Camping near Holly, Michigan
Holly sits in northern Oakland County, roughly midway between Pontiac and Flint, and functions as a base for a cluster of state recreation areas and private RV parks within a short drive of Detroit. Holly State Recreation Area covers roughly 8,000 acres of rolling woodlands and open fields, providing opportunities for hiking, camping, boating, disc golf, fishing and mountain biking, and is less than an hour from the Detroit metropolitan area.
RV travelers generally choose between two styles of stay. State-run campgrounds such as Holly Recreation Area and Highland Recreation Area offer wooded, lake-adjacent sites managed by the Michigan DNR, while private parks including Auburn Hills / Holly KOA, Holly Campground and Clearwater Campground add pools, playgrounds and full hookups aimed at families. Auburn Hills / Holly KOA sits on Grange Hall Road in Holly and is well-equipped for RVs of all sizes, with big-rig-friendly pull-through sites and full hookups including 30- and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer connections.
The area works well for weekend trips from southeast Michigan and for longer stays that use Holly as a hub for lake activities, trail riding and day trips into the Detroit metro.
Things to do around Holly
Water and trails dominate the itinerary. Holly Recreation Area rests among four lakes, and Heron Lake, the largest at 132 acres, is open to kayakers, canoers, and boats with quiet electric motors. The park features an 18-hole disc golf course, 35 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, a model airplane flying field, and opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating, and hunting, with cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter.
Highland Recreation Area adds serious trail mileage for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The park is home to more than 10 inland lakes, a designated swim beach, picnic areas, a boating access site, dog trial areas and a radio-controlled flying field, plus 44 miles of trails open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers.
Off-road drivers head to the nearby Holly Oaks ORV Park, which utilizes former and active sand and gravel mines, and families often build a weekend around the Michigan Renaissance Festival held near Holly in late summer and early fall.

The main camping season runs spring through fall. Private parks in the area typically operate on a warm-weather calendar: Clearwater Campground is open April 15 to October 15, with a 35-acre lake for fishing and swimming, 30- and 50-amp electrical service and full hookups on all 100 lots. Auburn Hills / Holly KOA is open from April 1 to October 31.
Late summer and early fall bring the heaviest visitation. Holly Recreation Area typically sees the highest number of visitors in August and September, coinciding with the Michigan Renaissance Festival held near the park. Weekends during that stretch book out well in advance, and holiday weekends fill first.
Winter camping is possible at some state sites, but water systems close and most amenities shut down. Shoulder-season trips in May and October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds and reliable trail conditions, though rain gear is essential in spring, when May is the wettest month with rain on more than 17 days on average.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book a site
State-run campgrounds use a single centralized system. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). This covers Holly Recreation Area and Highland Recreation Area. The Recreation Passport is required for vehicle access to state parks and recreation areas, state-managed boating access sites, state forest campgrounds and thousands of miles of trails, all year long.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Auburn Hills / Holly KOA takes reservations through KOA channels, and Clearwater Campground takes reservations by phone. For summer weekends, book several weeks ahead; for holiday weekends, aim for two months or more.
What to expect on site
Site styles vary widely across the Holly area. State recreation areas range from rustic to modern, with a mix of electric sites, vault or modern restrooms and lake access. Highland Recreation Area operates a 25-site rustic campground shared by equestrian and non-equestrian campers, with picket poles, fire rings and picnic tables at each site, potable water from a pump at the entrance, vault toilets, and two accessible sites (20 and 21) featuring concrete pads.
Private parks are built around family amenities. Auburn Hills / Holly KOA has 146 RV-friendly sites ranging from full hookup to electric only, with pull-throughs suitable for RVs up to 85 feet, plus Wi-Fi, mini-golf, a swimming pool, cable TV, a snack bar, skate park, outdoor bowling, laundry facilities and a dump station.
Quiet hours and campfire rules are enforced at state sites, and campfires are permitted in designated fire rings only. Bring firewood certified for Michigan, since transporting untreated wood across the state is discouraged.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Holly, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Holly, MI?
RV rental in Holly is one of Michigan's better-value getaways, with most travel trailers booking between $90 and $160 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches running $250 to $400. Because Holly sits between Pontiac and Flint and pulls in Detroit weekend traffic, the smartest savings come from booking Sunday through Thursday or targeting shoulder months like May and September, when daytime highs still reach the comfortable 60s and 70s. Use the price slider on RVezy to find cheap RV rental Holly options, and watch for owner-discounted weekly rates. Many Holly hosts also drop nightly rates by 10 to 20 percent for stays of five nights or longer, so extending your trip can actually cost less per day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Holly%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Holly, Michigan?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Holly, even for larger Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every rig on the RVezy platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the booking process, so there is no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home-country license works for most hosts. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is to get behind the wheel of a motorhome rental in Holly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection or coverage comes with my RVezy booking in Holly?
