Campgrounds near Walled Lake

Walled Lake sits in western Oakland County, roughly 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, and is surrounded by a dense network of state recreation areas and private RV parks along the Huron River corridor. Most nearby campgrounds are clustered within a 20-minute drive, making it a practical base for both weekend trips and longer Metro Detroit visits. Proud Lake Recreation Area, approximately 3,000 acres on the Huron River and Proud Lake, is the closest state-managed campground and offers a modern 130-site loop with 30- and 50-amp electric service, overnight cabins, and boating access. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson (formerly Haas Lake Park RV Campground) is a large private RV resort with 494 sites, four on-site lakes, and water-and-electric or full-hookup options; tent camping is not permitted. Highland Recreation Area covers thousands of acres of rolling hills and kettle lakes with rustic and equestrian camping, while Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area offers wooded modern sites with electric hookups and access to a nationally ranked mountain bike trail. Camp Dearborn, a 626-acre park in Milford owned by the City of Dearborn, rounds out the options with 191 RV and tent sites, cabins, and resort-style amenities.

Things to do around Walled Lake

Water is the main draw. Proud Lake Recreation Area manages its section of the Huron River as a Type I trout stream and offers canoe and kayak rentals in both the day-use area and the modern campground from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area has the longest beach in southeast Michigan at just over half a mile, plus a boat launch on the 600-acre all-sports lake. Trail users have plenty of ground to cover. Highland Recreation Area offers hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, and includes the Haven Hill National Natural Landmark. Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area's 11-mile mountain bike trail has been ranked among the top 100 in the United States and is considered one of the most technical in southeast Michigan. Families staying at Camp Dearborn can use a half-mile swimming beach, a heated pool, paddle boat rentals, mini golf, a zip line, and the 27-hole Mystic Creek golf course.

The prime camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when facilities are fully staffed, canoe and kayak rentals are open at Proud Lake, and Camp Dearborn's beach, pool, and programs are operating. Camp Dearborn's peak season runs from mid-June through mid-August with expanded programming. Summer weekends fill fast at the state recreation areas; Michigan DNR reservations open six months in advance to the date of arrival. Spring and fall are quieter, with strong fishing on the Huron River trout stream, which is typically stocked in late March or early April, and cool-weather hiking at Highland and Pontiac Lake. Foliage typically peaks from mid-October into early November. Note that the modern campground at Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area is closed through September 1, 2026 for sanitation-station renovations, though the day-use area, shelters, equestrian campground, and group camp remain open. Winter camping is limited. Michigan DNR rustic sites stay open year-round at some parks, but modern loops and private resorts like Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley close or run reduced services once temperatures drop and water lines are shut off.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book

Michigan state recreation areas, including Proud Lake, Highland, and Family - Pontiac Lake Recreational Area, are reserved through MiDNRReservations.com or by phone via the DNR call center. Campsites, lodging, and harbor slips can be booked up to six months to the date of arrival in advance, and popular summer weekends should be locked in as early as possible. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry at any state park or recreation area. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley takes reservations directly through the Sun Outdoors website; it offers water-and-electric or full-hookup RV sites with 30- or 50-amp service but does not permit tent camping. Camp Dearborn reservations are handled by the City of Dearborn and include nightly or weekly RV, tent, and cabin rentals during the summer season.

What to expect

State recreation area campgrounds in this corridor are wooded and generally quiet, with electric hookups but no individual sewer or water at the sites; sanitation stations are provided. Terrain at Proud Lake is hilly with mostly back-in sites, so larger rigs should plan for leveling blocks. Only certified heat-treated firewood should be brought in to protect Michigan forests from invasive pests. Private parks are more resort-style. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley has pull-through and back-in sites accommodating RVs up to 60 feet, four lakes with beaches, and planned family activities, but no tent camping. Camp Dearborn is family-oriented with organized programs, hayrides, and dances, and its loops include a mix of full-hookup and electric-only sites for RVs, plus tent sites and cabins.
