Campgrounds near Laingsburg
Laingsburg sits in Shiawassee County in mid-Michigan, within easy reach of Lansing, Flint, and Owosso. The area's anchor campground is Sleepy Hollow State Park, located off US-127 nine miles southeast of St. Johns and four miles northwest of Laingsburg, centered on man-made, 410-acre Lake Ovid. The park offers a year-round opportunity for recreation with 181 modern campsites across a modern campground divided into a north loop and a south loop.
Beyond the state park, RVers have several private options within a short drive. Campgrounds-R-Us serves travelers passing through the corridor, while Lansing Cottonwood Campground sits closer to the city for those who want urban amenities nearby. Walnut Hills Family Campground caters to families with extensive on-site recreation, and the Saginaw County Fairgrounds offers basic event-tied camping to the north. Together these properties cover the spectrum from full-hookup private resorts to modern state-park loops.
Things to do near Laingsburg
Lake Ovid is the recreational centerpiece. The lake was created by damming the Little Maple River and supports fishing, paddling, and a swim beach. The park is home to a modern campground, two cabins, a swim beach, a boating access site, a kayak launch, four fishing piers, and miles of trails. Trails take visitors through prairie grasses, hardwood forest, and stands of pine: 16 miles of hiking and biking, and 6.5 miles for horseback riding and dog sledding, plus a metal-detecting area. An 18-hole disc golf course is in the day-use area on Lake Ovid, with discs available for purchase at the campground office in summer, and the course is open year-round. Lake Ovid is a no-wake lake, which keeps paddling calm. Lansing itself adds museums, Michigan State University, and family attractions within a half-hour drive.

Mid-Michigan has a four-season climate with a clearly defined camping window. Most private campgrounds in the area operate from late spring through October. Lansing Cottonwood Campground is open May 1 to November 1 each year, which is typical for private parks in this region. State-park sites at Sleepy Hollow remain available later in the shoulder, though winter use shifts mainly to day visitors.
Summer is peak season. June through August bring warm days, the busiest weekends, and the highest demand for waterfront sites at Lake Ovid. Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends typically sell out as soon as the rolling booking window opens. Spring opens slowly, with cool nights and wet ground through April; fall delivers reliable color from late September into mid-October and quieter weekday sites. Winter adventures shift to ice fishing on Lake Ovid, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing on the trails.

We had a great weekend! Pickup and drop off were easy to coordinate and the unit was so light to tow with our Subaru outback. The camper came well equipped and was perfect for off-grid camping.

How to book near Laingsburg
Sleepy Hollow State Park reservations run through the Michigan DNR. Campsites, overnight lodging, and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance, with shelters up to 12 months in advance, handled at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Each day another day six months out becomes available for booking, and popular locations and dates can be booked within minutes of becoming available, so set a reminder for the rolling window if a summer weekend is the goal. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds, and state trail parking lots.
Private campgrounds book directly. Lansing Cottonwood and Walnut Hills Family Campground take reservations through their own websites or by phone. For peak summer weekends, book private resorts two to three months ahead.
What to expect at Laingsburg campgrounds

Private parks lean more amenity-heavy. Lansing Cottonwood has 135 sites for any size rig, from 40-foot Class A motorhomes to weekend travel trailers, ranging from 50-amp full hookups to Premium Lakeside, 30-amp water and electric sites, and rustic hookups, plus an outdoor pool and fishing ponds. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Laingsburg RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every trip, not individual hosts, and the policy is consistent across all listings. That means if your plans for a Laingsburg RV trip shift, whether life happens or a Michigan snowstorm rolls in, you have a clear, predictable process to follow. Refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is, and major events like natural disasters are factored in. You can review the full policy on the RVezy website or reach out to support any time. Book early to lock in the best rigs around Sleepy Hollow with confidence.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Laingsburg is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs. Many even provide bowls and outdoor mats. Once you are booked, your pup will love Sleepy Hollow State Park, which allows leashed dogs on its hiking trails and at a designated pet swim area on Lake Ovid. The nearby Rose Lake State Wildlife Area is another favorite for quieter dog walks. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (commonly $25 to $75 per trip) and share your dog's size so they can recommend the right rig.

Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Sleepy Hollow State Park (about 6 miles from downtown Laingsburg), set it up on your site, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. You skip the towing stress entirely and treat the RV like a cabin on wheels. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, with typical delivery fees ranging from $2 to $4 per mile. midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Laingsburg?
Laingsburg shines from late May through early October, when daytime highs typically sit in the 70s to mid-80s F and Lake Ovid warms up nicely for swimming and kayaking. July and August are peak season with the longest days and full campground programming, while September delivers fewer bugs, lower rates, and early hints of Michigan's famous fall color. October brings beautiful leaf-peeping along the Looking Glass River. Winter (December to February) is cold, but Sleepy Hollow stays open year-round with snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails. Book a late-September Laingsburg RV trip for warm days, cool nights, and lower nightly rates.
weather.gov/grr/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay?
You are going to do great, especially because Laingsburg is one of the easiest places in Michigan to learn. Rural roads around town are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, hookups, propane, slide-outs, and the dump procedure. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery to Sleepy Hollow State Park. Do a short test drive in the host's neighborhood before heading out: it builds instant confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003693673-RentersWhat happens if my RV breaks down during the trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat near Sleepy Hollow, a dead battery at Lake Ovid, or run into engine trouble on I-69, help is one call away. Service partners can reach Laingsburg quickly from Lansing (about 20 minutes south) or Owosso (about 15 minutes east). For mechanical questions, your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app, since they know their rig inside and out. Snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call for service.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Laingsburg?
Laingsburg is a fantastic launchpad for a Michigan RV road trip, sitting just off I-69 with quick access north and west. Top routes include Sleepy Hollow State Park (6 miles, 15 minutes) for a quick overnight; Frankenmuth and the Bavarian Inn (about 55 miles, 1 hour); Traverse City wine country and Sleeping Bear Dunes (about 175 miles, 3 hours); Mackinaw City and the Upper Peninsula gateway (about 215 miles, 3.5 hours); and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (about 385 miles, 6 hours). Cross-border travel into Canada is possible with some hosts (message to confirm insurance coverage), but Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A 5-day loop from Laingsburg to Traverse City to Mackinaw and back hits Michigan's greatest hits perfectly.
michigan.org/road-tripsWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs come in around 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer typically lands at 10 to 14 MPG. Gas prices in the Laingsburg area track close to Michigan's statewide average. A round trip to Traverse City and back (about 350 miles) in a Class C will cost roughly $100 to $140 in fuel at typical prices. Fill up in Laingsburg or Bath before heading north, since prices often climb once you pass Clare on US-127.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=MIHow far in advance should I book a campground?
For the best campgrounds near Laingsburg, the earlier the better. Sleepy Hollow State Park accepts reservations up to six months ahead through the Michigan DNR's reservation system at midnrreservations.com, and weekend sites for July and August often fill the day the booking window opens. For a less stressful trip, aim to lock in summer weekends by February or March. Midweek stays and shoulder-season trips in May, September, and October are often bookable just a week or two out. If Sleepy Hollow is full, check the DNR site regularly: cancellations open up often, and you can snag a prime lakeside loop without paying a premium.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Laingsburg?
Driving an RV around Laingsburg is genuinely easy: the town sits in flat, rural mid-Michigan with wide county roads, light traffic, and no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. I-69 runs just south of town for fast east-west travel, while US-127 (about 10 miles west) takes you north toward Traverse City. Watch for the occasional gravel shoulder on rural roads and seasonal frost heaves in early spring. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so check the National Weather Service Grand Rapids forecast before long drives. Winter lake-effect snow can reduce visibility on M-21. To bypass downtown Lansing at rush hour, take I-69 to I-96 instead for a stress-free route.
weather.gov/grr/What hookups and amenities will I find at local campgrounds?
You will be well taken care of. Sleepy Hollow State Park offers modern campsites with electric hookups, potable water fills, a dump station at the campground entrance, modern restrooms with hot showers, fire pits and picnic tables at every site, and a sandy swim beach on Lake Ovid. There is no on-site camp store, so stock up at the grocery in Laingsburg (about 5 miles away) before you arrive. Most private parks in the area add full sewer hookups and Wi-Fi. Bring a 25-foot extension cord and a water pressure regulator: they make hooking up at any Michigan state park campground much smoother.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/sleepy-hollowWhat features and amenities come with a typical RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in Laingsburg includes a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, a dining or dinette area, air conditioning and furnace heat, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many rigs add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, a power awning, and a generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi varies by host, and some include a mobile hotspot. For a campervan rental in Laingsburg, expect a compact but clever layout with a convertible bed, mini-fridge, and small kitchenette. Read the listing's amenity checklist closely and message the host about linens, towels, and kitchen kits, since many include them free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laingsburg%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons can I get and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Customizing your trip is easy. Popular add-ons from Laingsburg hosts include camping chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks and SUPs (perfect for Lake Ovid), generators, propane fire pits, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Laingsburg, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Drop-off is at the same location with tanks emptied (or a dump fee paid) and fuel topped up. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited mileage, listed clearly on each listing. Ask about a generator add-on if you plan to camp at a rustic site without electric hookups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Laingsburg%2C%20MichiganHow do payment and the security deposit work?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book on RVezy, payment is processed through the platform, so no cash or checks change hands with the host. You will typically pay a portion at booking and the balance closer to your trip date. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. The deposit is separate from your booking payment. Do a thorough photo and video walkaround with your host at both pickup and return: it is the best way to ensure your deposit is released quickly with no disputes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Laingsburg during winter?
Yes, and a winter RV rental in Laingsburg can be magical. Sleepy Hollow State Park stays open year-round with plowed access and miles of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails right from the campground. Many RVezy hosts in mid-Michigan offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces: filter listings and message the host to confirm winter-ready features. Daytime temperatures from December through February typically range from the 20s to mid-30s F, so plan for shore power (electric hookups keep the furnace efficient) and bring extra propane. Ask the host for a winter prep walkthrough at pickup so you know how to manage tanks and pipe protection through any Michigan cold snap.
