Campgrounds and RV parks near Leawood, MO

Water recreation drives most trips in this corner of Missouri. Grand Falls, on Shoal Creek just south of Joplin, is the largest continuously flowing natural waterfall in the state. Campers based along Shoal Creek can fish, wade, and float on warm days, and several nearby operators offer creek access directly from their sites. Trout anglers make the drive to Roaring River State Park, one of Missouri's trout parks, where the stream is stocked from a working hatchery and open for catch-and-keep fishing March through October. The park also has seven hiking trails and a seasonal nature center. Route 66 attractions in Joplin, the historic square in Carthage, and Grand Lake o' the Cherokees across the Oklahoma line are all within an easy day-trip radius. On-site amenities matter for families, and Joplin KOA Journey adds a pool, playground, and fishing pond as a practical base for kids.

The Joplin area has a humid subtropical climate. Summer highs typically reach the upper 80s to low 90s with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder camping conditions with frequent thunderstorms. Spring storms can be severe: southwest Missouri sits on the western edge of Tornado Alley, and April and May are the most active months for severe weather. Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks are fully staffed and pools are open. At Joplin KOA Journey, the pool typically operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and popular sites fill early on holiday weekends. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable colour through October in the Ozark hills. Winter is quieter but usable. Some private parks scale back services in the off-season, and at Roaring River State Park the main camping season runs March through October, with only one of the three campground loops staying open through the winter.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, mature hardwood cover, and creek-fed valleys. Most private parks near Joplin offer full hookups with 30/50-amp service and can accommodate larger rigs, with big-rig friendly pull-thru sites common at the KOA and Rivers Bend. Cell service is generally reliable near Interstate 44 and thins out in the deeper Ozark hollows toward Roaring River. Summer humidity is heavy, biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, and afternoon thunderstorms can move through quickly. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV service are all readily available in Joplin and Carthage, which is useful for travellers arriving late or passing through on I-44.
