Campgrounds near Vandalia, Missouri
Vandalia sits in Audrain County in northeast Missouri, roughly midway between Columbia and Hannibal along U.S. Highway 54. The town serves as a practical staging point for RV travelers heading to Mark Twain Lake, the 18,000-acre reservoir formed by damming the Salt River, which lies a short drive to the northeast.
Camping options within reasonable driving distance range from private RV parks with full hookups to federally managed lakeside campgrounds operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mark Twain Lake offers a variety of camping opportunities, from primitive hike-in sites to developed sites with electric hookups and, at a limited number of sites, full hookups. Closer to town, Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground and Woodyz Acres RV Park and Campground cater to travelers who want quick highway access, while Mark Twain Lake Jellystone Park, HillBillys Campground and General Store, and Cozy C RV Campground LLC round out the private options in the surrounding countryside.
The terrain is gently rolling farmland and hardwood forest, with the Salt River watershed feeding the lake to the north. Most sites accommodate standard travel trailers and Class C rigs without difficulty.
Things to do near Vandalia
Mark Twain Lake has a strong reputation as a crappie and bass fishery, drawing anglers throughout the warm months. Boat ramps ring the reservoir, and swim beaches operate at several Corps of Engineers day-use areas, including Indian Creek. Hiking is available on lakeside trails near the developed recreation areas.
Hannibal, the boyhood home of Mark Twain, lies roughly a half hour to the northeast and offers riverfront walking, the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, and Mississippi River sightseeing cruises. Closer to the lake itself, the Clarence Cannon Dam and the M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center provide overlooks, exhibits, and picnic areas that work well for a mellow half-day outing.
Golf courses, small-town diners, and shooting sports at the range below the dam round out the local options.

The Mark Twain Lake camping season generally runs from spring through fall. Corps of Engineers loops open in phases: the primary loops at Ray Behrens and Indian Creek typically open in late March or early April and stay open into mid-November, while outer loops such as Cedar Ridge and Eagle Point open in early May and close by late September. Exact opening and closing dates shift each year and are announced by the Mark Twain Lake Project Office.
Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with July weekends often booking out well in advance. Shoulder periods in April, May, and September offer cooler weather, fewer bugs, and better site availability. Private parks near Vandalia generally operate on a longer season, and some remain open year-round for self-contained rigs.
Winter camping is limited. Most federal loops are closed, water systems are shut off to prevent freezing, and only a handful of private sites stay accessible.
How to book campgrounds near Vandalia
Federal campgrounds around Mark Twain Lake use a single centralized system. All sites are reservable, a reservation is required prior to setting up on a site, and reservations are made at recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Gate attendants do not take reservations on-site.
The booking window opens six months in advance on a rolling daily basis, with new dates released at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Holiday weekends and prime lakeside sites often fill the moment they release.
Private campgrounds, including Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground, Mark Twain Lake Jellystone Park, HillBillys Campground and General Store, Woodyz Acres RV Park and Campground, and Cozy C RV Campground LLC, each handle their own bookings by phone or through their own websites. Calling ahead is recommended for summer weekends and any dates tied to local events.
What to expect camping near Vandalia
Expect a rural, low-key camping experience. Cell coverage is generally reliable along U.S. 54 and near the towns of Perry and Monroe City, but can drop in wooded lake coves. Ray Behrens has three loops, Deer Run, Little Bluestem, and Cedar Ridge, with electric hookups and accessible flush toilets and shower facilities, plus a central dump station and a limited number of full-hookup sites.
Summer humidity is real, and mosquitoes appear after dusk near the water. Bring bug spray, a screen room if possible, and plenty of drinking water. Thunderstorms can move through quickly in late spring and summer, so check each campground's storm shelter location on arrival.
Private parks near Vandalia tend to be smaller and family-run, with amenities such as laundry, camp stores, and pull-through sites. Quiet hours are enforced at most locations, and generator use is typically restricted in the federal campgrounds.
