host through the listing to get their written approval, and check that your RVezy protection plan extends to Canada. The Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron is about 235 miles south, and the Sault Ste. Marie crossing is roughly 165 miles north. Bring your passport, vehicle registration, and the host's permission letter. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. An RV road trip from Hillman up to Sault Ste. Marie and across to Lake Superior Provincial Park makes a stunning long-weekend loop.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat fuel mileage should I budget for a motorhome rental in Hillman?
Budgeting is straightforward. A motorhome rental in Hillman typically averages 8 to 10 mpg for Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, and 16 to 20 mpg for Class B campervans or a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. The closest fuel stations are in Hillman village, Atlanta (about 10 miles west), and Alpena (about 35 miles east). For a 300-mile loop hitting Mackinac, Tahquamenon, and back, expect roughly $120 to $200 in fuel for a mid-sized Class C, depending on current prices. Top off in Alpena before heading into Pigeon River Country, where stations can be 20-plus miles apart.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground for my Hillman RV trip?
Plan ahead and you'll land prime spots. For July and August weekends, book Michigan state forest campgrounds like Ess Lake and Tomahawk Lake six months out through Michigan DNR's reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com, when the window opens. Emerick Park takes reservations directly and tends to fill up four to eight weeks before summer weekends. Jack's Landing and Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort use phone bookings and often have last-minute openings midweek. Hillman's annual summer celebrations bring extra demand, so secure your Emerick Park site months in advance for those weekends.
midnrreservations.com/What are the driving conditions like around Hillman?
Driving in and around Hillman is about as easy as RV travel gets. M-32 and M-33 are smooth, gently rolling two-lane highways with wide shoulders and minimal traffic outside summer holiday weekends. You won't face mountain grades, toll booths, or low bridges. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk on US-23 and the back roads through Mackinaw State Forest, especially in fall. Winter brings lake-effect snow and icy patches; if you're attempting a winter RV camping Hillman adventure, stick to plowed primary routes and carry traction aids. Avoid taking large Class A rigs onto unpaved seasonal roads in Pigeon River Country, where soft sand can trap a heavy chassis.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hillman?
Hillman-area campgrounds are well equipped for a comfortable stay. Emerick Park offers full hookups, hot showers, a sanitation dump station, a playground, and a boat ramp on the Thunder Bay River. Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort provides full hookups and on-site dining. Jack's Landing has a dump station and marina amenities on Fletcher Pond. Most Northeast Michigan state forest campgrounds are rustic with vault toilets and hand pumps only, so plan a hookup night every few days to top up fresh water and dump tanks.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat features and equipment come standard in a Hillman RV rental?
You'll find more than you'd expect. Most RVs listed in Hillman come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, real beds with mattresses, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, climate control, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid nights at Fletcher Pond. Many rigs include outdoor speakers, a TV, and propane grills. Wi-Fi varies; some hosts include a mobile hotspot, which is handy because cell signal weakens in the deeper state forest pockets west of town. Filter your search by sleeps count and bathroom type to match your group, then read the included amenities list line by line.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganWhat popular add-ons can I get with my Hillman RV rental?
Hillman hosts make trip prep simple with smart add-ons. Common extras include bike racks, kayak or canoe rentals for Fletcher Pond fishing, full linen and towel kits, camp chair and table sets, portable propane fire pits (great when burn bans are on), and extra generator hours for boondocking. Pickup and dropoff usually happens at the host's home or at your campground if you choose delivery. Mileage allowances are listed on every page, with extras charged per mile beyond the cap. Bundle the kitchen kit, bedding, and outdoor gear at booking, as hosts often discount packages versus à la carte adds.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillman%2C%20MichiganHow does the security deposit and payment work for a Hillman RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Hillman, RVezy charges the rental total through the platform, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good condition. To avoid surprises, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, refill propane and fuel to the starting level, and dump the tanks before returning. Keep your receipts from fuel and propane stops, just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Hillman, MI?
Hillman is perfectly positioned for a Northern Michigan RV road trip. Top routes from town include Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (about 95 miles, around 2 hours) for ferry trips to Mackinac Island; Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula (about 170 miles) for the famous root-beer-colored waterfalls; Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (around 170 miles via Gaylord) for towering Lake Michigan dunes; Alpena and the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (about 35 miles east) for glass-bottom shipwreck tours; and Pigeon River Country State Forest (about 45 miles west) for elk viewing at dawn. Late September pairs peak fall color with bugling elk, one of the best weeks to be here.
