Campgrounds near Huntington Woods
Huntington Woods sits in southern Oakland County, just north of Detroit, and puts RV travelers within a short drive of a cluster of Michigan Department of Natural Resources recreation areas. Most nearby camping is state-run: Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area covers 3,745 acres and offers camping, trails, a fishing pier, paddlesports and amenities for horseback riding, while Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres, sits on the Huron River and borders Proud Lake, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites, fishing and paddling and an extensive trail system.
Further west, Highland Recreation Area anchors a 5,900-acre park of forest, marshes and kettle lakes and includes a 25-site rustic campground. For private full-hookup options, Wildwood Golf and RV Resort and Windsor Campground Inc lie across the border in Ontario, close to the Detroit crossing.
Note that the modern campground and A-frame cabin at Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area are closed for the remainder of the 2026 season due to sanitation station and solar construction. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open during this work.
Things to do around Huntington Woods
Water and trails drive most trips from these campgrounds. Proud Lake Recreation Area gives paddlers access to the Huron River, and fishing draws anglers to the Huron River and Proud Lake, with the park's section of the river managed as a Type I trout stream. Proud Lake sits in a chain of smaller lakes linked by shallow river sections, making it well suited to kayaking through the bends and turns of the Huron River.
Mountain bikers head to Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, where designated trails throughout the recreation area are available for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking. At Highland Recreation Area, the rustic campground provides direct access to the park's 44-mile trail system via the Cedar Creek Trail, with routes open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers, plus the Haven Hill Natural Area with remnants of the Edsel Ford family estate.

Southeast Michigan has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and winters are cold, with moderate precipitation spread fairly evenly through the year. Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when state park sites at Proud Lake and Highland fill quickly on weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter but still active. Proud Lake's trout stream draws anglers in spring, and fall brings hardwood color through the Haven Hill Natural Area at Highland. Paddlesport rentals at Proud Lake typically run Memorial Day through Labor Day, with the swim area, boat ramp and canoe and kayak rentals available to registered campers during that window.
Winter camping is possible at the rustic loops. The modern campground at Proud Lake is managed year-round, though snow, freezing overnight lows and reduced services should be expected from December through March. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area's modern loop is not an option this season due to construction.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

Reservations for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters can be made at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). Proud Lake's modern campground is open year-round and reservations are available up to six months in advance, and the same six-month window applies to Highland Recreation Area.

Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m. Private parks such as Wildwood Golf and RV Resort and Windsor Campground Inc are booked directly through the operator.
What to expect at Huntington Woods campgrounds
State recreation area campgrounds around Huntington Woods lean modern but simple. At Proud Lake, the modern campground sits on the shores of Proud Lake and features 130 sites arranged on two loops, with some sites offering lake views and others set against the woods. Sites have 30- or 50-amp electrical service and access to a sanitation station with three lanes, plus fire rings and picnic tables. A buoyed swim area sits within the campground.
Highland's campground is more primitive. The 25-site rustic and equestrian loop welcomes both equestrian and nonequestrian campers, with each site equipped with a picket pole for horses, a fire ring and a picnic table. Potable water comes from a pump at the campground entrance, and vault toilets serve the facility. Sites 20 and 21 have concrete pads for accessible camping.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%20Woods%2C%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Huntington Woods?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Huntington Woods for almost every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Michigan does not require a special license, CDL, or endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and virtually all travel trailers and fifth wheels listed on the platform. You'll just need to be 25 or older, upload a clear photo of your license, and complete RVezy's quick ID verification during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home auto club before you fly. Most first-time renters in metro Detroit are surprised how simple the process really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Huntington Woods RV rental?
Every RV rental in Huntington Woods, MI booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit Woodward Avenue or I-696 with real peace of mind. During checkout, you'll choose from multiple protection plan tiers that cover most physical damage to the RV, giving you the level of financial coverage that fits your trip. Guests, not hosts, select the protection level, so you stay in control. Combined with vetted hosts, secure messaging, and a verified payment system, your motorhome rental in Huntington Woods is set up to be low-stress from day one. Pro tip: pick your protection tier based on trip length and how far you're driving, longer Up North trips often warrant the higher tier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Huntington Woods RV rental?
