RV camping near Verona, Mississippi
Verona sits in Lee County in northeast Mississippi, just south of Tupelo along US-45. The area works well as an RV base for exploring the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Tombigbee National Forest, and several state parks within a short drive. Terrain is gently rolling hardwood and pine country with lakes and reservoirs used for fishing, boating, and swimming.
Campground options near Verona range from full-hookup private parks to state-park loops with electric and water sites. Tombigbee State Park and Trace State Park both offer developed RV loops, while Natchez Trace RV Park and Campgrounds at Barnes Crossing provide easier pull-through access closer to Tupelo services. Smithville Marina Campground sits on the Tenn-Tom Waterway for boaters.
Most sites in the region accommodate travel trailers and Class C motorhomes without difficulty. Larger Class A rigs should confirm site length and low-clearance access, especially at wooded state-park loops.
Things to do around Verona
The Natchez Trace Parkway runs just west of Verona and is a slow, scenic route with no commercial traffic, ideal for day drives, cycling, and short interpretive hikes. Tupelo, minutes north, holds the Elvis Presley Birthplace, the Tupelo Automobile Museum, and the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center.
Anglers head to Trace State Park Lake and Tombigbee State Park Lake for bass, crappie, and bluegill. The Tenn-Tom Waterway near Smithville supports larger-boat fishing and cruising. Trace State Park also has multi-use trails popular with mountain bikers and horseback riders.
Families use Barnes Crossing for shopping, movies, and rainy-day resets. Short drives reach Tombigbee National Forest for primitive hiking and the Chickasaw Village Site on the Trace.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings wildflower blooms along the Trace, mild days, and cool nights, though thunderstorms and occasional severe weather are common across north Mississippi in April and May. September through early November delivers drier, warm days, cooler evenings, and lower humidity, making it the most comfortable stretch for hookup camping.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit and frequent pop-up thunderstorms. Shaded state-park loops help, and lake swimming is a draw. Book summer holiday weekends well in advance.
Winters are mild but wet, and December is typically the wettest month of the year. Freezes occur but rarely last long. Some state-park facilities operate on reduced schedules, and bathhouses may close during hard freezes, so travelers should confirm status before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Verona
Mississippi state parks, including Tombigbee State Park and Trace State Park (Deer Run and Eagle Ridge loops), take reservations through the MDWFP Mississippi State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Campsites can be booked up to 13 months in advance, and popular weekends in spring and fall fill early.
Private parks such as Natchez Trace RV Park and Campgrounds at Barnes Crossing accept direct bookings by phone or website and generally allow shorter lead times. Smithville Marina Campground is managed locally near the Tenn-Tom Waterway and should be contacted directly for site availability.
Holidays, Tupelo Elvis Festival weekends, and hunting-season openers push demand up. Reserve early for June through August and for any long weekend.
What to expect on the ground
State-park sites near Verona typically offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water, gravel or paved pads, picnic tables, and fire rings. Sewer hookups are available at some loops but not all, so a dump station plan is useful. Cell coverage is generally solid on major carriers near Tupelo and thinner in wooded park interiors.
Private RV parks near Barnes Crossing and along the Natchez Trace corridor tend toward level, full-hookup sites with easier big-rig access and quicker highway on-ramps. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supply stops are concentrated in Tupelo.
Bugs and humidity are real in summer. Bring screens, repellent, and expect afternoon storms. Ticks and chiggers are common on trails from spring through fall.
