Campgrounds and RV parks near Wellston, MO

The Gateway Arch and its riverfront park are the anchor attraction, with tram rides to the top and museum exhibits on westward expansion. Forest Park holds the free Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center, and Missouri History Museum, all reachable from one parking area and family-friendly for a full day. Across the river in Illinois, Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the largest pre-Columbian earthworks north of Mexico and pairs well with a stay at Cahokia RV Parque or DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park. Day trips west lead to Route 66 stops, the Missouri wine country around Augusta and Hermann, and float trips on the Meramec and Huzzah rivers. Cyclists can pick up the Katy Trail, a rails-to-trails route that runs across most of Missouri.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Wellston. March through May brings mild days and green landscapes but is also the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and the region's peak severe-weather season. St. Louis sits east of the heart of Tornado Alley and ranks among the metropolitan areas most affected, so travelers should have a weather radio and a shelter plan for spring stays. Summer runs hot and humid, with July highs typically in the upper 80s Fahrenheit and dew points that make shaded, full-hookup sites with strong 50-amp service a priority for air conditioning. Weekend bookings around July 4 and Labor Day fill early at the closest parks. September and October bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and generally reliable weather for sightseeing. Winters are cold but the driest season; the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey closes from November through March, while year-round metro parks like Sundermeier RV Park stay open for off-season travelers.

Expect an urban, interstate-adjacent camping experience at the closest options. Sites at DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park and Cahokia RV Parque sit on the Illinois floodplain across from the Arch, with skyline views but limited shade and some road and rail noise. Safari RV Park and Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles offer a quieter suburban feel with tree cover and easy access to the historic St. Charles riverfront. Most metro parks are level, gravel or paved, and rig-friendly for larger Class A and fifth-wheel rentals, but check length limits and low-clearance routes into the Illinois river parks. Cell coverage is strong throughout the metro. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring into early fall, especially near the rivers, so pack repellent.
