Camping near Union, Missouri
Union sits in Franklin County along the Bourbeuse River, roughly an hour southwest of St. Louis and within easy reach of the Meramec River corridor. The area functions as a practical base for RV travellers heading to the Ozark foothills, with Interstate 44 providing a direct route south to cave country and state park land.
Private RV parks cluster near I-44 exits and along the river. Meramec State Park lies in Franklin County approximately 60 miles southwest of St. Louis near Interstate 44 and the city of Sullivan, with the Meramec River flowing through steep forested hills of pine and hardwoods with limestone outcroppings. Pin Oak RV Resort and Beyond the Trail RV Park serve travellers looking for full-hookup convenience closer to town.
For cave-country stays, Meramec Campground and Meramec Caverns Natural Campground place RVers within walking distance of tour operations and river access. Forty Acre Club Nudist Resort operates as a members-oriented clothing-optional property and is not a general-audience campground.
Things to do around Union
River recreation drives the trip. Floating the Meramec by canoe, kayak, or raft is a common outing, with a typical five-mile float taking two to four hours on a Class I river suitable for most experience levels. The Meramec River flows past bluffs, wooded areas, and a dramatic cave entrance, and more than 13 miles of hiking trails let visitors swim, fish, raft, and boat within Meramec State Park.
Cave tours are the other headline activity. A guided tour of Fisher Cave with hand-held lights is a standard park visit, and the park also offers fishing, swimming at a designated beach, and canoe or raft rentals with shuttle service through the River Stop Store. Meramec Caverns near Stanton runs its own guided tours daily in season.
Downtown Union offers grocery restocks, laundromats, and fuel before heading deeper into the Ozarks.

Late spring through early fall is the working RV season. May and June bring the highest river levels for floating, though thunderstorms are frequent and can push the Meramec into flood stage, so check gauges before arriving. July and August are hot and humid, with peak demand for state park sites and cabins. Weekends fill early, and midweek arrivals see better availability.
September and October are the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures drop into a comfortable range, humidity fades, and hardwood color peaks in mid to late October across the Ozark hills. Cave tours continue and campgrounds are noticeably quieter after Labor Day.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Shower facilities at Meramec State Park operate seasonally from April through October. During the off-season from November through March, potable water at many Missouri state parks is available only from frost-free spigots at the dump station, and many private parks reduce services or close entirely during the coldest months.

How to book campgrounds near Union
State park sites use a single centralized system. Meramec State Park offers basic, electric, electric/water, and sewer/electric/water campsites, as well as group tent areas. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window, either online through the Missouri State Parks reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766).
Reservable sites may be available on a walk-up basis if not booked, and camping is limited to 15 nights within any 30-consecutive-day period. Weekend stays at some Missouri state parks require a two-night minimum on Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday.
Private parks including Pin Oak RV Resort, Beyond the Trail RV Park, Meramec Campground, and Meramec Caverns Natural Campground take bookings directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer holiday weekends should be booked several months out.
What to expect on-site
Sites near the river tend to be shaded and sloped, with gravel or paved pads. Hookup levels vary widely. Meramec State Park features reservable basic, electric, electric/water, and sewer/electric/water campsites, plus group-camping areas. Private parks along I-44 more consistently offer 30/50-amp service and sewer connections.
Meramec State Park campers have access to a sanitary dump station, coin-operated laundry, and the Fireside Store and Grill for supplies and dining. Cell coverage in the river valleys can be patchy; expect stronger signal closer to Union and Sullivan than deep inside the parks.
Missouri state parks limit pets to leashes and require close supervision at campsites. Firewood carry-in rules apply due to invasive-pest advisories, so buy local when possible.

There's no special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for personal-use RVs in the state. To book on RVezy you'll need to be an approved driver (generally 25 or older), and we'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout, so there's nothing to print or bring in person. Winters are mild but variable, with daytime highs around 40 to 50 degrees. Pro tip: book the first two weekends in October for peak fall foliage along Highway 100.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Union, MO?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Union is genuinely doable, and most renters are road-ready in under an hour. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, the propane system, water tanks, the generator, and dumping. Union's location is ideal for beginners: wide rural highways like Route 50 and Route 100, gentle terrain, and easy access to flat campgrounds without mountain switchbacks. Start with a travel trailer or Class C if you're nervous; they drive more like a large van than a bus. Pro tip: do a short shakedown trip to Robertsville State Park (just 15 minutes from Union) the first night so you can practice systems close to home before heading further out.
modot.org/driver-informationWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Union, MO trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so one phone call gets help dispatched whether you're parked at Meramec State Park or rolling down I-44 toward Rolla. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, tows, and mechanical issues. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app and usually knows the rig inside out, which often solves smaller issues fast. Pro tip: before pulling away at pickup, save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone's favorites; cell coverage in the Mark Twain National Forest south of Union can be spotty.
