Campgrounds near Westland, Michigan
Westland sits in western Wayne County, roughly 20 miles west of downtown Detroit and about the same distance east of Ann Arbor. That places RV travelers within a short drive of both metro attractions and the lakes-and-trails corridor of Oakland and Livingston counties, where most of the region's campgrounds are clustered.
The closest full-service RV option is Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti, which surrounds a private lake and offers RV sites, tent sites and cabins along with pull-throughs, 30 and 50 amp service, water and sewer hookups, a dump station and laundry. To the northwest, Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley near New Hudson caters to pop-ups through large RVs. Proud Lake Recreation Area, a roughly 3,000-acre state park on the Huron River about 40 minutes from downtown Detroit, adds a modern campground, overnight lodging, boating access, fishing and an extensive trail network open to hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
Camp Lord Willing Management RV Park and Campground and Camp Dearborn, the City of Dearborn's 626-acre recreational retreat in Milford with rustic cabins, resort cabins and sites for tents or trailers, round out the closest choices.
Things to do near Westland
Water activities dominate summer plans. Camp Dearborn features a half-mile of sandy beach, athletic fields, tennis, basketball, sand volleyball and pickleball courts, shaded picnic areas, swimming and fishing lakes, a concession stand and a 27-hole championship golf course. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley adds lakefront sites for fishing and beach time.
Proud Lake is the paddling and trail hub. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent Memorial Day through Labor Day, with paddling on both the Huron River and Proud Lake from access points at the Huron Fishing Site and off Bass Lake Road. Trails are open to hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking, with about 20 miles of network in total.
Off site, the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday sits between Detroit and Ann Arbor with quick access to the University of Michigan, the US-Canadian border and Great Lakes day trips.

The southeast Michigan camping season is short and centered on summer. Private parks generally run late spring through fall: the Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday operates roughly April through October, and Camp Dearborn runs from May 1 through November 1, with peak season from mid-June through mid-August packed with extra programs and events.
Summer weekends are the busiest window, driven by holiday programming. Camp Dearborn hosts fireworks over Lake Six on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend, and the KOA runs themed weekends throughout the season, including Halloween weekends where campers decorate sites, ride a haunted hayride and enter costume contests. Reserving early for any weekend from late June through August is advised.
Shoulder season is quieter and cooler. October brings four Halloween weekends at Camp Dearborn with Friday and Saturday activities, sweet treats before Sunday checkout and campground trick-or-treating. Winter tent and RV camping in the region is limited, though Proud Lake keeps some rustic camping open year-round.

This was our very first time renting an RV, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we booked, our host, Binbin, was incredibly kind, patient, and welcoming. Anytime I had a question—no matter how small—I could call or message him, and he was always quick to answer. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly and never made me feel like I was asking too many questions. By the time we left, I felt like an RV pro thanks to him! The RV itself was absolutely beautiful, spotless, and exceptionally well maintained. It was comfortable, spacious, and had everything my family needed for an amazing trip. You can tell Binbin truly takes pride in taking care of his RV and making sure his guests have a wonderful experience. This trip created memories we'll never forget, and a big part of that was because of how wonderful Binbin was as a host. I genuinely can't say enough good things about him. If you're considering renting an RV, I highly recommend this one. We will definitely be renting from Binbin again for our future trips. Thank you, Binbin, for making our first RV adventure so enjoyable, stress-free, and memorable!

How to book a campsite near Westland
Reservation systems vary by operator. State-park sites at Proud Lake Recreation Area are booked through the Michigan DNR at MiDNRReservations.com or by calling 1-800-447-2757. Campsites and overnight lodging can be reserved up to six months in advance on a rolling window, and popular summer weekends often fill within minutes of opening. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to all Michigan state parks and recreation areas.
Private parks each use their own booking channel. The Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday takes reservations directly through koa.com. Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley books through the Sun Outdoors site and Campspot. Camp Dearborn uses an online reservation portal at book.campdearborn.com or by phone at (248) 684-6000. For summer holiday weekends, book several months out.
What to expect at campgrounds near Westland
Expect suburban-adjacent campgrounds rather than remote wilderness. The Detroit / Ann Arbor KOA Holiday is positioned between Detroit and Ann Arbor and surrounds a private 35-acre lake with a walking trail. It accommodates RVs of all sizes with pull-thru sites, 30 and 50 amp service, full water and sewer hookups, a dump station, laundry, hot showers and Wi-Fi. Check-in is 2 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.
