RV camping near Livonia, Michigan
Livonia sits in western Wayne County, roughly 20 miles west of downtown Detroit and within a short drive of the chain of Oakland County recreation areas that hold most of the region's RV-friendly campgrounds. Renters typically head northwest into the Huron River corridor or south toward Ypsilanti to find sites, since Livonia itself is a suburban city without a public campground inside city limits.
The closest full-service RV option is Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley, a private park in southeast Michigan that welcomes everything from small trailers to large motorhomes. State-run options nearby include Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres on the scenic Huron River in Oakland County, about 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, with a modern campground, boating access, fishing and paddling and an extensive trail system, plus Highland Recreation Area and Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area.
For renters approaching from the south, the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti offers a private-park alternative with full hookups and cabins.
Things to do near Livonia
Water is the main draw. Proud Lake State Recreation Area offers 20 miles of hiking trails, 9 of which are open to horses and mountain bikes, along with cross-country skiing, fishing in the Huron River, canoeing and picnicking, and canoe and kayak rentals are available Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Highland Recreation Area is home to 10-plus inland lakes, a designated swim beach, picnic areas, a boating access site and 44 miles of trails open to equestrians, mountain bikers and hikers. Family-focused stops include the Detroit Zoo and downtown Detroit's museums and riverfront, all within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive of Livonia.
At private parks, onsite amenities at the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA include mini-golf, a playground, sand volleyball, horseshoes, watercraft rentals, numerous scheduled activities, and themed weekends.

Peak camping season in southeast Michigan runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with a strong shoulder in September and early October when humidity drops and fall color begins. Summer weekends at the closest state parks fill quickly, and holiday weekends often book out weeks in advance through the state reservation system.
Many state recreation areas keep at least one campground open in the colder months. The Proud Lake campground is open year-round, with reservations available through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months in advance, while Highland Recreation Area's rustic and equestrian campground also welcomes cold-weather campers. Private parks operate seasonally: the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA offers RV camping from April through November.
Winter brings snow and hard freezes; expect frozen hookups and limited services. Do Not Eat Fish and Avoid Foam advisories have been issued for sections of the Huron River and associated water bodies in Oakland, Livingston, Washtenaw and Wayne counties because high levels of PFAS may be present, which is worth noting for anyone planning to fish.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near Livonia
State parks and recreation areas are booked through the Michigan DNR system. Campsites and cabins for Michigan state parks can be booked online at midnrreservations.com, or by calling the reservation line. Book as early as the six-month window opens for summer weekends at Proud Lake, Highland and Pontiac Lake.
A park pass is required in addition to the campsite fee. A valid Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all areas of the park, including the campground, boat launches, and trailheads. Private parks like Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or booking platforms.
Check-in at Proud Lake is at 3:00 p.m. and checkout is at 1:00 p.m., which is standard across the Michigan state system.
What to expect on-site
Site style varies sharply by park. Proud Lake's sites are all back-in with either grass or cement pads and include 30- or 50-amp electrical service, fire rings and picnic tables, and while there's no water or sewer at the RV sites, the campground maintains clean restroom facilities. A sanitation station with three lanes and potable water is available for RV campers.
Highland is more primitive. Highland's Rustic and Equestrian Campground offers 25 campsites open to both equestrian and nonequestrian campers, with each site featuring a picket pole, fire ring and picnic table. Potable water is available from a pump at the campground entrance, and vault toilets serve the facility.
For full hookups, choose a private park. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley provides pull-through and back-in RV sites with hookups suitable for larger rigs, each with a picnic table and fire ring.

RV rental in Livonia, Michigan is one of the most affordable ways to explore southeast Michigan and the Great Lakes. You can expect to pay roughly $90 to $175 per night for a travel trailer or campervan, $150 to $225 for a Class C motorhome, and $225 to $400 for a Class A. Pro tip: booking 4 to 6 weeks before a Michigan summer holiday weekend gets you the best inventory and price.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Livonia,%20MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Livonia, Michigan?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Livonia, your regular driver's license is all you need. Michigan does not require a special license or CDL for motorhomes and trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the platform, so there is no extra paperwork before your trip. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. That's it, you're cleared to hit I-96 and start your Michigan adventure.