Booking is lower-risk than you think: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts, so you get consistent, transparent rules across all listings in Huntington Woods. There's a grace-period window after booking where you can cancel for a full refund, and additional refund tiers apply depending on how many days before your trip you cancel. Special circumstances like natural disasters or major weather events along your route are also considered. If your plans shift, the easiest path is to message your host first to discuss date changes, then contact RVezy support to process the cancellation. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dream rig, then finalize trip details as your dates firm up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Huntington Woods RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Huntington Woods is easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page. Many Oakland County hosts welcome dogs and even leave bowls, blankets, or lint rollers for shedding season. Michigan state parks and recreation areas, including nearby Proud Lake and Highland Recreation Area, welcome leashed dogs at campgrounds and on most trails (just not designated swim beaches). Closer to home, the Detroit Zoo does not allow pets, but Huntington Woods' Burton Park and Royal Oak's off-leash dog area are perfect for pre-trip energy burns. Pro tip: message the host to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes before you book, then ask about a quick walkthrough of where pets should sleep.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/petsCan the RV be delivered to me in Huntington Woods?
Yes, RV delivery in Huntington Woods is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down Woodward Avenue. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a friend's home in the Detroit metro, or straight to your campsite at Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake, or the Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA in Ypsilanti. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, expect a flat fee for local delivery within 25 miles and a per-mile rate beyond that. The host will set up the RV, level it, connect hookups, and give you a full walkthrough. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message two or three hosts to compare delivery fees to your exact campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106514-Delivery-optionsHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Huntington Woods RV trip?
Plenty far: hosts set their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for road trippers. From Huntington Woods, you can easily reach Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 240 miles northwest), Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge (around 280 miles north), Traverse City wine country (about 230 miles), Pictured Rocks in the Upper Peninsula (roughly 430 miles), or cross into Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline in under two hours. Each extra mile beyond the included allowance is typically $0.30 to $0.50. Pro tip: map your full route before booking and ask the host to bundle a higher mileage package, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage at the end.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhere can I camp near Huntington Woods, MI?
You're spoiled for choice: the best campgrounds near Huntington Woods are all within an hour's drive in Oakland County's recreation-area belt. Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (about 30 miles west) offers modern sites on the Huron River with electric hookups and a sanitation station. Highland Recreation Area sits just beyond it with quiet, wooded sites. Holly Recreation Area (about 40 miles north) offers rolling hills and lake swimming. For full hookups and resort-style amenities, the Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti is roughly 45 minutes south. Pontiac Lake Recreation Area is another nearby option with modern campsites and lake access. Pro tip: a Michigan Recreation Passport is required for state park entry, you can add it to your vehicle registration or buy it at the gate.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Huntington Woods?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Huntington Woods and across southeast Michigan. June and July bring warm 75 to 85 degree days perfect for Lake Huron and Lake Michigan beach trips, while September and early October deliver crisp air, smaller crowds, and spectacular fall color along M-22 and the Tunnel of Trees. Spring (April to May) is quieter and cheaper but expect cool nights in the 40s. Winters bring snow and sub-freezing temps from December through March, several hosts offer winter-ready RVs with heated tanks if you're up for a snowy adventure. Pro tip: book Labor Day weekend at least four months out, the combination of Detroit-area campers and the Woodward Dream Cruise aftermath makes state-park sites disappear fast.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay?
You're going to do great: first time renting an RV is something RVezy hosts handle every single day, and Huntington Woods area hosts are known for patient, thorough walkthroughs. At pickup, your host will spend 30 to 60 minutes showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water systems, propane, generator, awning, and dump procedure. You'll leave with their cell number, a written cheat sheet, and often a video walkthrough you can replay at the campground. RVezy's 24/7 support is also a tap away if anything feels off. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first trip, book a one-night shakedown at Proud Lake just 30 miles away, then graduate to a longer Up North trip with total confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003042453-RentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RV rental in Huntington Woods booked through RVezy, no matter how far you've driven. If you get a flat on I-75 heading north, run into battery trouble at Pontiac Lake, or have a mechanical issue near the Mackinac Bridge, one phone call dispatches help. The service covers towing, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a quick text or call away for RV-specific questions like resetting the inverter or troubleshooting the fridge. Pro tip: save both the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap photos of the RV's exterior at pickup so any pre-existing scuffs are documented.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my RV across the border into Canada from Huntington Woods?
