Campgrounds near Saint Johns, Michigan
Saint Johns sits in Clinton County in the central Lower Peninsula, about 20 minutes north of Lansing along US-127. The area is farm country, with the town known for its mint heritage and the annual Mint Festival held in downtown Saint Johns each August. For RV travelers, it offers a quiet base within easy reach of the Lansing metro, Michigan State University, and central Michigan's trail and lake network.
The closest destination camping is Sleepy Hollow State Park, a 2,600-acre unit built around the 410-acre Lake Ovid with 181 modern campsites plus two cabins and equestrian sites. Private options in the surrounding area include Just In Time Campground near Ithaca, Campgrounds-R-Us, Lansing Cottonwood Campground on the south side of Lansing, and Leisure Lake Family Campground.
Most sites within Sleepy Hollow are electric-only with a shared sanitation station, while several nearby private parks add full hookups, longer pull-throughs, and family amenities like pools and playgrounds. Grocery runs and RV supplies are handled in Saint Johns itself, which has both a Kroger and a Walmart.
Things to do near Saint Johns
Sleepy Hollow State Park is the main draw. Lake Ovid is a no-wake lake suited to kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats, with four fishing piers, a swim beach, and a boat launch. The park has 16 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails plus miles of horse trails, an 18-hole disc golf course in the day-use area on Lake Ovid, and a designated metal-detecting area.
Off-park activities are close by. The Crosby Mint Farm on the east side of Saint Johns offers tours during the growing season, and the downtown Mint Festival in August brings vendors, parades, and live music. Lansing and East Lansing, roughly 20 to 30 minutes south, add museums, the Potter Park Zoo, MSU campus attractions, and Michigan State football on autumn Saturdays.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when weather is warm and school is out. Summer weekends at Sleepy Hollow book up early, and holiday windows around July 4 and Labor Day typically sell out months ahead. The Mint Festival in Saint Johns each August is another local demand spike worth planning around.
Late spring and early fall are the best value for RV renters. May and September bring cool nights, thinner crowds, migrating waterfowl on Lake Ovid, and fewer bugs. Fall color usually peaks in mid-October through the hardwood stands in the park.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Sleepy Hollow offers year-round recreation with 181 modern campsites, and its trail network supports snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding. Most private campgrounds in the area close between mid-October and mid-May, so confirm operating dates directly with each park before booking a shoulder-season trip.

We had a great weekend! Pickup and drop off were easy to coordinate and the unit was so light to tow with our Subaru outback. The camper came well equipped and was perfect for off-grid camping.

How to book
Sleepy Hollow State Park is reserved through the Michigan DNR system at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Campsites, overnight lodging and harbor slips can be reserved 6 months to the date of arrival in advance on a rolling daily basis, so summer weekends and holidays should be locked in as soon as the date becomes available. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into all Michigan state parks and recreation areas in addition to the site fee.
Private parks such as Just In Time Campground, Campgrounds-R-Us, Lansing Cottonwood Campground, and Leisure Lake Family Campground each run their own reservations by phone or website. Check length limits, hookup type, and pet policies before confirming.
What to expect on arrival
The modern campground is divided into two loops, the north loop and south loop, and each campsite has its own asphalt or concrete pad, surrounded by shrubs for natural privacy. Hookups are electric only; potable water and a sanitation station are available in the campground. Some sites offer 50-amp service, and pull-through sites are available. Certified heat-treated firewood is sold on site, and hauling outside firewood into Michigan state parks is discouraged due to invasive pests.
Private parks in the area generally add full hookups, WiFi, and family amenities, though site sizes and shade vary. Cell coverage in the Saint Johns area is reliable on major carriers. Dogs must be kept on a six-foot leash in the state park, and standard state park quiet hours apply overnight.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Saint Johns, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Saint Johns, MI?
