Keego Harbor sits in Oakland County, Michigan, surrounded by a cluster of state recreation areas that put RV travelers within a short drive of lakes, trails, and modern campgrounds. The area is anchored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources' Highland, Pontiac Lake, and Proud Lake units, plus private RV resorts serving Metro Detroit weekenders. Just west of town, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area covers 3,745 acres of marshes, forests, and old farm fields, and features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile. Proud Lake Recreation Area, about 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, spans roughly 3,000 acres along the Huron River with a 130-site modern campground. Highland Recreation Area adds 5,900 acres of rolling hills, more than ten inland lakes, and 44 miles of trails. For RV travelers wanting full hookups, Clearwater Campground in Ortonville and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson offer private-park amenities within an easy drive of Keego Harbor.

Things to do near Keego Harbor

Water dominates the itinerary. Pontiac Lake offers a boat launch, a half-mile beach, and two accessible fishing piers in the day-use area. Proud Lake Recreation Area sits on the Huron River, managed as a Type I trout stream and stocked with trout each year, with canoes and kayaks available to rent from Memorial Day through Labor Day. On land, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area holds an 11-mile mountain bike trail ranked among the country's Top 100 and considered one of the most technical in southeast Michigan. Highland Recreation Area contributes 44 miles of hiker, biker, and equestrian trails, plus the Haven Hill Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark. Families staying at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley or Clearwater Campground get beaches, swimming, and playgrounds on site.

Highland's rustic and equestrian campground is also open year-round for hardier campers. Summer weekends fill fast at the state recreation areas, and holiday weekends often sell out months ahead. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and color through the oak-hickory and beech-maple stands at Highland and Proud Lake. Late April into early May is best for wildflowers and warblers in Haven Hill. One important note for planning: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area's modern campground, including the A-frame, is closed for the 2026 season for planned updates to the sanitation station, with an anticipated reopening on September 1, 2026. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground, and group camp remain open.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

Booking and reservations

State-park sites at Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake, and Highland are booked through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS. Campsites can be reserved up to six months in advance, and Oakland County favorites fill quickly for summer weekends. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to all state parks and recreation areas. Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley takes reservations through its website and does not permit tent camping, offering only water-and-electric or full-hookup RV sites. Clearwater Campground handles reservations directly with the operator. Check-in at Michigan state park campgrounds starts at 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. checkout, and two vehicles are allowed per site.

What to expect at the campgrounds

Sites at the state recreation areas are generally wooded and spacious, with electric hookups but no water or sewer at individual pads; modern restrooms, showers, and a sanitation station serve the modern loops. Proud Lake offers 30- and 50-amp electric with grass or cement pads, and the campground sits on a hillside, so bring leveling blocks. Pontiac Lake's terrain includes noticeable elevation changes across two loops. Highland's rustic and equestrian campground has 25 sites with vault toilets and a water pump, no modern restrooms, and can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley has gravel pads that fit rigs up to 45 feet, four lakes with beaches, and a large seasonal population.