Often yes: Huntington Woods sits just 20 minutes from the Detroit-Windsor border crossing, and many RVezy hosts allow trips into Ontario for destinations like Point Pelee National Park, Niagara Falls (about 4 hours east), or Toronto (4.5 hours). Cross-border travel depends on the host's insurance and must be approved in writing before you book, so message them directly with your full itinerary. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. You'll need a valid passport (or enhanced license), and pets need up-to-date rabies certificates. Pro tip: ask your host to confirm cross-border coverage in the booking message thread so you have written approval, and use the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron if you want a less congested crossing than the Ambassador Bridge.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Huntington Woods RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, so plan smart. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches 6 to 9 mpg, and Class B campervans and travel trailers (with a capable tow vehicle) 12 to 18 mpg. Michigan gas prices typically run close to the national average, with stations along Woodward, 11 Mile, and I-696 offering convenient fill-ups before you leave Huntington Woods. A round trip to Traverse City (about 460 miles) in a Class C burns roughly $150 to $200 in fuel; a weekend at Proud Lake just down the road might cost $40 to $60. Pro tip: download GasBuddy and fuel up in Auburn Hills or Flint on the way north, prices there are often 10 to 20 cents cheaper than inside the metro Detroit core.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground for my Huntington Woods RV trip?
For Michigan state park campgrounds, book the moment your six-month window opens: the DNR releases reservations exactly six months in advance through MiDNRReservations.com. Holiday weekends at Proud Lake, Highland, and Holly Recreation Areas sell out quickly. Private parks like the Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA give you a bit more flexibility but still fill up June through August. For a spontaneous weekend, state forest campgrounds are mostly first-come, first-served and offer rustic backup options. Pro tip: create your MiDNRReservations.com account and save your payment info ahead of time, then set a phone alarm for the morning of your six-month-to-the-day date to grab your favorite site.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Huntington Woods?
Driving an RV around Huntington Woods is very manageable once you know the local quirks. The village sits right at the I-696 and Woodward Avenue interchange, so you have fast highway access in every direction, but watch for low railroad overpasses on side streets, most rentals clear standard 13'6" clearances, but always confirm your RV's exact height with your host. Detroit-area rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. on I-696, I-75, and the Lodge) are best avoided. Winters bring snow and salt-covered roads from December through March. Pro tip: leave Huntington Woods around 10 a.m. on a Friday to clear the metro before northbound I-75 cottage traffic stacks up at Clarkston.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Huntington Woods?
Campgrounds near Huntington Woods strike a great balance between modern comfort and outdoor charm. Modern state-park sites at Proud Lake and Highland include 30- or 50-amp electric service, a paved or gravel pad, picnic table, fire ring, flush-toilet bathhouses with hot showers, and a sanitation/dump station with potable water for filling fresh tanks. Most don't have individual water or sewer hookups at the site, you'll dump on the way out. Private resorts like the Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a four-way water key, and a 30-to-50-amp adapter, your host likely includes them, but having backups means you're never caught short at hookup time.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Huntington Woods?
More than you'd think: most motorhome rental Huntington Woods listings come fully equipped so you can show up with clothes and groceries and be ready to roll. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeps 4 to 8 depending on size), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof A/C, furnace, propane, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, an awning, and a generator for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons and message the host about specifics like an outdoor kitchen or solar setup, which are great for family RV trip Huntington Woods adventures.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%20Woods%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Huntington Woods area offer some genuinely useful add-ons that elevate any RV road trip from Huntington Woods. Common options include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50), camping chair and table kits, outdoor grills, kayaks or bikes, generator hours for boondocking, propane refills, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's driveway in Oakland County, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough on arrival and a quick condition check at return. If you'd rather skip driving, filter by Delivery to have the RV brought to your campsite. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.50 per mile after. Pro tip: ask about a late return window, many hosts will give you a free extra hour or two if you ask politely in advance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Huntington%20Woods%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and your funds are protected until your trip starts. Your host never sees your card details. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged unless there's damage, excess mileage, or a late return at trip's end. Once your host confirms everything is in order, the hold is released and disappears from your statement within a few business days. Pro tip: do a video walkaround of the RV at pickup and dropoff (inside and out, including the holding tanks and generator hours), this 5-minute habit prevents most deposit disputes and keeps your Huntington Woods RV rental experience smooth from start to finish.