Every RV rental in Holly booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you peace of mind whether you are navigating I-75 north toward Flint or backing into a wooded site at McGinnis Lake Campground. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the package that fits your comfort level and budget. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers built specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals, removing one of the biggest worries for first-time renters. Book with confidence and focus on the fun stuff, like roasting marshmallows at Holly State Recreation Area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Holly RV rental?
Cancellation on RVezy is designed to feel low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room to confirm dates, weather forecasts, and trip plans. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel and whether unusual circumstances such as severe weather affect your trip. Michigan weather can shift quickly, especially around spring thaw and late-season snowstorms, and RVezy's customer support team is available to help if your situation changes. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy will help you find a replacement RV or issue a refund. Review the full cancellation details on RVezy before you confirm your Holly RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Holly?
Absolutely. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Holly listings welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see hosts who actively welcome four-legged guests. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly shown on the listing before you book. Once you arrive, Holly State Recreation Area allows leashed pets throughout most trails and campground loops, and the Wilderness Trail loop around McGinnis Lake is a favorite for dog owners. Groveland Oaks County Park just north of town is also dog-friendly, with shaded trails and open green space for stretching legs after a drive. Pack a long leash, plenty of water, and waste bags, and your pup is set for a great Michigan adventure.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/hollyCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Holly?
Yes, RV delivery in Holly is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed a trailer before. Many Holly-area hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at McGinnis Lake Campground inside Holly State Recreation Area or at Groveland Oaks County Park, so you can fly into Detroit Metro (DTW), grab a rideshare, and arrive to a fully ready home on wheels. Just filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and what their delivery radius covers. Delivery fees vary by distance, but many hosts within about 30 miles of Holly charge a flat rate that is well worth it for first-time renters. The host will level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Holly%2C%20MichiganHow far can I travel on a Holly RV trip, and is there unlimited mileage?
Holly is a fantastic launch point for a Michigan road trip because so many bucket-list destinations are within an easy day's drive. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sits about 240 miles northwest, Mackinaw City is roughly 260 miles north, Traverse City is around 220 miles, and Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula is about 330 miles away. Mileage policies are set by each host, but you will find plenty of RV rental with unlimited mileage options on RVezy, plus daily mileage packages (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day) that can be upgraded at booking. Check the mileage details on every listing before you book. If you are planning a big loop up to the Mitten's tip, look for hosts who offer unlimited miles to keep your fuel-stop flexibility wide open.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Holly%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Holly to park my RV?
Holly punches well above its weight when it comes to camping. The best campgrounds near Holly include McGinnis Lake Modern Campground inside Holly State Recreation Area (modern sites with electric service, hot showers, and access to multiple lakes), Groveland Oaks County Park about 10 minutes north (full hookups, a sandy beach, and family water activities), Seven Lakes State Park in nearby Fenton (electric sites on Sand Lake), and Pontiac Lake Recreation Area to the south for another great state-park option. All sit within a short drive of downtown Holly, making it easy to bounce between parks if one is booked. Reserve Michigan state park sites at midnrreservations.com up to six months in advance.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/hollyWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Holly?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Holly is mid-May through mid-October, when daytime highs typically sit between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and the lakes inside Holly State Recreation Area are warm enough for swimming. July and August are peak season with highs in the low 80s, late September into early October brings beautiful fall color across the rolling Oakland County woodlands, and shoulder months like May and September offer lower nightly rates and quieter campgrounds. Winter camping is possible at select sites, but expect lows in the teens and 20s and bring a four-season rig. For first-time renters, late June and early September hit a great balance of warm weather, open availability, and competitive pricing.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. How will I know how to use everything?
First time renting an RV in Holly? You are in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, awning, propane, water system, and dump valves, so you never leave wondering which button does what. Many hosts also send a video guide before your trip and stay reachable by text throughout your stay. If you are nervous about towing a trailer through Oakland County's rolling backroads or merging onto I-75, consider booking a Class C motorhome (drives like an oversized van) or choosing a host who offers delivery and setup right at your campsite. Pair that with included 24/7 roadside assistance and RVezy's support team, and your first trip will feel surprisingly easy.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Holly trip?
You are never on your own. Every Holly RV rental on RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are stuck with a flat on I-75 outside Grand Blanc or dealing with a dead battery at McGinnis Lake Campground. Roadside assistance covers services like tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service provider. Your host is also a great first text for quick mechanical questions, since they know their rig best. For non-emergency questions, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Holly and head north with confidence.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trip routes from Holly, Michigan?
