Benton camping overview
Benton is the seat of Scott County in southeast Missouri, sitting just west of the Mississippi River between Cape Girardeau to the north and Sikeston to the south. Scott County was one of the first counties formed after Missouri gained statehood in 1821, and the town of Benton was platted shortly after and named for Thomas Hart Benton, Missouri's first U.S. Senator. The town sits at the crossroads of I-55 and US 61, putting most regional campgrounds within a 30-minute drive.
RV travelers use Benton as a base for Mississippi River recreation, southeast Missouri farm country, and short trips across the river into southern Illinois. The closest RV options cluster along the I-55 corridor in Sikeston and Cape Girardeau, with the region's main state park camping about 20 miles north at Trail of Tears State Park, a public recreation area covering 3,415 acres bordering the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau County.
The nearby General Watkins Conservation Area offers primitive campsites, picnic facilities, and small-lake fishing for travelers who want a quieter, no-hookup stop. Renters looking for full hookups will find better fits at the private parks listed below.
Things to do near Benton
Trail of Tears State Park is situated along the Mississippi River and features two campgrounds, a lake with a swimming area, fishing spots, and hiking trails of varying difficulty. It includes a museum focused on Cherokee history and the forced relocation. The lake features a designated swimming area and boat launch restricted to electric motors only, and fishing opportunities exist both in the lake and along the Mississippi River shoreline, where campers catch catfish from the bank near the boat ramp.
In Cape Girardeau, families visit the riverfront floodwall murals, the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, and Cape Rock Park for river overlooks. Sikeston is home to Lambert's Cafe, the Mississippi River observation deck, the Stars and Stripes Museum, and the annual Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo.
Across the river, Trail Of Tears State Forest in Illinois offers rustic hiking and forest roads for a day trip. Bollinger Mill State Historic Site near Jackson features a working mill and a covered bridge side by side.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in southeast Missouri. Spring brings green woods and the year's heaviest rainfall, so campers should watch river levels and pack rain gear. Summer runs hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, though evenings along the river are the payoff for tolerating the heat.
Most parks in the region remain open year-round but see higher occupancy during spring and fall months. Public campgrounds tend to be busier during hunting seasons, particularly mid-November during Missouri firearm deer season, when nearby conservation areas can fill quickly.
Winter camping is possible at private RV parks but comes with tradeoffs at state parks. During the off-season (November through March) at Trail of Tears State Park, water is off for full hookup sites, and showerhouses are closed. The Mississippi River Campground stays open year round, while the Lake Boutin Campground is open and reservable May 1 through October 31 and offers basic sites. Winter camping may require additional preparation, with temperatures regularly dropping below freezing from December through February.
How to book near Benton
Trail of Tears State Park offers basic, electric and sewer/electric/water campsites and a special-use camping area, and Missouri State Parks campsites can be reserved up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. Reservations may also be made by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Book well ahead during peak season, as the limited number of sites fills quickly.
Private RV parks in the area take direct bookings. Hinton RV Park, The Landing Point RV Park, and Cape Camping and RV Park all handle reservations by phone or through their own websites, and the private parks are commonly listed with Good Sam. At Missouri State Parks, reservable sites may be available on a walk-up basis if not already reserved; before occupying a site, check with the park staff or follow the directions on the posted card or signs.
What to expect on site
Private parks near Benton lean utilitarian and big-rig friendly. Hinton RV Park in Sikeston offers level sites with full hookups including 50-amp service, and The Landing Point RV Park in Cape Girardeau provides pull-through pads suitable for larger motorhomes with 50-amp service and sewer hookups. Cape Camping and RV Park offers paved interior roads, full-hookup sites with gravel pads, Wi-Fi, and basic cable.
Expect some highway noise at the interstate-adjacent parks and quieter conditions at The Landing Point, which sits off the main road. A train line runs near Trail of Tears State Park, so campers will likely hear engine noise and horns as trains pass by, though it also makes for great train photos. Full hookup sites are narrow, but some have views of the Mississippi.
