Campgrounds near Hillsdale, Missouri
Hillsdale is a village in St. Louis County, Missouri, sitting inside the greater St. Louis metropolitan area just west of the city limits. The nearest large city is St. Louis, roughly 4.5 miles away, which puts renters within easy reach of the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis Zoo, Forest Park, and Busch Stadium. There are no campgrounds inside the small village itself, so most RV travelers base out of parks in the wider metro area on both the Missouri and Illinois sides of the Mississippi River.
Close-in options include DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park and Cahokia RV Parque, both across the river in the East St. Louis area, plus the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey to the north. Safari RV Park and Sundermeier RV Park sit on the Missouri side, with Sundermeier located in historic St. Charles about 20 miles west of St. Louis, near the Gateway Arch, museums, and the St. Louis Zoo.
Most of these parks are full-hookup, paved-pad properties aimed at travelers using St. Louis as a base rather than backcountry destinations, which makes them practical for family renters who need shore power, laundry, and easy interstate access.
Things to do near Hillsdale
Trip planning from a Hillsdale-area base usually centers on downtown St. Louis attractions: Gateway Arch National Park, the free-admission St. Louis Zoo in Forest Park, the Missouri Botanical Garden, the City Museum, and the Saint Louis Science Center. Sports families can catch Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium or Blues hockey at Enterprise Center.
Across the river, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico. Historic St. Charles adds walkable brick streets and the Missouri River waterfront. The Katy Trail State Park runs adjacent to St. Charles for hiking and biking, giving RV renters an easy day-use trail without repositioning the rig.
Day trips within about two hours reach Meramec State Park caves, Mark Twain National Forest, and the wineries of the Missouri Rhineland along Highway 94.

In St. Louis, the summers are hot and muggy, the winters are very cold and snowy, and it is partly cloudy year round. Peak RV season runs from late April through October, with the shoulder months of May, September, and early October offering the most comfortable conditions for hookup camping and city sightseeing.
Summer, from June to August, is hot and quite sunny, although thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon. Hot and muggy periods, sometimes of long duration, can also occur in early September, and the temperature typically reaches 37 to 38 degrees Celsius on the hottest days of the year. Renters should plan for air-conditioning use and heavy generator or shore-power load.
St. Louis is located east of the heart of Tornado Alley and is one of the metropolitan areas most affected by this phenomenon, with tornadoes more likely in spring and sometimes in autumn. Renters traveling March through May should check NOAA severe-weather alerts each morning. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect freezing nights and possible snow that can affect water hookups.

We had a great time renting this camper! Ray was awesome to work with. He went over everything with us when we picked it up and was always quick to respond if we had any questions. The camper was really clean and had everything we needed for the weekend. It was great to get away with the family annd enjoy some time together without having to worry about anything. We had an awesome weekend, made some great memories, and will definitely be renting from Ray again! Do yourself a favor and take your family camping for a few days too. Unplug, enjoy the time together, and make some memories. You won’t regret it!

How to book
The campgrounds near Hillsdale are privately operated, so reservations go through each park's own website or phone line rather than a state or federal booking system. At Sundermeier RV Park, payment is typically required at the time of booking, and online payments are handled by credit card. KOA Journey properties, including the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, are booked through the KOA.com reservation portal or the KOA app.
For holiday weekends, Cardinals home stands, and major convention weekends downtown, book six to eight weeks ahead. Weeknight and off-season availability is usually easier, but calling the park directly can secure specific pull-through sites and accessible pads that online tools sometimes hide.
When renting an RV, confirm length, slide count, and hookup amperage with the park before booking to match your rig to an available site.
What to expect on site
Expect metro-area RV parks rather than woodland campgrounds. Sites are generally paved or graveled, close together, and geared to overnighters and multi-night city-tour stays. Sundermeier offers 106 level concrete pads, 39 pull-throughs, wide paved streets, ADA-compliant air-conditioned restrooms and laundry, true 30/50 amp electric service, cable TV, free Wi-Fi, picnic tables at each site, onsite propane, and a general store, which is representative of the higher-end parks in the area.
Road and rail noise is common because most parks sit near interstates or Mississippi River rail corridors. Some campers have mentioned that Sundermeier can get a bit noisy due to nearby highways and train tracks. Casino-linked parks, like the DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park, add shuttle access to gaming floors but tend to run brighter and busier at night.
Cell service and streaming Wi-Fi are reliable throughout the metro. Pets are generally welcome on leash; verify breed and count rules per park.