Every RV rental in Livonia booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can drive off feeling covered. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your level of coverage at checkout, not the host, so you stay in control. If you get a flat on I-275 or a battery dies near Proud Lake Recreation Area, one phone call gets help dispatched any time of day or night. That backup is exactly what makes first time renting an RV in metro Detroit so low stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Livonia RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy is built to handle that. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, you receive a full refund or travel credit. You can review the full cancellation details on RVezy.com or in your booking confirmation. The takeaway: booking your motorhome rental Livonia trip today is genuinely low risk, so you can secure that Memorial Day weekend rig before someone else does.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Livonia RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Livonia is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots, often with no extra cleaning fee for well-behaved pups. Once you are on the road, Michigan state parks like Proud Lake and Maybury require dogs on a 6-foot leash and welcome them at most campsites. Locally, Bicentennial Park and the trails at Hines Park along the Rouge River are favorite Livonia dog spots before pickup. Pro tip: message your host about pet rules and bring proof of rabies vaccination, since several campgrounds in Wayne and Oakland counties ask to see it at check-in.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/rules-regsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or house in Livonia?
Yes, RV delivery in Livonia is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV right to your driveway, campground, or event venue, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you can skip the highway driving entirely if you prefer. Common drop-off spots include Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township, Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson, and the Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park in Belleville. To find these listings, filter by Delivery on the search page and message hosts for a delivery quote based on mileage from Livonia.

Pro tip: state parks book up to 6 months out through MiDNRReservations.com, so set a calendar reminder if you want a holiday weekend site.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Livonia, Michigan?
Late May through early October is prime time to rent an RV in Livonia, with July averaging a comfortable 81°F high and 64°F low and August running just slightly cooler. June and September are the sweet spots: warm days, fewer mosquitoes, and lower rates. Fall color peaks in mid-October when the maples around Hines Park and Kensington Metropark turn brilliant orange and red, a stunning backdrop for a road trip. Winters in Livonia get cold (January averages a high of 29°F) and snowy, so most renters stick to April through November. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season weekend in late September for the best mix of weather, prices, and campsite availability.
weather.gov/dtx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You are going to do great, and Livonia is a friendly place to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, and how to dump the tanks, so nobody is left to figure it out alone. Many first-timers in Livonia choose a Class C motorhome or a campervan because they drive like a large van or truck. If highway merging onto I-96 sounds intimidating, request delivery and the host brings the RV to you. You can also message the host through the listing before booking with any question. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around the quiet streets near Schoolcraft College before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002237653-Renting-an-RVWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on M-14, a dead battery at Kensington Metropark, or a lockout at the Wayne County Fairgrounds is just one phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch tire service, jump starts, fuel delivery, and towing across Michigan. For mechanical questions, your host is your second line of defense and usually answers quickly via the in-app messaging. RVezy customer support is also reachable before, during, and after every trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: take a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and propane tank before leaving the driveway, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my RV from Livonia into Canada?
Yes, cross-border travel into Canada is possible on many RVezy listings since Livonia sits just 25 miles from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge, the busiest U.S.-Canada crossing. Because insurance and host approval are required, message the host directly from the listing to confirm Canada travel before you book. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals. Once approved, popular Ontario routes from Livonia include Point Pelee National Park (about 80 miles), Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron (about 160 miles), and Niagara Falls (about 240 miles). Pro tip: bring your passport (not just a license), proof of insurance, and check Canada Border Services Agency rules on firewood, propane, and pets.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel costs should I budget for a Livonia RV road trip?
Budgeting fuel is easy once you know the basics. Most Class B campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes hover around 6 to 10 mpg. Gas prices in the Detroit metro area typically run a bit below the national average, and there are plenty of stations with RV-friendly pumps along Plymouth Road, Middlebelt, and at the Pilot/Flying J in Belleville off I-94. For a 300-mile RV road trip from Livonia to Sleeping Bear Dunes, expect roughly $90 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app and fill up in Livonia before heading north, where gas is often pricier in resort towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Livonia?
