Campgrounds near De Soto
De Soto sits in Jefferson County in the northeastern Ozarks, roughly an hour south of St. Louis along the Big River corridor. The area is best known to RV travelers for its cluster of Missouri state parks and small private resorts, most within a 30-minute drive of town. Terrain is wooded and rolling, with limestone bluffs, spring-fed creeks, and easy river access shaping most campground layouts.
Washington State Park lies just north of De Soto and is the closest full-service option, offering basic and electric campsites, housekeeping cabins, and float access to the Big River. St Francois State Park, southeast near Bonne Terre, adds a larger campground with electric and basic loops plus a backpack camp on the Pike Run Trail. Private options in the same corridor include Stone Park Resort and Amphitheatre, a full-hookup RV park on wooded acreage near Bonne Terre, plus Cherokee Landing and Forty Acre Club Nudist Resort for travelers looking for something different.
Most sites in the area accommodate mid-size travel trailers and Class C motorhomes; the electric loop at St Francois State Park handles rigs up to about 60 feet.
Things to do near De Soto
The Big River is the main draw. Both Washington State Park and St Francois State Park offer boat launches, gravel-bar swimming, and easy paddling water suited to canoes and kayaks. Washington State Park also has a seasonal swimming pool and watercraft rentals run by the park concession.
Hiking is plentiful. Washington State Park has three rugged trails, including the CCC-built 1000 Steps Trail leading to bluff-top overlooks, plus a nationally recognized prehistoric petroglyph site. St Francois State Park adds Mooner's Hollow Trail and the longer Pike Run Trail, with a hike-in backpack camp for backpackers.
Off-park attractions in easy driving distance include Bonne Terre Mine tours, Elephant Rocks and Johnson's Shut-Ins state parks, and regional wineries around Ste. Genevieve.

During these months, campground water spigots, showerhouses, camp stores, and cabin rentals at Washington State Park are all operating. Summer is peak for river activities, with warm water for swimming and floating; weekends and holidays fill quickly, so book well ahead.
Spring brings the region's heaviest rain and the highest tornado activity in Missouri. Fall is drier and cooler, with peak color usually arriving in mid to late October. Winter camping is possible: St Francois State Park stays open and reservable year-round, and Washington State Park accepts winter campers, though from November through March potable water, modern restrooms, and showers in the campground are shut off.

We had a great time renting this camper! Ray was awesome to work with. He went over everything with us when we picked it up and was always quick to respond if we had any questions. The camper was really clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. It was great to get away with the family annd enjoy some time together without having to worry about anything. We had an awesome weekend, made some great memories, and will definitely be renting from Ray again! Do yourself a favor and take your family camping for a few days too. Cabin rentals at Washington State Park are operated by concessionaire BA Services and booked separately by phone; cabins are open April through October only. Private parks like Stone Park Resort and Amphitheatre are booked directly with the operator and typically stay open year-round.

What to expect
State park campgrounds in this area lean rustic. Expect a mix of basic and 30-amp electric sites, gravel or paved pads, fire rings, picnic tables, and shared shower houses. Full hookups are limited to private parks such as Stone Park Resort and Amphitheatre, which offers pull-through sites with 30 and 50-amp service, water, and sewer.
Cell service is generally adequate near Highway 67 and the town of Bonne Terre but drops off inside the deeper hollows at Washington State Park. Big-rig access is best at St Francois State Park, whose electric loop accommodates RVs up to about 60 feet; Washington State Park is tighter and better suited to rigs under 35 feet.
Ticks and chiggers are common from late spring through early fall. Raccoons work the campgrounds at night, so food should be stored inside the rig.
