Campgrounds and RV parks near Northwoods, MO

The main draw for RV travelers is Gateway Arch National Park, a National Park Service site on the Mississippi riverfront that includes the 630-foot Arch, the Old Courthouse, and a museum on westward expansion. Tram rides to the top of the Arch and riverboat cruises anchor the visit for most families. Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the country at roughly 1,300 acres, holds the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the Missouri History Museum, all free to enter. West of the metro, Rockwoods Reservation offers forest trails managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Across the river, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico, a straightforward day trip from any of the nearby RV parks.

St. Louis has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot, humid summers. The warmest month is July, with average highs near 32°C (89°F) and nighttime lows around 22°C (71°F), while January averages a high near 4°C (39°F) with lows below freezing. Humidity peaks in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from late spring through summer. Spring is the wettest stretch, with May typically bringing the most rainy days of any month. Summer sees frequent thunderstorm activity but slightly less total precipitation than spring, and heat advisories are common in July. Mid-April through mid-May and mid-September through mid-October are generally considered the most pleasant windows for RV travel, with autumn being drier and less prone to sudden temperature swings. Winter brings occasional snow from roughly November through March, with an annual average around 17 inches. Some private RV parks in the metro operate year-round, but expect reduced services and possible closures at seasonal state park campgrounds farther out.

Most RV parks near Northwoods are urban or suburban properties oriented toward interstate access and city sightseeing rather than wilderness camping. Expect paved or gravel pull-through and back-in sites, full hookups at most locations, and proximity to highway noise at parks nearest I-70, I-270, and I-64. Cell service and Wi-Fi are generally reliable across the metro. Groceries, propane, dump stations, and RV service centers are all within a short drive. Traffic into downtown St. Louis is heaviest on weekday mornings and late afternoons, so plan Arch or Forest Park visits around midday when possible. Summer heat and humidity can be intense, so sites with shade or 50-amp service for air conditioning are worth prioritizing. Thunderstorms move through quickly, and tornado watches occasionally occur in spring.
