Campgrounds and RV parks near Saint Clair, MI

Freighter watching along the St. Clair River is the signature activity. Algonac State Park is best known for its views of freighters traveling along the St. Clair River, and the 1,550-acre park boasts a half-mile of riverfront, campgrounds, trails and a 1,200-plus-acre dedicated natural area. The river also supports strong walleye fishing and paddling in protected channels. Cyclists and hikers can pick up the 54-mile Bridge to Bay Trail, which goes through the park and is open to hiking, running and biking. Families staying at Port Huron KOA Resort have access to a swimming pool, a mini-golf course, a dog park, and staff-led activities during peak season, while day trips reach Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, Lakeside Park on Lake Huron, and the Thomas Edison Depot Museum in Port Huron. The Algonac State Park Shooting Range includes archery, hand trap and rifle/handgun ranges, open during daytime hours.

The camping window in this part of Michigan is short and busy. Wagon Wheel at Algonac State Park typically operates from spring through late October, and most private resorts in the area follow a similar schedule. Summer is peak: for the best experience, especially during peak summer months, make reservations well in advance as the campground can get quite busy, with popular weekends booking out months ahead. Late spring and early fall are quieter. Days are cool to mild, bugs ease off after the first frost, and freighter traffic on the river continues into late autumn. Fall color along the Thumb Coast typically peaks in mid to late October. Winter effectively closes the loop for most RV travelers. State park modern facilities shut down, most private parks winterize, and lake-effect systems off Lake Huron can drop heavy snow. Winter camping is also available at Algonac, though amenities like bathrooms and water are not accessible during this season. Anyone planning a shoulder-season trip should confirm hookup availability directly with the campground, since water service is often shut off well before the posted closing date.

Site quality varies noticeably between parks. At Algonac State Park, the riverside loop features open sites with minimal shade but prime water views, while the Wagon Wheel section provides a more wooded setting with sites tucked among trees. The campground includes both electric-only sites and full hookup options, though several reviewers mention awkward utility placement that requires longer hoses and cables, so pack extensions. The north section of the campground features full hookup sites, meaning there are no shared restrooms or showers in that area. Private resorts in the area lean toward pull-through sites with 30/50 amp service and full hookups. Port Huron KOA Resort offers Pull-Thru, 30 Amp full hookup deluxe sites as gravel sites with a cement patio, along with back-in options and premium KOA Patio sites with 50 amp service. Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout St. Clair County, and grocery, fuel, and dump stations are all within a short drive of the river corridor.
