Campgrounds near Lakeport, Michigan
Lakeport sits on the Lake Huron shoreline in St. Clair County, about ten miles north of Port Huron. The village anchors a short stretch of coast that draws RV travelers for its beaches, ship-watching along the shipping lane into the St. Clair River, and easy access from southeast Michigan and Ontario. Lakeport State Park has two distinct units separated by the village of Lakeport, with a modern campground, playground, and buoyed swim area, and a pedestrian overpass connects the two sides.
The closest option is Lakeport State Park Campground, a Michigan DNR site directly on Lake Huron. A total of 250 sites are divided between the two campgrounds, and all sites have a picnic table, fire circle, electricity, modern toilet/shower buildings along with several pull-through sites and camp pads for ease of leveling campers.
Private options round out the area for RV travelers who want full hookups or resort amenities. Dancing Fire Glamping & RV Resort, Port Huron KOA Resort, Ruby Campground, and Saint Clair RV Resort all sit within a reasonable drive south or west of Lakeport, giving families a mix of state-park beach camping and private-park convenience.
Things to do near Lakeport
The Lake Huron shoreline is the main draw. The park features a little over a mile of rocky Lake Huron shoreline and is home to a modern campground, playground, and buoyed swim area. Rocky and sandy stretches suit swimming, beachcombing for Petoskey stones, and sunset watching, and ice fishing is popular during winter months.
A short drive south leads to Port Huron and its maritime attractions. Fort Gratiot Light Station is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan and has guided mariners between Lake Huron and the St. Clair River since the 1800s. Visitors can climb the tower, walk the Thomas Edison Riverwalk under the Blue Water Bridge, then end at Lighthouse Park or Lakeside Beach for a Lake Huron sunset. Families can add the Huron Lightship Museum and the Thomas Edison Depot Museum to the itinerary.

Summer is the peak season along this coast. Warm Lake Huron water, long days, and full campground services make June through August the busiest window, and sites at Lakeport State Park Campground book well in advance for weekends and holidays. Reserve early if a lake-view site is a priority.
Spring and fall are quieter. May and September deliver mild days, fewer bugs, and open sites midweek, though lake winds can be brisk and water temperatures stay cold into early summer. The park's day-use area is closed Labor Day through Memorial Day, so shoulder-season visitors should confirm which facilities remain available.
Winter camping is possible for prepared RVers at Lakeport State Park, with reservations available through the Michigan DNR system. Expect cold temperatures, snow, and limited services, with ice fishing as the main draw.

We had a great camping trip with Nathan’s trailer. It was set up and ready to go before we even arrived which was awesome. It was clean, organized and worked perfectly. The whole family enjoyed it.

Our experience with Veronica and her van was excellent. All agreements were perfectly respected, communication was fast and clear, and she was always flexible in responding to our needs. The van was exactly as shown and proved to be extremely reliable on our very long trip (more than 5,000 km) — not a single breakdown or problem. Highly recommended, and we would rent from Veronica and her van again anytime!
Veit G. - Sep 2025
Good folks to work with. Timely responses to inquiries and more than accommodating to last minute change request(s). Highly recommend their services to anyone interested in renting this type of transport.

How to book a campsite near Lakeport
Lakeport State Park Campground is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Reservations can be made for campsites, overnight lodging, harbors and picnic shelters at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-44-PARKS (1-800-447-2757). A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all state park and forest campgrounds. The booking window opens six months in advance of the planned stay, and popular summer weekends are typically claimed within minutes of opening.
Private parks in the area, including Dancing Fire Glamping & RV Resort, Port Huron KOA Resort, Ruby Campground, and Saint Clair RV Resort, each run their own reservation systems through their websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and July fill first.
Check-in for camping arrivals starts at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m., and quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup amperage, and pet rules with each park before arrival.
What to expect
Lakeport State Park is a modern state-park campground with electric hookups but no in-site water or sewer. All sites have a picnic table, fire circle, electricity, modern toilet/shower buildings along with several pull-through sites and camp pads for ease of leveling campers. Select sites offer lake views, and both 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups are available. Plan to fill fresh water on arrival and use the dump station on departure.
On-site supplies are limited but present. Simple Adventures, located in the north campground, sells food, souvenirs, camping supplies, park-specific clothing, ice cream, candy, firewood and more. Full grocery runs are easy in Port Huron, ten minutes south.
Michigan restricts the movement of firewood to slow the spread of invasive insects and diseases, so purchase only certified heat-treated firewood sold at the park store or nearby vendors rather than hauling wood from home.