Renting an RV in Saint Johns is affordable compared to bigger tourist hubs. Motorhomes near Saint Johns typically range from about $175 to $250 per night, while travel trailers and fifth wheels usually run $95 to $150 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. For a cheap RV rental Saint Johns trip, target shoulder weeks in May or September when Sleepy Hollow State Park is open but demand is lower. Pro tip: book a towable trailer with delivery if you do not want to drive a big rig. The host hauls and levels it at your campsite, so you only pay fuel for your own vehicle. Check current pricing on RVezy to compare listings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Johns%2C%20MichiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Saint Johns, Michigan?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Saint Johns. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you will find on RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking platform in a few quick steps. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters in Saint Johns are surprised at how simple the paperwork is, leaving more time for cider mills and Lake Ovid sunsets.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Saint Johns protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Saint Johns booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built into your booking. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind on roads like US-127 or out near Maple River State Game Area. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your trip, so you stay in control of your coverage level rather than the host deciding for you. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it means an unexpected hailstorm rolling across mid-Michigan farmland will not derail your trip or your budget.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Saint Johns RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Saint Johns is lower-risk than most people expect. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a grace period right after you book during which you can cancel for a full refund. After the grace period, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. You can review the current policy details on the RVezy Help Center before confirming. Pro tip: book early for the St. Johns Mint Festival in August, knowing the grace period has your back if plans shift.

Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental Saint Johns dog parents love. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you will see listings whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots (some charge a small pet cleaning fee, shown upfront). Once you are on the road, Sleepy Hollow State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and in designated pet-friendly areas, and downtown St. Johns has dog-friendly patios along Clinton Avenue. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any size or breed details so check-in goes smoothly.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/parks/sleepy-hollowCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Saint Johns?
Yes, RV delivery Saint Johns is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are new to RVing. Many hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Sleepy Hollow State Park or to your driveway in town, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this option; each sets their own delivery fee based on distance. It is perfect for families who want a hassle-free RV camping Saint Johns experience without ever getting behind the wheel of a 30-foot motorhome.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Johns%2C%20MichiganHow far can I drive, and do any rentals include unlimited mileage?
You have plenty of range for a Saint Johns RV trip. Hosts each set their own daily mileage allowance (commonly around 100 to 150 miles per day), and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on, especially for longer road trips. From Saint Johns, you are about 25 miles north of Lansing, 75 miles from Grand Rapids, 90 miles from Frankenmuth, and roughly 150 miles from Lake Michigan beaches near Ludington. Pro tip: add up your planned route before booking and pick a listing whose mileage matches, or buy an unlimited add-on. It almost always costs less than paying overage fees later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Johns%2C%20MichiganWhere are the best campgrounds near Saint Johns, MI?

Ionia State Recreation Area (about 45 miles southwest) offers a sandy beach and modern campsites on Sessions Lake. Bass Lake Campground in Pewamo and Sleepers Lake area parks also offer quiet weekend stays within an hour of town. For a closer overnight, options around Owosso are an easy pick about 25 miles east. midnrreservations.com/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Saint Johns?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV road trip from Saint Johns, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s°F in May to the mid-80s°F in July and easing back into the 60s by October. June and September are the sweet spot: warm days, cool nights in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes than peak July, and easier campsite availability at Sleepy Hollow. Fall foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October across Clinton County, making cider-mill season at Uncle John's an unforgettable backdrop. Winter rentals are possible too: just look for listings flagged as four-season with heated tanks if you are chasing snowy stillness.
weather.gov/grr/I am first time renting an RV. Will I actually know how to use it?
You will be in great shape, even as a first-time renter. Every RVezy host in Saint Johns gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump procedures so nothing feels like a mystery. Many hosts also leave printed guides and short how-to videos in the rig. If something stumps you mid-trip, message your host directly or contact RVezy support. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick test drive on the quiet rural roads around Saint Johns before heading to your campground. Fifteen minutes behind the wheel makes the next 300 feel easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002714453-RentersWhat happens if I break down on a Michigan road trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing on Michigan roads from US-127 to I-69. One call gets a qualified technician dispatched to your location, whether you are parked near Maple River State Game Area or pulled over on M-21. Your host is also just a message away for rig-specific questions. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN and the roadside number when you pick it up, then save them to your phone so a quick search is not needed during a stressful moment.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Saint Johns RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Interstate travel is wide-open. From Saint Johns you can easily roll into Indiana or Ohio on a single tank or two, and hosts generally welcome routes to popular destinations like the Indiana Dunes (about 200 miles) or Mackinaw City (around 230 miles north). Cross-border trips into Canada via the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron are possible on some listings, but you must confirm with the host and review insurance details before booking, since coverage rules differ. Mexico travel is not allowed on RVezy rentals. Message the host upfront and they will confirm your route in minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on an RV road trip from Saint Johns?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, but easy to budget. Michigan gas prices typically track near the national average, and most Class C motorhomes get about 8 to 10 mpg, campervans and Class B rigs get 14 to 18 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 10 to 12 mpg. For a 300-mile loop from Saint Johns to Traverse City and back, plan roughly $130 to $170 in fuel for a Class C at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Saint Johns or DeWitt before heading north, since prices often jump in tourist towns like Frankenmuth and Cadillac. Filling propane at a Tractor Supply on US-27 is another money-saver.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Saint Johns?
