Campgrounds and RV parks near Morley, MI

The Muskegon River and Hardy Dam Pond are the main draws. Anglers target smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, and trout on the river system, and paddlers use flatwater stretches suitable for families. Big Bend Park and Oxbow Park both provide direct water access for launching canoes, kayaks, and small boats. Hardy Dam Pond, a six-mile impoundment reached through Newaygo State Park, opens up motorized boating, swimming, and shoreline fishing. The park also has an 18-hole disc golf course, and the adjacent Manistee National Forest offers two-track roads, hiking, and mountain biking. Families often base at Mecosta Pines Campground or River Ridge RV Resort for on-site amenities and day-trip to nearby Big Rapids, Reed City, and the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park for cycling and rail-trail walks. A trailhead for the White Pine Trail sits in Morley itself.

The camping season in the Morley area generally runs from early May through mid-October. Michigan state parks and most private RV resorts open once overnight temperatures reliably stay above freezing, and water systems are typically shut off before hard frost returns in late fall. July and August are the peak months. Weekends fill early at Newaygo State Park and at the larger private resorts, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. June brings warm days, longer daylight, and lighter crowds, while September offers cool nights, fewer bugs, and strong fall color by the second half of the month. Spring can be wet, and the Muskegon River often runs high through April and into May, which affects paddling conditions and some low-lying sites. Winter camping is limited: most public sites close, plowing is not provided at seasonal parks, and only a handful of private parks accept off-season stays. Oxbow Park is one of the few Newaygo County parks that remains open year-round.

Sites in this area range from wooded and rustic to open pull-throughs with full hookups. Newaygo State Park is rustic with a central sanitation station and potable water but no site-side electric, while Newaygo County parks such as Big Bend and Oxbow generally offer water, electricity, and sewage disposal, and private resorts commonly add 30 or 50 amp power at the pad. Cell coverage is generally usable on the main carriers along US-131 but drops in the river valleys and inside Manistee National Forest. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Morley, Big Rapids, and Newaygo, so extended resupply runs are rarely needed. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies near the river through early summer, occasional spongy moth outbreaks at Newaygo State Park, and quiet hours enforced at both public and private parks. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Michigan rules limiting out-of-area wood transport.