Proud Lake's modern campground has electric hookups but no water or sewer at individual sites, with a shared modern bathhouse and a dump station on property. Michigan state park check-in for camping starts at 3 p.m. with checkout at 1 p.m.
Bring only certified heat-treated firewood sold in state parks and local stores, since hauling firewood from other parts of the state can spread invasive insects and tree diseases.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Westland, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Westland, MI?
An RV rental in Westland is one of the more affordable ways to explore Southeast Michigan. On RVezy, towable trailers typically average around $125 per night, while motorhomes average about $200 per night, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts. To find a cheap RV rental Westland travelers love, filter by price, book midweek, and consider shoulder months like May or September when nightly rates often dip. Pro tip: if you're heading to a Lions game at Ford Field or a Tigers game at Comerica Park, booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance helps lock in better rates before Detroit demand spikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westland,MichiganDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Westland, Michigan?
Great news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Westland for nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for standard recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers on the platform. All RVezy approved drivers are generally required to be 25 or older, and you'll verify your identity and driver's license through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set to roll.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Westland RV rental?
You can book with confidence: every RV rental in Westland booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damages to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real peace of mind. During checkout, you choose the coverage level that fits your trip (hosts do not pick this for you), so you can scale up if you're planning a longer Michigan RV trip. Pro tip: review the coverage options before booking so you understand your deductible and what's protected from day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Westland RV booking?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy on every reservation, not individual hosts, so you get consistent rules whether you're renting a campervan or a Class A motorhome in Westland. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, and cancellations made further from your trip start date generally receive better refunds than last-minute changes. If a host cancels your booking, RVezy helps you receive a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates, then reach out to RVezy support if plans change; they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Westland RV rental?
Absolutely: a pet-friendly RV rental Westland families love is just a filter click away on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers from hosts who genuinely welcome dogs, often with extras like pet beds and tie-outs. Many area campgrounds, including Camp Dearborn in Milford and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson, welcome leashed pets, and Lower Huron Metropark just south of Westland has miles of paved trails perfect for a morning walk. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and share your dog's size and breed so check-in is smooth.
metroparks.com/lower-huron-metropark/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Westland?
Yes, and it's a game-changer for first-timers: RV delivery Westland hosts offer it on many RVezy listings, meaning the owner drives the RV to your campground, driveway, or event location, levels it, hooks up utilities, and gives you a full walkthrough. This is especially popular for tailgaters heading to University of Michigan football in Ann Arbor or families staying at Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley. Use the Delivery filter to view eligible RVs; delivery fees typically scale with distance. Pro tip: ask about delivery to your specific campground when you message the host; many already know the layout and will set you up at the perfect angle.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westland,MichiganHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Michigan RV trip?
You have plenty of road ahead: each host on RVezy sets their own mileage policy, with options ranging from generous daily limits to RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings. From Westland, you can reach Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in about 4.5 hours (around 240 miles), Mackinaw City in roughly 4.5 hours (around 285 miles), Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in around 7 hours (around 415 miles), and Traverse City wine country in about 4 hours (around 225 miles). Detroit and Ann Arbor are quick day trips under 45 minutes. Pro tip: estimate your total miles before booking and filter for higher mileage allowances or unlimited packages to avoid overage fees.
nps.gov/slbe/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Westland, MI?
You're spoiled for choice: the best campgrounds near Westland blend easy access with classic Michigan lake-and-forest charm. Top picks include Camp Dearborn in Milford (about 20 miles north, with lakes and cabins), Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley in New Hudson (full hookups and spring-fed lakes), Detroit/Greenfield KOA Holiday in Ypsilanti (closest full-service KOA), Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township (state park camping), and Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park in Belleville (about 15 minutes south, seasonal). Pro tip: for RV camping Westland weekends in July and August, book at least 2 to 3 months ahead, especially around the Woodward Dream Cruise weekend in mid-August.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for a Westland RV trip?
Southeast Michigan rewards travelers who time it right: the sweet spot for a Westland RV trip is mid-May through early October, when daytime highs run roughly 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and campgrounds are in full swing. July and August are warmest (often mid-80s) and best for lake swimming at Kensington Metropark. September and early October bring crisp 60 to 70 degree days and spectacular fall color along the Huron River, with fewer crowds and lower nightly rates. Winter rentals are available too if you're chasing snow adventures. Pro tip: book a late-September trip to combine harvest season at local cider mills with peak foliage drives.
weather.gov/dtx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting in Westland?