For Michigan state parks like Sleepy Hollow, book up to six months ahead through the Michigan DNR reservation system at midnrreservations.com, which uses a rolling six-month window. Summer weekends, July 4th, and Labor Day at Sleepy Hollow regularly sell out quickly. Private parks are usually bookable two to three months out and have more last-minute openings midweek. Pro tip: if a Saturday is full, grab Sunday through Thursday at Sleepy Hollow and enjoy Lake Ovid almost to yourself. The DNR site also shows real-time site maps so you can pick lakefront or shaded.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Saint Johns?
Driving in and out of Saint Johns is about as RV-friendly as it gets in Michigan. US-127 runs straight through town with wide lanes, gentle grades, and easy on/off ramps, while M-21 east-west handles travel trailers comfortably. The terrain is flat-to-rolling farmland, so you will not face mountain passes or hairpin turns. Watch for two seasonal hazards: spring frost-heave potholes (April through May) and slow-moving farm equipment on rural roads at harvest. Winter brings snow squalls between November and March, so check MDOT's Mi Drive map before heading out. Pro tip: avoid Lansing's I-496 during MSU football Saturdays. Game-day traffic can turn a 30-minute trip into 90.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Saint Johns?
Most campgrounds near Saint Johns are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Sleepy Hollow State Park offers electric hookups at modern sites (no water/sewer at individual sites), modern restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, and a potable water fill-up spot. Private parks in the region typically have full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. If you are boondocking or visiting Maple River State Game Area, plan to dump and fill in advance. Pro tip: the dump station at Sleepy Hollow is free for registered campers, making it the most convenient option in the area.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks/parks/sleepy-hollowWhat is inside the RVs available for rent in Saint Johns?
You will feel right at home. Motorhome rental Saint Johns options typically come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunk beds in family rigs, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower, dinette seating that converts to extra sleeping space, air conditioning, furnace heat, and a propane or onboard generator for boondocking. Many include a flat-screen TV, and some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and bike racks. Class B campervan rental Saint Johns options are more compact but still cover the essentials. All seats used while driving have seatbelts. Pro tip: check the listing photos for the kitchen layout. A good prep counter makes camp cooking much more enjoyable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Johns%2C%20MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make trips easy with smart add-ons. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generator hours, bike racks, paddleboards, and pet packages. Delivery and setup is one of the most popular add-ons around Saint Johns: hosts will drop the rig at Sleepy Hollow State Park or your home for a flat fee tied to distance. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Saint Johns, DeWitt, or nearby Lansing, with a walkthrough included. Pro tip: choose Instant Book listings if you want to confirm quickly; otherwise message the host to lock in details first.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20Johns%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Saint Johns through RVezy, you pay the rental cost through the platform, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by listing) and released after your trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in similar condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: snap a quick walkaround video at pickup and again at return. It takes two minutes and is the single best way to avoid any deposit disagreements, so your refund hits your card without a hitch.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in winter near Saint Johns, and how do I stay warm?
Yes, winter rentals near Saint Johns are possible and can be magical, with snow-dusted farmland and quiet lakes at Sleepy Hollow. Look for listings marked as four-season or winterized, which include heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and stronger furnaces to handle Michigan's January lows that often dip into the teens°F. Plan to stay at parks that keep electric sites open year-round or use full shore power at private campgrounds. Pack RV antifreeze for the gray tank, a heated drinking-water hose, and skirting if you will be parked more than a few days. Pro tip: many hosts offer lower nightly rates from December through March, making winter a strong value.
