Camping near Lathrup Village, Michigan

Lathrup Village sits in Oakland County, roughly 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. RV travellers based here have quick highway access to a string of Michigan DNR recreation areas in the surrounding lake country, plus private parks along the I-96 corridor toward Brighton and Wixom. The closest option is Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, a 3,745-acre state park in White Lake Township. Proud Lake Recreation Area and Highland Recreation Area sit further west in the same lakes belt and offer both modern and rustic camping. For hookups and resort-style amenities, Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley is a common pick. Windsor Campground Inc rounds out the nearby options with a more traditional private-park layout. Together these five properties cover the full range Michigan RV travellers usually compare: state-run rustic and modern sites, and private campgrounds with full utilities and family programming.

Things to do around Lathrup Village

The recreation areas west of the city are built around lakes and multi-use trails. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area features the longest beach in southeast Michigan at over half a mile, a fishing pier, paddlesports access, and an extensive mountain-bike and equestrian trail network. Highland and Proud Lake add hiking, equestrian trails, and paddling on the Huron River. Guests at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley are within minutes of Kensington Metropark, with its nature center, beaches and paved bike paths. Day trips into Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Frankenmuth are all within about two hours by highway, which makes Lathrup Village a workable base for mixing outdoor days with city stops.

Michigan state park modern campgrounds typically operate from mid-April through late October, with rustic and equestrian loops sometimes opening earlier and closing later depending on conditions. Private parks in the area follow a similar shoulder-to-shoulder schedule, though a few near the Detroit metro stay open year-round for self-contained RVs. Summer is peak season. Weekends at Proud Lake and Highland book out well in advance, and holiday weekends often sell out the day the six-month window opens. September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood color across the Huron River watershed, which is the sweet spot for RV travellers who want quieter loops. Note that the modern campground and A-frame cabin at Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area are closed for the remainder of the current season due to construction on a new sanitation station and solar project, and are scheduled to reopen next season. The day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground and group camp remain open, but the sanitation station is not available to campers during the closure.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near Lathrup Village

Michigan state park sites, including Pontiac Lake, Proud Lake and Highland, are booked through the Michigan DNR reservation system at MiDNRReservations.com or by phone at 1-800-44-PARKS. Sites open on a rolling six-month window, and popular summer weekends move quickly once that window opens. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to any Michigan state park or recreation area, and it is sold as an add-on when registering a Michigan license plate or at the park gate. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books directly through the Sun Outdoors website, and Windsor Campground Inc takes reservations through its own site or by phone. For state parks, check-in for campsites begins at 3 p.m. and checkout is 1 p.m. Two vehicles are allowed per campsite, and visitors must sign out by 10 p.m.

What to expect on the ground

State recreation-area campgrounds in this part of Michigan mix modern loops with electric hookups, hot showers and flush restrooms, and rustic loops with vault toilets only. At Pontiac Lake, sites are wooded with noticeable elevation changes, most accommodate larger rigs, and each site has a fire ring, though leveling can be tricky on some pads. Cell coverage across Oakland and Livingston counties is generally reliable. Firewood must be certified heat-treated and purchased on site or from local vendors to prevent spread of invasive pests, and hauling wood from outside the region is discouraged. Black bears are not typically a concern this far south, but raccoons and mosquitoes are active from late spring through early fall. Standard food-storage habits and bug repellent are enough for most trips.