You've got this, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane and water systems before you turn the key. If you're nervous about navigating Metro Detroit traffic on I-94 or I-275, choose a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer, or book delivery so the host drives it for you. First time renting an RV? Message the host with questions before booking; most started as first-timers themselves. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and reverses in an empty lot on a weekend before hitting the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck on I-96 outside Westland or pulled over near Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula. Roadside covers tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and towing to a service location. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app; they know their RV best and can often troubleshoot small issues over the phone (think: how to reset the inverter or relight the water heater). Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Westland RV rental across the border into Canada?
Cross-border road trips are one of the perks of renting in Westland: you're only about 25 miles from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and Ambassador Bridge, so Ontario is a same-day drive. Some RVezy hosts allow travel into Canada, but it depends on the individual host, so message them directly from the listing page before booking to confirm and request written permission. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: if cleared for Canada, popular routes from Westland include Point Pelee National Park (about 90 minutes), Niagara Falls (about 4 hours), and Sandbanks Provincial Park (about 6 hours). Bring your passport and a vehicle authorization letter from the host.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripWhat should I budget for fuel on a Michigan RV road trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans average 15 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Michigan gas prices generally hover near the national average, with stations along I-94 and I-275 near Westland often cheaper than downtown Detroit. For a 4-day, 400-mile RV road trip from Westland to Traverse City and back in a Class C, expect roughly $150 to $225 in fuel depending on prices. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest stations before crossing the Mackinac Bridge.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Westland?
Plan ahead and you'll lock in the best spots: Michigan State Parks like Proud Lake, Pontiac Lake Recreation Area, and Brighton Recreation Area open reservations 6 months in advance through the Michigan DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends fill quickly. Private parks like Camp Dearborn and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley book up 2 to 4 months ahead for July and August. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, you can usually find availability 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for exactly 6 months before your target weekend, log into the Michigan DNR site at 8 a.m. sharp, and you'll snag waterfront sites others miss.
midnrreservations.com/What are driving conditions like around Westland and Metro Detroit?
Driving an RV around Westland is more manageable than most big metros: you're on the western edge of the Detroit area with quick access to I-275, I-96, and I-94 without ever needing to navigate downtown skyscrapers. Roads are flat, well-marked, and free of mountain grades. Watch for rush-hour congestion on I-275 northbound between 7 and 9 a.m. and southbound 4 to 6 p.m., and be aware that Michigan winters can bring icy patches November through March. Low clearance bridges in older Detroit neighborhoods are best avoided in a tall Class A. Pro tip: program your route in an RV-specific GPS app like RV Life or Garmin RV to auto-avoid clearance and weight issues.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities do campgrounds near Westland typically have?
You'll find full-service comfort close to home: most campgrounds near Westland offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer hookups, and on-site dump stations. Camp Dearborn and Sun Outdoors Kensington Valley have full hookups, swimming areas, and Wi-Fi, while Michigan state parks like Proud Lake and Pontiac Lake provide modern restrooms, showers, potable water fill stations, and dump stations (typically free for registered campers). Wayne County Fairgrounds RV Park offers convenient pull-through sites just minutes from Westland with electric and water. Pro tip: if you need a dump or water fill on your way home, the dump station at Pontiac Lake Recreation Area is one of the cleanest and easiest to access in the region.
www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/What's included inside a typical Westland RV rental?
You'll be surprised how move-in ready these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental Westland guests book on RVezy comes with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 4 to 8 with real mattresses, climate control, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many include a TV, Wi-Fi boosters or hotspots, and generators are common on Class C and Class A units for off-grid power. Campervan rental Westland options (Class B) are more compact but still include beds, kitchenettes, and toilets. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm bedding, towels, and a starter propane tank are included so you can pack light.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westland,MichiganWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with RVezy rentals in Westland?
Hosts make it easy to customize: popular add-ons for a Westland RV rental include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, propane fills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer pickup right from their Westland driveway, or delivery to nearby campgrounds and to Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW), which is just a short drive southeast. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited miles for a flat add-on fee. Pro tip: if you're flying into DTW for your trip, filter for hosts offering airport delivery; you'll step off the plane and into a fully stocked RV without needing a rental car.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westland,MichiganHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card when you book, never directly to the host in cash. Your trip total typically includes the nightly rate, service fee, protection plan, and any add-ons you choose. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment (the amount is shown on the listing) and released after your trip ends and the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and dropoff, return on time with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay in touch with your host. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app so you have a clear record if questions ever come up.
