Camping near Imlay City, Michigan

Imlay City sits in Lapeer County in Michigan's Thumb region, roughly an hour north of Detroit along I-69. It works as a practical base for RV travellers heading to inland lakes, state recreation areas, and the surrounding farm country of the northern Lower Peninsula. Most campgrounds within a short drive combine wooded sites with lake access, and reservations run through either the Michigan DNR system or private booking channels. Closest to town, Attica Pines Campground and Hilltop Campgrounds serve travellers who want a straightforward RV stay near I-69. Emmett KOA Holiday sits east toward the Blue Water Bridge corridor, and Washakie Campground and Golf pairs sites with an on-property course. For a state-park experience, Metamora-Hadley Recreation Area lies a short drive south. The 723-acre park is located 8 miles south of Lapeer and surrounds Lake Minnawanna, with a modern campground, overnight lodging, a designated swim area, a fishing pier, picnic areas, and 6 miles of trails.

Things to do around Imlay City

Water activities anchor most trips. At Metamora-Hadley, a designated swim beach with accessible walkway, universally accessible fishing pier, and no-wake boating access provide water-based recreation on Lake Minnawanna, where anglers target bluegill, largemouth bass, and pike. Food concessions and rentals for row boats, kayaks, paddle boards, paddle boats, and canoes are available in season. On land, families can hike or bike park trails, visit the Seven Ponds Nature Center just east of Metamora, or day-trip to Frankenmuth and Crossroads Village. Washakie Campground and Golf offers on-site golf, and the villages of Metamora and Romeo add small-town food stops and cider mills in fall. Winter visitors will find quieter trails: the six miles of park trails convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes.

The main RV season runs from spring through mid-fall. Metamora-Hadley typically operates from April through October, and reservations for the next season can be made up to 12 months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system. Private parks in the area generally follow a similar window, with some opening slightly earlier in April and closing later in the fall. Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest stretch. The campground can reach full capacity, especially during peak summer periods and particularly on holiday weekends. Book Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends well in advance. Weekday arrivals in June and September are the easiest to secure. October draws a second wave of campers for fall colour and family events. Metamora-Hadley hosts a Fall Harvest Festival with seasonal activities including pumpkin decorating, crafts, games, a costume parade, and campsite decorating. Winter camping is limited; most private parks close, and state recreation areas shift primarily to day use.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book a campsite

State-park sites near Imlay City are booked through the Michigan DNR reservation system, with reservations available up to 12 months in advance. Sites at Metamora-Hadley are released on a rolling window, so booking the same date next year on the morning it opens is the best way to secure lakeside spots. Private parks, including Attica Pines Campground, Emmett KOA Holiday, Washakie Campground and Golf, and Hilltop Campgrounds, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. KOA properties also accept bookings through the KOA app. One extra requirement applies to state land. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. Michigan residents can add it at license-plate renewal; non-residents purchase a daily or annual pass at the gate.

What to expect on arrival

Sites in this area are a mix of gravel, dirt, and grass pads. Expect electric hookups at most modern loops, with water and sewer more common at private parks than at state parks. Metamora-Hadley features 214 modern sites with electric hookups distributed across two loops; the north loop offers larger, more open sites suited to bigger RVs and travel trailers, while the south loop provides a wooded setting with more shade and privacy. Amenities are family-oriented. The camp store at the entrance offers firewood, ice, propane, camp supplies, pizza, ice cream, and equipment rentals, and the beach house in the day-use area includes modern restrooms, showers, changing areas, and concessions. One rule to note for state land: alcohol may not be possessed or consumed in the park from April 1 through Labor Day unless the park manager has granted written authorization through an event permit.