An RV road trip from Holly opens up some of the Midwest's most scenic drives. Head north on I-75 to Mackinaw City (about 4.5 hours, 260 miles) and explore Mackinac Island by ferry, or detour west to Ludington State Park (about 3 hours) for Lake Michigan dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore via US-31 is roughly 240 miles northwest and worth every mile. Closer to home, the Thumb Coast along M-25 makes a relaxed 2-day loop through Port Austin and Caseville. Cross-border travel to Canada is allowed by some hosts (Mexico is not permitted under RVezy protection), so message your host directly if you are eyeing Niagara Falls via the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, about 75 miles east.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhat's the fuel budget for an RV trip out of Holly?
Budgeting fuel for your Holly RV trip is easier when you know what to expect. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A coaches typically run 6 to 9 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, but expect a 20 to 30 percent drop in MPG while towing. Michigan gas prices generally track close to the national average, with stations along I-75 in Holly, Grand Blanc, and Clarkston usually offering competitive prices. For a 3-day local trip averaging 150 miles, expect to budget roughly $60 to $120 in fuel for most motorhomes. Fill up in the Holly area before heading north on I-75, where prices can climb the further you get from the metro area.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Holly?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. Michigan state park campgrounds, including McGinnis Lake at Holly State Recreation Area and Seven Lakes State Park, open reservations six months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system at midnrreservations.com, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill within hours of opening. Groveland Oaks County Park, run by Oakland County Parks, takes reservations through its own system and books fast for July and August. If your dates are sold out, set cancellation alerts and check back often, then lock in your RV rental in Holly on RVezy as soon as your site is confirmed.
midnrreservations.com/What are the driving conditions like around Holly?
Driving an RV in and out of Holly is refreshingly manageable. I-75 runs right past town with wide lanes and easy on-ramps, and the gently rolling terrain of Oakland County means moderate hills rather than steep mountain grades. Within Holly, Grange Hall Road, Dixie Highway, and the main routes to the state recreation area are all RV-friendly and lead directly to the major campgrounds. Watch for occasional low-clearance railroad bridges in downtown Holly's historic district, so always confirm your rig's height before you head through. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so if you are booking a cold-weather trip, choose a host with appropriate tires and ask about heated holding tanks. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the forecast before any long drive.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities can I expect at Holly area campgrounds?
Holly-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. McGinnis Lake Modern Campground inside Holly State Recreation Area offers electric sites, drinking water hydrants throughout the loops, modern restrooms with hot showers, and a sanitation dump station near the campground entrance. Groveland Oaks County Park offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at many sites, and dump stations are available at the major area parks. Water fill-up is available at every modern campground, and most have on-site camp stores for ice, firewood, and forgotten essentials. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for state park entry (a small annual fee for residents or a daily fee for out-of-state visitors), and it covers your park access throughout the trip.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat's included inside the RV when I rent in Holly?
Holly RV rentals come ready for camping right out of the gate. Most listings include sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware, dishes, and utensils), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both air conditioning and furnace heat, and seatbelts for safe family travel. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and basic outdoor gear like camp chairs and a folding table. Generator-equipped rigs are great for boondocking or running AC at non-electric sites. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes available as an add-on. Check each listing's amenities list before booking, and message the host if there is a must-have item (like a coffee maker or kids' bedding) you want confirmed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Holly%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Holly hosts offer some great add-ons that can take your trip from good to great. Popular extras include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generator use, bike racks, kayak or paddleboard rentals (perfect for the lakes inside Holly State Recreation Area), outdoor grills, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or around Holly, Fenton, Grand Blanc, or Clarkston, but delivery to McGinnis Lake Campground or Groveland Oaks is a popular choice that removes the towing learning curve. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily allowances usually between 100 and 150 free miles plus options to prepay extra miles at a discount. Review every detail on the listing page, and message the host before booking if you want a custom add-on bundle.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Holly%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Holly RV rental is simple and secure: you pay directly through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, so there is no cash handoff or off-platform transactions. A refundable security deposit (amount set by the host and clearly shown on the listing) is pre-authorized on your card before your trip and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The exact deposit amount and timing are shown on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos and videos, follow the host's instructions for the dump station and propane, and return the rig clean with the fuel topped off as agreed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Holly RV rental on a winter trip?
Winter RV camping out of Holly is possible and increasingly popular. Holly State Recreation Area offers thousands of acres that become a snowy playground for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on designated routes. The nearby Mt. Holly ski area adds a downhill option just minutes from town. For a winter RV trip, filter for four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a strong furnace, and confirm with the host that the RV is winterized for use (not storage). Expect January lows in the teens, so book a campsite with electric hookups to keep the heat running comfortably. Check campground availability in advance, since some loops close seasonally, and you will enjoy the Mitten at its quietest.
