Campgrounds near Gerald, Missouri
Gerald sits in Franklin County in east-central Missouri, roughly an hour southwest of St. Louis and just north of Interstate 44. The area places RV travelers within easy reach of the Meramec River valley, the wineries of the Hermann region, and the karst country that gives the Ozark foothills their caves and springs.
Campground options nearby range from full-service resorts to state-park loops. Lost Valley Lake Resort operates on hundreds of acres near Owensville with two lakes and full hookups. Meramec Campground, a family-run park in Sullivan, offers 30- and 50-amp sites, while Meramec Valley Campground and RV Park provides lake access in a rural setting. Meramec Caverns Natural Campground and RV Self Park round out the list with river and roadside access near Stanton.
Most trips here pair one basecamp with day drives to the Meramec River, Meramec State Park, and the region's caves and vineyards.
Things to do near Gerald
The Meramec River is the region's headline draw. Rafts, canoes, kayaks, and tubes are widely available for float trips, and the water is generally mellow, suitable for families and first-time paddlers. Fishing for smallmouth, largemouth, and catfish is productive through the warm months.
Meramec State Park protects roughly 6,900 acres of bluffs, forest, and riverfront, with more than 13 miles of hiking trails, a visitor center, and a park store. Naturalist-led tours of Fisher Cave, conducted with hand-held lights, are a signature activity and typically run from mid-May through mid-September. The privately operated Meramec Caverns near Stanton offers a longer, developed cave tour a short drive from most Gerald-area campgrounds.
Hermann wine country, Route 66 stops, and the town of Sullivan provide rainy-day and evening options within easy reach.

Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with May typically the peak precipitation month. River levels can run high after storms, and float outfitters may pause trips when the Meramec is above safe stage. Wildflowers, dogwood, and redbud make late April and early May a scenic window for hiking despite the mud.
Summer is the busiest camping season. Float trips, swimming holes, and cave tours fill up on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and RV sites at popular parks book out well ahead. Expect hot, humid afternoons with a real chance of thunderstorms.
Fall delivers the most stable weather: warm days, cool nights, easing humidity, and hardwood color from mid-October into early November. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but at Meramec State Park potable water at individual sites is turned off from November through April, leaving only a frost-free spigot near the dump station for water during that stretch.

How to book campgrounds near Gerald
Meramec State Park campsites are reserved through the Missouri State Parks system at icampmo.com or by phone at 877-422-6766. The window opens up to 12 months in advance, and reservations can be made online or by phone up until 7 p.m. Central the day of arrival. Same-day reservations are accepted, and any unreserved sites remain available by walk-up registration.
Private parks such as Lost Valley Lake Resort, Meramec Campground, Meramec Valley Campground and RV Park, Meramec Caverns Natural Campground, and RV Self Park take bookings directly by phone or through their websites. Lost Valley Lake is member-oriented but offers options for outside guests.
For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks ahead. Cancellation policies and rig-length limits vary by operator, so confirm hookup type before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the Meramec River valley are paved but winding, and the entrance road to Meramec State Park is narrow with a notable grade over the roughly three miles from the visitor center to the campground. Drivers of longer rigs should take the descent slowly.
Hookup levels vary widely. Meramec Campground and Lost Valley Lake Resort offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, while state-park loops mix basic, electric, and electric-water-sewer sites. Cell service is spotty in the river bottoms, and voice calls often work where data does not, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
Expect insects in summer, especially near the river, and pack layers for cool evenings even in July. Firewood should be sourced locally to comply with Missouri firewood advisories.
