Campgrounds near St. James, Missouri
St. James sits in the Missouri Ozarks along Interstate 44 in Phelps County, about 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. The town is a practical base for RV travel because it combines easy interstate access with quick drives to spring-fed rivers, caves, and state parks. Nearby options include Pheasant Acres RV Park, Ozark Farms Family Campground and RV Park, Adventure Outdoors Fagan's, Indian Springs Resort and Campground, and Candy Cane RV Park and Campground.
The area's headline attraction is Maramec Spring Park, which contains the fifth largest spring in the state and produces an average of 100 million gallons of water daily. The park covers 1,860 acres of forest and fields, with a 200-acre public use area offering a cafe, store, camping, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and fishing.
A short drive north puts RVers at Meramec State Park, located southwest of St. Louis just off Interstate 44 and encompassing roughly 6,900 acres, giving families two large parks and several private campgrounds within an easy day's radius of town.
Things to do around St. James
Trout fishing anchors most trips. The Meramec River and nearby springs provide excellent fishing, and at Maramec Spring Park trout fishing is the signature draw. A Missouri fishing permit and a daily trout tag are required, available at The Company Store in the park.
For hiking and paddling, Meramec State Park offers more than 13 miles of hiking trails, and visitors can swim, fish, raft, and boat in the river as it flows past majestic bluffs, wooded areas, and a dramatic cave entrance. Fisher Cave tours with hand-held lights are a standout activity. Families can also float the upper Meramec by canoe, kayak, or raft from local outfitters.
St. James itself sits along a stretch of Missouri wine country with tasting rooms in town, and Rolla, about ten minutes west on I-44, offers grocery runs, fuel, and cell coverage when campgrounds have weak signal.

The main camping window runs spring through late fall. At Maramec Spring Park the camping season runs from late February through the end of October, which mirrors the pattern at most privately operated riverside parks in the area. Meramec State Park is the exception: sections of the campground operate year-round, though private water hookups, group showers, and certain restroom facilities run only April 1 through October 31.
Spring is the wettest stretch and flooding is a real planning factor. Several campgrounds sit in flood-prone locations along the Meramec River, and the Maramec Spring campground is subject to flash flooding, with guests required to evacuate if a horn sounds from a park vehicle. Travelers should check river forecasts before booking riverside sites in spring and early summer.
Summer weekends and fall color weekends fill quickly. Missouri State Parks campsite reservations open 12 months in advance, so book early for holidays and peak weekends.
How to book campgrounds near St. James
For sites at Meramec State Park, use the Missouri State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made through the online reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766), and can be booked up to 12 months in advance. Meramec State Park offers basic, electric, electric/water, and sewer/electric/water sites, plus group tent areas, so choose the hookup level that matches the rig.
Maramec Spring Park is booked separately. It is privately owned and operated by the James Foundation, so its policies and reservation channel differ from state parks. Private options including Pheasant Acres RV Park, Ozark Farms Family Campground and RV Park, Adventure Outdoors Fagan's, Indian Springs Resort and Campground, and Candy Cane RV Park and Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines.
What to expect on the ground
Most campgrounds in the area are wooded and shaded. Sites sit beneath a canopy of mature trees, offering a mix of comfort and rustic character, and at Maramec Spring Park RV loops include pull-through and back-in sites with 50- and 30-amp electric hookups. Full hookups are less common outside private RV parks, so plan to use dump stations between stays.
Cell service is a common surprise. Coverage is inconsistent through the region and can be very weak at some campgrounds, so plan to use campground WiFi where available or drive into St. James or Rolla for reliable communication.
Expect wildlife near sites and follow standard food-storage practices. Riverside sites can be gravel or grass and may be uneven, so bring leveling blocks.
