Camping near Gray Summit, Missouri
Gray Summit sits along Interstate 44 in Franklin County, roughly 45 minutes west of downtown St. Louis. The town is best known as the home of Shaw Nature Reserve, a 2,400-acre private non-profit nature reserve operated as an extension of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and it functions as a convenient RV base for families visiting Six Flags, Purina Farms, and the wineries along the Missouri River bluffs.
RV options cluster along the I-44 corridor between Gray Summit and Eureka. Pin Oak RV Resort sits closest to town, while St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Six Flags, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp Resort put families within a short drive of the theme park. Beyond the Trail RV Park offers a quieter alternative for travelers who prefer a slower pace.
Public-land camping is available a short drive away at Robertsville State Park and Meramec State Park, both bordering the Meramec River, which flows just south of Gray Summit.
Things to do near Gray Summit
Shaw Nature Reserve is the anchor attraction. Over 17 miles of hiking trails run through the reserve, along with four miles of road, and the longest trail is the Rus Goddard River Trail, a 2.5-mile loop that descends to a gravel bar in the Meramec River. Habitats include a large tallgrass prairie, glades, woodlands, wetlands, and the Whitmire Wildflower Garden with over 500 native plant species, plus a children's Nature Explore Classroom.
Families with kids typically pair a day at Shaw with Purina Farms, located on more than 300 acres of rolling hills right outside of St. Louis, featuring first-hand encounters with farm animals, educational exhibits, wagon rides, and a hayloft play area. Six Flags St. Louis and its Hurricane Harbor water park sit about ten minutes east on I-44. The Meramec River supports paddling and fishing, and the Missouri wine country around Augusta and Hermann is within an easy drive.

The Gray Summit area follows a humid continental pattern with four distinct seasons. Spring brings wildflowers and the best trail conditions at Shaw Nature Reserve, but it is also the wettest and most storm-prone stretch of the year. The St. Louis metro sits east of the traditional heart of Tornado Alley and remains one of the metropolitan areas most affected by tornadoes, which are more likely in spring but can also occur in autumn.
Summer is peak season for RV travel. Days are hot and humid, Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor run full schedules, and campgrounds fill fastest between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Purina Farms operates seasonally from mid-April through the end of October, so most summer and shoulder-season trips still cover the family attractions.
Fall delivers cooler air and strong foliage color along the Meramec River bluffs. Winter is the quiet season: temperatures often drop below freezing and light snow is common, several private parks close or reduce services, and many state park loops remain open but with limited amenities.

We had a great time renting this camper! Ray was awesome to work with. He went over everything with us when we picked it up and was always quick to respond if we had any questions. The camper was really clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. It was great to get away with the family annd enjoy some time together without having to worry about anything. We had an awesome weekend, made some great memories, and will definitely be renting from Ray again! Do yourself a favor and take your family camping for a few days too. How to book a campsite
Private parks near Gray Summit, including Pin Oak RV Resort, St. Louis West / Historic Route 66 KOA Holiday, both Yogi Bear Jellystone properties, and Beyond the Trail RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends around Six Flags events sell out first, so book several weeks ahead for July and August stays.
Missouri State Parks use a single reservation system. Reservations can be made online at icampmo.com or by phone at 877-422-6766 up until 7 p.m. Central the day before arrival, and campers can now reserve a Missouri State Parks campsite up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. Nearby Robertsville and Meramec state parks are both fully reservable through that system, with walk-up registration allowed only when sites are unclaimed.
What to expect on the ground
Gray Summit itself is a small unincorporated community. Fuel, groceries, and quick-service restaurants are available at the I-44 exits in town and in nearby Villa Ridge, Pacific, and Eureka. Interstate access is straightforward for larger rigs, and most private parks in the area offer full hookups, dump stations, and pull-through sites.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-44 but can drop off in the river valleys and inside Shaw Nature Reserve. Shaw Nature Reserve is open daily with regular hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and extended evening hours in spring, summer, and fall; last entry is 30 minutes before closing, and an admission fee applies at the visitor center. Expect crowds on Six Flags event weekends, and plan for humidity, biting insects, and afternoon thunderstorms in summer. The Meramec River is prone to flooding, so verify site status after heavy spring rain.