Lock in campsites as early as you can, especially in summer. Michigan state parks like Maybury, Proud Lake, and Brighton Recreation Area open reservations through MiDNRReservations.com up to 6 months in advance, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) frequently sell out the day the window opens. Private parks such as Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park usually have more flexibility but still fill on holidays. You'll also need a Michigan Recreation Passport ($14 for residents, $41 for non-residents annually) for vehicle entry to state parks. Pro tip: if you strike out on a weekend, try a Sunday-to-Thursday stay, midweek availability around Livonia is dramatically better.
midnrreservations.com/What are the driving conditions like around Livonia?
Livonia is one of the easier metro Detroit cities to drive an RV in. The grid layout (Plymouth, Five Mile, Six Mile, Seven Mile, Eight Mile) is wide and clear, with most arterials handling large vehicles comfortably. Avoid rush hour on I-96 and I-275 between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., and steer clear of low-clearance areas in downtown Detroit (some viaducts are under 11 feet). Winter brings snow and lake-effect squalls from November through March, so if you're booking off-season, ask your host about snow tires and a stocked emergency kit. Pro tip: head west on I-96 to escape traffic in 20 minutes and you're in rolling lakes country by Brighton.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities do campgrounds near Livonia offer?
Campgrounds near Livonia are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Michigan state park campgrounds like Proud Lake and Brighton Recreation Area offer modern sites with 30/50-amp electric, potable water spigots, vault or flush restrooms, hot showers, and centralized dump stations. Full-hookup sites (water, electric, sewer at the site) are easiest to find at private parks like Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley and Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA in Ypsilanti. Most parks have fire rings, picnic tables, and on-site firewood for sale (don't bring your own, it's a Michigan invasive-species rule). Pro tip: for free dump and fresh water on the road, the Wayne County Fairgrounds and several Love's Travel Stops along I-94 offer RV dump service for a small fee.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping-and-lodgingWhat is actually inside the RVs available in Livonia?
You will be impressed by how livable these rentals are. Most RVs in the Livonia area sleep 4 to 8 people and come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (A/C is a must for Michigan's humid July), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for boondocking. Some Class A and fifth-wheel listings now offer Wi-Fi hotspots and solar panels. Cookware, linens, and camp chairs are sometimes included or available as add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities checklist and ask the host about a starter kit to avoid grocery-store detours on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Livonia,%20MichiganHow does pickup, drop-off, and add-ons work for my Livonia rental?
Pickup is straightforward and usually happens at the host's home or a meeting spot in or near Livonia, with a full walkthrough included. Each host sets pickup and drop-off times, mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day, with unlimited mileage available on select listings), and generator hours. Popular add-ons include delivery and setup, bedding and kitchen kits, camp chairs, bike racks, propane refills, and sani-dump service at return. Fees vary by host but are clearly listed before you book, no surprises. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in one message to your host, many will discount kits if you bundle delivery, linens, and a dump service for your Livonia RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Livonia,%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy with no cash or off-platform transfers, which keeps both you and the host protected. You pay your trip total upfront with a major credit card when you book, and the security deposit is placed as a temporary hold on your card a few days before pickup, separate from your booking payment. As long as the RV returns clean, on time, and undamaged, the hold is released within a few business days after your trip ends. Pro tip: take a short video walk-around with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Livonia, it is the easiest way to document the RV's condition and ensure a smooth deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there cold-weather or winter RV rentals available in Livonia?
Yes, Michigan winters are no obstacle. Several Livonia hosts offer four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and dual furnaces so you can rent comfortably from November through March. Use the search filters to find listings that mention winter use, and message the host to confirm propane capacity and shore-power options. Popular cold-weather destinations from Livonia include cross-country skiing at Maybury State Park, ice fishing on Kent Lake at Kensington Metropark, and winter cabins-with-RV-pads at Holly Recreation Area (45 miles north). Pro tip: book a site with 30/50-amp shore power so you can run an electric space heater and save propane for the road, and pack a heated water hose to prevent freezing.
