Campgrounds near South Lyon, Michigan
South Lyon sits in southeast Michigan's Oakland and Livingston county lakes region, roughly 40 minutes northwest of downtown Detroit. RV travelers based here have quick access to a dense cluster of state recreation areas and a large private RV resort, most within a 30-minute drive. The terrain is rolling glacial moraine with kettle lakes, oak forest, and the Huron River corridor.
The closest full-service option is Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley, a family-oriented RV resort with full hookups. State-run options include Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres on the scenic Huron River in Oakland County, home to a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access sites, and an extensive trail system, plus Brighton Recreation Area, a 4,947-acre park with nine lakes and five campgrounds including the rustic Murray Lake sites, and Highland Recreation Area, a 25-site rustic facility within 5,900 acres of forest, marshes, and kettle lakes.
Camp Dearborn, a 626-acre park in Milford Township owned by the City of Dearborn, has several ponds and lakes plus a half-mile swimming beach and rounds out the mix as a large municipal camping complex.
Things to do near South Lyon
Water activity is the main draw. Fishing is popular on the Huron River and Proud Lake, and the park's section of the Huron River is managed as a Type I trout stream. Paddlers can put in at Proud Lake Recreation Area, where canoes and kayaks are available to rent in both the day-use area and modern campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Trail networks are extensive. Highland Recreation Area has 44 miles of trails open to equestrians, mountain bikers, and hikers, and Brighton's 35-mile trail system is open to horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking, with equestrian amenities including an equestrian-only campground and staging area. Murray Lake at Brighton has direct access to a trail open to mountain biking.
For day trips, Kensington Metropark, the Detroit Zoo, and Novi's shopping and dining are all within roughly 30 minutes.

The core RV season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Summer weekends fill fastest at modern state campgrounds like Proud Lake, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day are typically booked out weeks in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation window.
Spring brings variable weather and higher water on the Huron River, which is a plus for paddlers but can mean cool overnight temperatures. Fall delivers hardwood color through October and quieter sites midweek. Proud Lake's campground is open year-round, though services scale back in the off season at all area parks.
Rustic satellite loops sometimes operate on a limited schedule. The Murray Lake rustic campground at Brighton is open Memorial Day through Labor Day on weekends only, Friday through Sunday. There are no amenities at Murray Lake itself, but campers have use of showers and dumpsters at the developed Bishop Lake campground about six minutes away. Confirm the loop schedule before booking.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book campgrounds near South Lyon
State recreation areas use the Michigan DNR reservation system. Reservations at Proud Lake are available through MiDNRReservations.com up to six months in advance, and the same booking window and platform apply to Brighton and Highland. Reservations can also be made by calling 1-800-447-2757.
All state park entries require a pass. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into state parks and recreation areas, state boat launches, state forest campgrounds, and state trail parking lots. It is separate from the nightly campsite fee and can be added at license renewal for Michigan residents or purchased on arrival.
Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books through Campspot. Camp Dearborn is owned and operated by the City of Dearborn Parks and Recreation Department and gives priority to Dearborn residents, so nonresidents should confirm availability early.
What to expect on-site
Amenities vary sharply by property. All sites at Proud Lake's modern campground are back-in with either grass or cement pads and include 30- or 50-amp electrical service, fire rings, and picnic tables. A modern bathhouse with flush toilets and hot showers serves the loops, and a sanitation station with three lanes and potable water is available for RV campers.
Expect fewer services at rustic loops. Murray Lake has two vault toilets and a hand pump for potable water, and the campground has direct access to a trail open to mountain biking, with no electrical hookups. At Highland, there are no modern restrooms, but vault toilets and a water pump providing potable water are available.
For full hookups near South Lyon, Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley offers waterfront sites, easy back-in access, and full water and electric service with a picnic table and fire ring at each site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near South Lyon, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Lyon, MI?
RV rental in South Lyon, Michigan is surprisingly affordable, with travel trailers averaging around $120 a night and motorhomes near $200 a night on RVezy. Many South Lyon hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly and monthly bookings, which makes a week at Kensington Metropark or Brighton Recreation Area very budget friendly. To find cheap RV rental South Lyon options, filter by price, book midweek, and aim for May or September shoulder season when nightly rates and campground fees drop. Pro tip: combine a discounted weekly rental with a Michigan Recreation Passport ($15 for residents in 2026) and you have a full Pure Michigan getaway for less than a hotel weekend in nearby Novi.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passportWhat license do I need to rent an RV in South Lyon, Michigan?
Good news for first time renters: your regular Michigan driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Lyon. The state of Michigan does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels rented through RVezy. To be an approved driver on RVezy you generally must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identity right inside the booking flow so there are no surprises at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Grab an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before you fly into Detroit Metro (DTW), and you're ready to roll out to Kent Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in South Lyon?
Every RV rental in South Lyon, MI booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road to Sleeping Bear Dunes or Mackinac with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), picking the tier that fits your comfort and budget, and it covers qualifying physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, which is reassuring on I-96 or a gravel road in Brighton Recreation Area. Most renters find the standard tier is plenty for a weekend at Bishop Lake, while upgraded tiers are popular for longer Up North trips.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my South Lyon RV rental?
Booking an RV in South Lyon is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, not the individual host. After you book, your refund eligibility depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel, and qualifying circumstances may apply. Because it is a platform-wide RVezy process, you will not see a different cancellation policy on each listing. Pro tip: lock in your Memorial Day or Fourth of July rental as soon as MiDNRReservations.com opens campsite bookings six months out, knowing your RVezy reservation follows a consistent cancellation process if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in South Lyon?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental South Lyon options are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome four legged guests. Michigan state parks like Brighton Recreation Area and Proud Lake Recreation Area allow dogs on a 6 foot leash throughout campgrounds and most trails (just not designated swim beaches). Kensington Metropark also has a designated off leash dog area off Buno Road. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy Huron River paws and confirm any pet fee with your host when you message them, so check in at the campground office is smooth.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/rulesCan the RV be delivered to my campground near South Lyon?
Yes, RV delivery South Lyon is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're new to towing or don't want to drive a motorhome through Detroit Metro traffic. Many local hosts will deliver to Bishop Lake Campground in Brighton Recreation Area, Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson, Haas Lake Park RV Campground, or Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township, then level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, enter your campground address, and the listing will show the delivery fee upfront. Pro tip: book delivery plus a generator add on if you're heading to a rustic site without electric.

