Campgrounds near Lake Fenton, Michigan
Lake Fenton sits in southern Genesee County, roughly halfway between Flint and the northern Detroit suburbs. The area is a mix of inland lakes, glacial hills, and mixed hardwood forest, and it puts RV travelers within a short drive of both state-run parks and private resort campgrounds. US-23 and I-75 both pass within minutes of the lake, making arrivals from Ohio, Indiana, and the Detroit metro straightforward.
Options close to town include Auburn Hills / Holly KOA and Hide Away Park Campground for full-hookup RV sites, Holly Campground as a smaller private option, and Waldenwoods Resort and Conference Center for a larger amenity-heavy stay. For a state-park experience with modern and rustic loops, Holly Recreation Area is the anchor public campground in the region, with 144 modern sites at its McGinnis Lake Campground plus a handful of rustic sites.
Most visitors use Lake Fenton as a base for swimming, fishing, and short paddling trips, with day drives to Frankenmuth, Ann Arbor, or the Huron River corridor all within about an hour.
Things to do around Lake Fenton
Lake Fenton itself is a spring-fed all-sports lake used for boating, water skiing, tubing, and largemouth bass and panfish fishing. Public access is available on the lake, and the four lakes inside Holly Recreation Area add quieter paddling water for kayaks and canoes, with Heron Lake restricted to electric motors.
On shore, Holly Recreation Area offers about 35 miles of hiking and mountain-bike trails through rolling moraine terrain, an 18-hole disc golf course, plus a swim beach and picnic grounds on Heron Lake. Seven Lakes State Park, a short drive west, adds another beach and stocked fishing waters. Families often pair a campground stay with a day at the Auburn Hills / Holly KOA pool, a Detroit Zoo trip in Royal Oak, or a stop in downtown Fenton for its walkable dining strip along the Shiawassee River.

The Michigan state-park camping season at Holly Recreation Area typically runs from mid-April through late October at its modern loops, with 30- and 50-amp electric sites drawing the heaviest demand. Private parks in the area, including Auburn Hills / Holly KOA and Hide Away Park Campground, generally follow an April-to-October or April-to-November window, though a few offer shoulder-season stays when weather allows.
July and August are peak: sites fill fastest, lake traffic is highest, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day) book out months ahead. Late June through mid-August is the reliable warm-water window for swimming, and visitation stays high into September thanks to the nearby Michigan Renaissance Festival.
Spring brings mud, cool nights, and steady rainfall as the season warms. Summer is actually the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms driving most of the annual precipitation. Fall is quieter, with color peaking in mid-October and reduced amenities as parks wind down. Winter camping is limited; most private parks close and only select state-park loops remain open with minimal services.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near Lake Fenton
Holly Recreation Area is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Sites are booked through the MiDNRReservations system online or by phone at 1-800-44-PARKS, and a Michigan Recreation Passport is required on the vehicle for park entry. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window, so summer weekends should be locked in as early as the calendar allows.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Auburn Hills / Holly KOA uses the KOA reservation platform, while Hide Away Park Campground, Holly Campground, and Waldenwoods Resort and Conference Center take reservations through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and peak summer often require minimum-night stays, and larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should confirm site length and hookup type before booking.
What to expect on the ground
Site surfaces around Lake Fenton are typically packed gravel or grass over sandy soil, with mature oak and maple cover in the state-park loops and more open layouts at the private resorts. Expect 30-amp service as standard at most sites, with 50-amp available in the modern loops at Holly Recreation Area and at select pull-throughs at Auburn Hills / Holly KOA and Waldenwoods Resort and Conference Center.
Cell coverage on the major carriers is generally strong throughout the area given proximity to I-75 and US-23. Mosquitoes are active from late May through August, especially near wetlands in Holly Recreation Area, so screens and repellent are worth packing.
Dump stations, potable water fills, and propane are available at Auburn Hills / Holly KOA and most nearby private parks. Grocery runs are easiest in Fenton or Holly, both within about fifteen minutes of the lake.
