Camping near Wellsville, Missouri
Wellsville sits in Montgomery County in east-central Missouri, roughly halfway between St. Louis and Columbia and a short drive north of Interstate 70. The area draws RV travelers heading to the Loutre River valley, the rolling farmland of the Cuivre River basin, and the archaeological and hiking draws of nearby state parkland.
The closest full-service public campground is Graham Cave State Park, a 386-acre unit in Montgomery County with a mix of basic and electric sites along wooded ridges above the Loutre River. Private options in the surrounding countryside include Hickory Ridge Campground LLC, Lazy Day Campground, Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground, and Red Maples Community, which give renters alternatives when the state park is full or when longer stays are needed.
Most sites in the region suit small to mid-size rigs. Renters bringing larger motorhomes should confirm pad length and hookup type at booking, since some public sites are basic only and pads can be unlevel.
Things to do around Wellsville
The headline attraction is Graham Cave itself, a wide sandstone shelter reached by a short interpretive trail. The cave protects a Pre-Columbian archaeological site dating back as far as 10,000 years, and in 1961 Graham Cave became the first archaeological site in the United States to be designated a National Historic Landmark.
Beyond the cave, several hiking trails wind through a mix of moist bottomland forest, rocky oak-hickory forest, and the Graham Cave Glades Natural Area. Fern Ridge Trail is an accessible walking path that loops around the interpretive shelter and picnic area, and a boat ramp on the Loutre River provides access for paddling and fishing.
Off-park time is best spent on day trips to Columbia, the Missouri River wine country south of I-70, and small-town diners in Montgomery City and Wellsville.

The camping shoulder starts in early spring. Trails at Graham Cave can be muddy after storms, wet-weather runs sometimes appear along the drainages, and wildflowers bloom through April and May. Severe-weather season peaks from April into June in central Missouri, so renters should watch forecasts for thunderstorms and tornado warnings.
Summer is the busiest stretch, with hot and humid weather and heavier bookings on holiday weekends. Reserve early for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day windows, and expect biting insects near the river bottoms. Fall brings oak-hickory color, cooler nights, and lighter crowds, making it the most comfortable window for RV travel through central Missouri.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Reservations at Graham Cave are offered April 1 through October 31, water and showers are available through the on-season, and during the off-season campers must bring their own potable water. Private parks around Wellsville set their own winter hours, so call ahead.
How to book a site
Graham Cave State Park bookings go through the Missouri State Parks reservation system. Campers can reserve a Missouri State Parks campsite up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. Reservations can be made online or by calling 877-422-6766.
The Graham Cave Campground has 34 basic campsites and 18 sites with electric that are available all year, pads range from 33 to 62 feet, and reservations are only available from April through October. During the off-season from November through March, all sites are first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Hickory Ridge Campground LLC, Lazy Day Campground, Back Forty Bluegrass Park and Campground, and Red Maples Community, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length, hookup amperage, and any event weekends when booking.
What to expect
Expect a rural, quiet setting with tree cover and rolling terrain. At Graham Cave, RV parking pads are paved with 30-amp service, sites do not have water hookups, and some spots are not level, so bring leveling blocks and fill fresh water before arrival. Site 34 at Graham Cave Campground is the campground's only pull-thru site, which matters for larger rigs.
Though the interstate is nearby, Graham Cave State Park is not an overly busy camping locale, and reservations open 12 months in advance, though this park often has walk-up availability. Cell coverage is generally usable but spotty in wooded hollows.
Groceries, fuel, and propane are easiest to top off in Montgomery City or Wellsville before turning onto park roads.