Top picks include Bishop Lake Modern Campground in Brighton Recreation Area (electric sites on a swim lake), Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson (full hookups and four on site lakes), Haas Lake Park RV Campground (lakeside private park), Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (year round, river access), and Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in White Lake (30 amp electric, big sites). Pro tip: book state park sites at MiDNRReservations.com exactly six months ahead at 8 a.m. Eastern, the moment your dates open.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from South Lyon?
The sweet spot for an RV road trip from South Lyon is late May through early October, with daytime highs ranging from the mid 60s in May to the mid 80s in July and back to crisp 60s in October. June through August is peak season with the warmest Kent Lake swimming weather, while September delivers fall color along the Huron River and far smaller crowds at Brighton Recreation Area. Winters in South Lyon are cold and snowy (lows in the teens, frequent lake effect snow), so most private campgrounds close from November through mid April. Pro tip: aim for the third week of September for the best mix of warm days, no bugs, and easy state park reservations.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around South Lyon?
Yes, first time renting an RV in South Lyon is genuinely easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host gives you a hands on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump valves, so you're not figuring anything out alone. South Lyon itself is small town friendly with wide roads, and you can avoid Detroit highway driving altogether by sticking to I-96, US-23, and back roads out to Kensington or Pinckney. If even that feels like a lot, choose a host who offers delivery and skip driving entirely. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip, they handle a lot like a big pickup.
michigan.gov/msp/divisions/cvoWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're never stranded on an RVezy trip. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on M-59, a dead battery at Proud Lake, or a slide that won't retract at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a quick text away for the small stuff like figuring out the awning or the water pump switch. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if you need anything else. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway in South Lyon, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN sticker for faster service.

Yes, an RV road trip from South Lyon across state lines is welcome and easy. You can cruise into Ohio for Cedar Point (about 110 miles south), Indiana Dunes National Park (about 235 miles southwest), or all the way to the Smokies without any extra paperwork. Canada travel may also be allowed depending on your host's insurance, and the Blue Water Bridge to Sarnia, Ontario is just 90 minutes east via I-69 if you want to add Niagara Falls or Toronto to your itinerary. Just message the host directly from the listing to confirm cross border coverage before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there.

Most renters budget realistically when planning fuel for an RV rental Michigan trip. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan 16 to 20, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer about 10 to 12. With Michigan gas prices hovering around $3.20 to $3.60 a gallon in 2026, a 500 mile round trip from South Lyon to Sleeping Bear Dunes in a Class C runs roughly $175 to $225 in fuel. michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping-and-lodgingWhat are driving conditions like around South Lyon for a larger RV?
Driving conditions in and around South Lyon are RV friendly for most rigs. I-96, US-23, and M-59 are wide modern freeways with easy on and off ramps to popular escapes like Kensington Metropark (about 10 miles north) and Brighton Recreation Area (about 15 miles west). Watch for low clearance bridges if you head into downtown Detroit, the Pontiac Trail roundabouts near Lyon Township, and unpaved roads like Bishop Lake Road which are passable but bumpy after rain. Winter brings lake effect snow and road salt, so most renters stick to May through October. Pro tip: stay west of I-275 when possible to avoid Detroit Metro Airport congestion in your motorhome.
michigan.gov/mdotWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near South Lyon?
You'll be in great shape because campgrounds near South Lyon offer a mix of full and partial hookups. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson has full hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric), free Wi-Fi, and a heated pool. Bishop Lake Modern Campground at Brighton Recreation Area provides electric only sites with a central dump station and clean shower buildings. Haas Lake Park offers full hookups and waterfront sites. Most state park sites include a picnic table, fire ring, and potable water spigot nearby. Pro tip: dump and fill at the Bishop Lake entrance station before you leave, it's free for registered campers and saves a stop on the way home to South Lyon.

Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically have seatbelts for 4 to 8 passengers, a TV, and often an onboard generator for off-grid stays. Many South Lyon hosts also include linens, cookware, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of paper goods. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and message your host to confirm Wi-Fi availability or generator hours before booking, especially if you're heading somewhere remote like Pictured Rocks.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Lyon%2C%20MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work for a South Lyon RV rental?
Payment for your motorhome rental South Lyon or campervan rental South Lyon is handled entirely through RVezy's secure checkout, no cash or e-transfers to the host. You'll pay your booking total by credit card when you confirm, and the refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment, with a pre authorization placed on your card before pickup and released after your return inspection. Pro tip: use a credit card with travel protections and enough available limit to comfortably cover the deposit hold.
