Campgrounds and RV parks near Owensville, MO

The Meramec River is the main draw. Floating, tubing, canoeing, and smallmouth bass fishing are all popular, with outfitters running shuttles on the stretches south of town. Nearby Meramec State Park adds more than 13 miles of hiking trails, tours of Fisher Cave, and swimming and boating access along the river. Inside private resorts, families often stick close to base. Lost Valley Lake Resort has indoor and outdoor pools, two stocked lakes, horseback riding, and a large recreation building with a gym, indoor courts, and a theater. Lucky Clover Lakeside River Resort offers waterfront sites for direct swim and paddle access. Off the water, day trips run to Hermann's wineries, Onondaga Cave State Park, and the shops in downtown Washington, Missouri.

Spring runs cool and wet. March through May is the wettest stretch of the year, with May typically the peak rainfall month at close to four inches. River levels rise quickly after heavy storms, and float trip operators sometimes pause bookings when the Meramec runs high. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April. Summer is the busiest camping season. June through August brings hot, humid days with highs near the upper 80s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day fill early at both private resorts and Missouri State Park campgrounds, so booking well ahead is essential. Fall is the sweet spot for RV travelers who want cooler nights and lighter crowds. September and October bring drier weather, comfortable daytime temperatures, and color along the river bluffs. Winter is cold, with occasional snow and freezing nights. Water to individual sites at Meramec State Park is typically shut off at the end of October, and some private parks reduce services, though Lost Valley Lake Resort stays open year-round.

Roads into most Owensville-area campgrounds are paved highways followed by short county or resort roads. Big rigs are generally accommodated at Lost Valley Lake Resort, which lists sites for RVs up to 80 feet with 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer. Confirm site length at smaller parks like RV Self Park and Adventure Outdoors Fagan's before arrival. Cell service is spotty in the river valleys and hollows south of town. Download maps offline before leaving the interstate. Grocery runs are easiest in Owensville itself or in Rolla and Sullivan along I-44. Expect ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes from late spring through early fall. Bring insect repellent, and check for ticks after hikes and river days. Firewood should be sourced locally to limit pest spread.
