Overview of campgrounds near Coldwater
Coldwater sits in Tate County in northwest Mississippi, roughly a half-hour south of Memphis via I-55. The town is best known as a jumping-off point for Arkabutla Lake, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Coldwater River known for large crappie and excellent sailing conditions. The lake encompasses more than 50,000 acres in northern Mississippi, and surrounding wildlife management areas hold a combined 30,000 acres of public hunting lands where whitetail deer, wild turkeys, quail and waterfowl roam, giving RV travelers easy access to water recreation and quiet forested camping.
RV options in the area split into two groups. Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Arkabutla Lake offer sites with electric hookups, flush toilets, showers and drinking water under mature hardwoods. Private RV parks closer to the Memphis metro cater to full-hookup travelers who want highway access and city amenities.
Named options within easy driving range include Memphis South Campground and RV Park, EZ Daze RV Park, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Memphis, Southaven RV Park, and Travelers Camper Park Campground. Together they cover long-stay pads, family resorts, and simpler overnight stops for travelers passing through on I-55.
Things to do near Coldwater
Arkabutla Lake anchors most trip plans. The lake is home to several species of native fish to Mississippi waters, such as largemouth bass, bream, catfish and crappie, and has become the best sailing lake east of the Mississippi River. Swimming beaches are available at two of the day-use areas: Hernando Point and South Abutment during the warm months.
On land, the Coldwater River Nature Trail System encompasses two hiking trails as well as an interpretive trail, and the Swinging Bridge Nature Trail is also nearby, including a section of land that was part of the river prior to the dam being built. A disc golf course near the dam is also open to the public.
Memphis is close enough for day trips. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Memphis or Southaven RV Park can reach the Memphis Zoo, Beale Street, and Graceland in under an hour.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. Daytime highs sit in the 60s to low 80s, humidity is manageable, and the Corps campgrounds around Arkabutla Lake are fully open. Spring is also the peak crappie run, which pulls anglers to the lake from March through May. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in April and May, and the region sits in a corridor prone to severe weather during that stretch.
Summer brings hot, humid conditions with highs frequently in the 90s. Lake use peaks around holiday weekends, and reservations on Recreation.gov fill well in advance. Shade at Corps sites helps, but hookups at the Corps campgrounds are electric only, so travelers relying on air conditioning should confirm amperage.
Winter is mild by national standards, with daytime highs typically in the low 50s and only a handful of ice days per year. Private parks near Memphis stay open year-round. Arkabutla Lake is currently experiencing substantially lower water levels for an extended period while long-term repairs to Arkabutla Dam are completed, which affects boating access and water-based activities, so confirm ramp status before towing a boat.
How to book campgrounds near Coldwater
Corps of Engineers campgrounds at Arkabutla Lake, which is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are reserved through Recreation.gov, with 9 campgrounds offering various amenities and settings. Arkabutla Lake is a popular destination and campground reservations typically open several months in advance, and popular summer weekends sell out early. A limited number of first-come, first-served sites exist at some locations, but relying on them in peak season is risky.
Private parks handle their own reservations. Memphis South Campground and RV Park, EZ Daze RV Park, Southaven RV Park, and Travelers Camper Park Campground book directly by phone or website. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Memphis takes online reservations and often requires deposits for holiday and event weekends.
A valid Mississippi fishing license is required for anyone fishing the lake or the Coldwater River, and it can be purchased online before arrival.
What to expect when RV camping near Coldwater
Corps of Engineers sites at Arkabutla Lake, such as South Abutment, offer 81 family sites with electric hookups, flush toilets, showers and drinking water, with a central dump station. Sites are situated on the waterfront among rolling hills forested with a shady mixture of oak, hickory, beech, sweet gum and birch trees. Cell service is usable but not uniform around the shoreline.
Private parks closer to Memphis lean toward full hookups, longer paved pads, and amenities such as laundry, pools, and playgrounds. Expect more highway noise at parks along the I-55 corridor and quieter, darker nights at the Corps campgrounds.
Wildlife is active, including deer, wild turkeys, and waterfowl, so food should be stored securely. With Arkabutla Lake experiencing lower water levels, many boat ramps are currently closed, with Hwy. 51 Landing being the only open ramp.
